Thinking of getting out of the "hobby"

So I've had a rough time with my bike over the years I've owned it. The first few years I had stator issues a plenty, then about two years ago The turbo failed early in the year so I replaced it with a somewhat rebuilt subaru unit. It lasted 800 miles, the most I've ever ridded my bike in one go.
Today AMAZINGLY, I actually found a turbo on craigslist. Listed as a "very tiny turbo" and it's a factory 500t unit. The question is, do I give up and sell the thing once it runs again? I do want to ride as it does "save" me lots of money on gas. On the other hand the getting is good. I forgot to renew the plates last year and I just let the insurance lapse last week as I figured the turbo replacement would be a longer road.
The downside is I'll never own one again, and when it runs, it is just an awesome bike. I haven't ridden it all that much though, maybe... MAYBE 2k miles in the last 4 years between break downs. But this maybe the "last" thing wrong with it. It ran great all last year until the turbo lost the oil seal. If I could see the future where the bike runs great for a few years without issues, I might keep it. If I knew it were going to break before the end of the summer I'd totally ditch it. I'm just tired of working on the damn thing.
What do you guys think?

I think you need to sell it and buy one from somebody who has actually taken care of it.
Since I did the triple bypass on Racer, I have put about 5,000 trouble free miles on it. Well, I did just have to regrease the pro-link, but aside from that, no issues.

If you are not hard up for the money, keep it. You will miss it once it is gone.
They are not making them anymore, so it costs more to get back in once you're out.

These bikes are usually fairly reliable other than the stator...
Once the issues are dealt with, I believe you will be satisfied with the return....

Where are you located? Maybe someone nearby could give you a hand going over everything.

Weeeelll, I think I've calmed a little kinda... or just given into the fact that I'm gonna own this thing forever.
To answer some questions, I actually am a qualified mechanic in real life so I have no "problems" working on the bike, I'm just a little miffed that I work on the bike more then I ride the thing.. but I do really love the bike.
I did kinda get hosed by the previous owner for sure. When I bought it there were sure signs of bad stator the third day I owned it... I probably could have caught it on the test ride, but I was busy not falling off.
On to business though. I have no compression in cylinder #1... the left side. Pulled the valve cover, and the piston moves and so do the valves. They have very little clearance when closed. Both cylinders oil foul the plugs right away, and the bike almost starts.
Kinda leaning towards a hole in the piston as it makes the most sense. I need to snag the borescope from work to confirm, and it actually takes pics, neat little thing. Anyway, I'd welcome any thoughts on this.
Also, what parts interchange with the N/A or other bikes lower end wise. I know the crank and rods are fancy for this bike, but what of the pistons? Also, can this be done without pulling the block?
Thanks guys!

Bob, You can take the heads off to check your piston tops - they are flat-top pistons, so nothing like the n/a pistons - but all work on bearings, rods, pistons, gearbox, stator, camchain, camshaft is really a motor-out.
As the motor turns over through two full rotations of the crankshaft, check that ALL valves DO move.
One bike I bought had NIL exhaust valve movement, and that was a half-withdrawn sub-rocker shaft allowing the exhaust sub-rocker to fall off the end of the shaft.
Removing the head should let you see if the valve seats are burnt, or a valve head has bent.

I decided to go get the scope... The piston top is cracked all over... looks like a bomb went off inside. I'll get head off pics soon...
Scope pics are the first dozen or so.

Looks like it may have swallowed a valve.
1978 CX500 - I live on a one-way street that's also a dead end. I'm not sure how I got here, or how I'm going to get out. Four wheels move the body; Two wheels move the Soul.

So i'm in for the long haul. If I order a normal cx gasket kit will it work for the turbo? Headgaskets and all? I cannot see why it wouldn't.

NEVER EVER use the camshaft front bearing holder gasket from a standard CX gasket kit - it looks like it will do the job, BUT it doesn't.
The head gaskets for a standard CX500 are ALMOST the same - except for one extra coolant flow hole right at the exhaust gasses exit port in the head.

Ok...
I have the topping gasket for the front camshaft front bearing (I think) and can I modify the head gasket to make it work? The reason I ask is because I spied a complete rebuild kit on Ebay, but I don't want to buy it if I cannot use major bits like the HGs. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360250183865&viewitem=#ht_552wt_971
THIS here is what I was eying... Where is the best place to get this kind of thing?
Also, why won't my HTML work?!?!

I agree with Doward. Maybe find someone located in your area to give you a hand with the repair. Maybe let someone else take the bike for a week and just takes notes on the issues it may have.
Wrenching on these bikes are fun but there is a point when it needs to come to a stop. I've been there and done that. I am myself very close to the point you are at my my cx 500 custom. However within the past couple of days I was lucky enough to meet a new friend who knows way more about bikes than I ever will. He shared with me the problems and even given me a hand. A big thanks to my friend.
