Interest in a mechanical seal for ~$15 USD?
|
|
|
|
|
I've got a seal on the way that I believe will turn out to be a direct replacement for the Honda OEM mechanical seal.
Cost would be about $15/ea (minimum 10) - price might drop with a bigger order (say 30)
Anyway, first I need to verify this IS the correct seal.
If so, any interest? I'll order 10 up if I'm sure they'll sell.
*edit* Look, a list! LOL

*UPDATE* I'm going to go ahead and open this officially! (5/3/2010)
Paypal email address is -- info AT vcsystemsonline DOT com (replace AT and DOT with their respective symbols)
Cost is $14.20 / seal (as long as we get 25 pcs ordered - otherwise it'll be $15 even for 10-25 pcs)
Shipping is $2 for the first seal, $1 for each seal after.
If you live outside the US, I have no problem shipping to you - for
instance, 2 seals to Spain should only be $4-5, so to our fellow CXers
over the pond - feel free to get in on this!
Make sure you select 'gift' for the paypal transaction! I'm not making
anything out of this, so let's not leave me footing any fees, please LOL
I'll basically take payments until May 10th (one week from now) and then
place the order - you guys getting paid after the 10th, just make
certain you're committed - I can cover a couple of you
PLEASE MAKE CERTAIN IN YOUR PAYMENT YOU MENTION YOUR HANDLE ON HERE! OTHERWISE I DO NOT KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!

I'll take two.
Luniticmark is probably in for 1 as well. (I know he will likely be doing a preventive triple bypass in the next month or two.)

If you're going to do quantity, you can better that price.
$15 is around the price many boat and small equipment places sell it for. I got mine (+/- 2 years ago) from the local bicycle/lawn repair place for $16, it was listed for $27, but he matched the internet price (cost me sales tax but saved me much more in shipping.)
A quick google came up with this and a few others within a couple bucks:
http://www.lawnmowerpros.com/detail.asp?id=11H-12438-10-00
The main savings will be shipping/handling fees, I've never ordered one online, but I'm sure they get your $5 minimum for shipping. Volume buy may be worth it for that alone, as all you need to do is add a first class stamp to pass them along. I'm all up for getting some CX group buys going on here, from perusing the board I suspect we could get some really good deals on full gasket kits and timing chains etc. in moderate quantities. Something everyone is going to have to buy. FWIW, Fleabay cam chain is $75 and gasket kit (with all Orings etc.) is $65 with "free" shipping.
I'll commit to buy 2, let's get the ball rolling.

Keep in mind I have to get mine first and compare it to make certain it is the correct size.
The Yamaha one is cheaper (also the wrong size, isn't it?), but my goal is a complete Honda OEM - dimensioned one, and my local Honda stealership is quoting me almost $50 for one!

When you order the smaller one for the ur (original) CX's, the dealer will send you the larger (28mm Yamaha size) seal. The smaller seal was supercedded by the larger one decades ago by Honda, as many on here have posted in the past.
If you've got a line on the "Davies" seal with the same dimensions as the original CX seal, they'll be plenty of interest.
I'm down for 2 either way. IIRC, the urCX seal was 27mm and the only one available from Honda now is the 28mm, going from fuzzy memory here but those numbers sound right.

If they are 27mm, I only need one for the '82 "wing" (just like a '78 CX). Luniticmarks bike is a 650. they take the 28mm seal too.

So first, the bad news - it's a 28mm seal after all. So yes, Shep's method can still be used to handle replacement for those with the 27mm seal head (although the supplier IS looking to try to locate an actual 27mm seal)
Pictures:

On the strange side, my 1978 engine took the 28mm seal without any problem - which makes me wonder if at least the rear case hasn't been changed out (or flap-wheeled out?) previously.
Next I want to RUN the bike with the seal - but it appears my Ignitech is acting up (no spark, and no response when I try to read the Ignitech from my laptop any more!)

If this is the bike you are talking about then I'm not sure you have a 78 engine. What's the vin number on the engine.

Guess it's a 78. Lot of mix and match on that bike. Should have a silver starter and the engines on the 78's tend to look like crap from oxidizing.

As they are 28mm, I would go for 2 please.
I would be interested in the Cam Chain buy also, for three.
And a gasket kit buy, 1 or 2 500cc kits and two 650cc kits

Well, I fired the engine on one cylinder for about 3 minutes with no leaks at all!
I'd like to put the bike through the ringer before committing to this.
Looks like 10 seals will be the way to go?

I knew they'd be the 28's, the OEM UR-CX seal would be like finding hens teeth.
It's time to flap out the hole with the 502 Dremel flapwheel I've been staring at on my shelf for a year now.
I'm still in for 2.
Anyone still on the fence, actual shipping instead of "shipping and handling" is enough reason to get'm here.

The flapper wheel hole reaming thing, scare's me a bit.
I might stick with the yamaha seal and shep's method.
Unless someone can convince me the flapper wheel is easier.

Yep, you can easily swap the innards, just like the Yamaha seal method. I had my hopes on it being a 27mm seal, as that would be about the only source I'd know of for them, but it's not meant to be
I'll need to get a final count, and I'm going to see what I can do for shipping. I'd like to be able to ship them for dirt cheap (think 1st class mail) so that these can go out in the $17 range.
*edit*
Yep, a 4 oz 1st class package from Alachua, FL to Los Angeles, CA for $1.75. $2 for shipping sound fair to everyone?

I'll need to get a final count, and I'm going to see what I can do for shipping. I'd like to be able to ship them for dirt cheap (think 1st class mail) so that these can go out in the $17 range.
*edit*
Yep, a 4 oz 1st class package from Alachua, FL to Los Angeles, CA for $1.75. $2 for shipping sound fair to everyone?

Do you know the dimensions of the inner rubber seal.
Same as stock or a little bigger like the yamaha?

I would like to order 3 seals when you get it all lined out. One for each motor and one spare.

I don't know about that - I'd certainly hate to just sit on them and they not go anywhere.
I'm not doing this to make money - I'm just trying to help my fellow CX'ers out
I'm inquiring as to how much a set of 25 of the seals would run. I'm hoping we can knock a buck or two off!

I'll take 2. I bought one on cheapcycleparts.com for $19.92, but they have a minimum shipping charge of $7.99. You could make a few bucks on e-bay selling them, but you won't get rich ;-)
