The "Little Dragon" project
|
|
|
|
|
Hi,
I know on most forums its expected to introduce yourself in your first post so, here we are. I am currently working on a more modern looking cx500 for little sister. The original seat height was too high for her so a cafe conversion will help sort that. Pretty new to cx's but not new to motorcycles and working on them. Found this website while in search of technical info. I have enjoyed reading some of peoples posts and seeing what is happening. This is the build project as it sits now. I am going to change the rear shock to something more suitable it is just there for my proof of concept. Thanks for having me.

Welcome to the CX/GL500 forum. That's a cool CX custom build you've got going. Is your monoshock a standard CX? Hopefully your sister is pretty lightweight. What year is the donor CX500? FYI, the first year(s) have bigger wheels. If you want to lower the motorcycle an inch without doing any modifications, install CX500 wheels from 1980 or newer. They're smaller in diameter.

thats great info, yes I may still end up lowering it more. So the rim sizes are smaller, front on mine is 19 and rear is 18 the later yrs are what? Also the rear shock location will probably remain the same concept but the shock will be swapped out for something alot more stout, the single original shock couldn't even hold the bike up. I am trying to get this bike dropped 30 lbs of weight, and lower it center of gravity as much as possible. So the battery will mount as low as I can get it on the front of the bike, I will probably get a smaller battery for weight savings and to make it easier to find a place for. I hope you all don't hate me for chopping this thing. Everyone purists here?

Hey, another local!!! Welcome.
so, Nope, not all purists. Many mods have been done, but mostly to the cx versions like your.
The GL500 (aka silverwings) have a monoshock rear so they don't get cafe'd too much. Plus, the GL versions of the 500 can have hondaline fairing and luggage, etc
Anyway, I should have an extra smaller cx500 16" rear wheel. It'll swap, but it's a reverse comstar, so the apperance is different. I also have the matching comstar front.
email if your intersted.
Eitherway, we'll get a local ride befor too long.

I may take you up on the wheels, I really like the way these look, but if I need to drop it another inch or so I will definitely need them, you wouldn't mind holding on to them for a couple months for me? I would need both.
Also, I am always ready for a ride, my cb500 cafe is ready to roll.

Looks like a sweet bike. I agree we need to put together a local role call. I'd love to see your bike in person.

Man Oregon represents in the vintage bike scene. I also have a cb500 and am on another forum for that and I gotta tell you the custom vintage and stock vintage scene is huge around here. Makes me happy lots of people to have fun riding with. The cx should be done in no more then two months ( I work fast). Then there will be some shake down time which for you guys would be a good time to hit me to up if you prefer it being a "cx" riders meet and great. Otherwise if anyone wants to see it in process I am always up for meeting people and showing them my builds.

Cornandp, Maybe next weekend, I can drag the wheels over to ya and have you hold on to them till you decide either way.
Check out your ride then too. Good time to bump into a few others and plan a local ride somewhere in mid may?...

Seat build process, first I make the pan out of aluminum sheet on the english wheel. Ends up looking like this.

Then foam work shaping and it becomes like this.

Then the tail light glass in the cowl.

I also built a new grill for the radiator

More to come, my dies showed up so now I can build some racing headers out of stainless tube!

well after a bit of trial and error I have found a spot for the shock that gets be about an 1 1/2 in of sag. With me, and a bike without any fluids. So I am hoping that the fluids make up the difference in weight between my sister and I pretty close. Pre load is on the lowest setting so if you are lighter then 120 lbs soaking wet too bad for you . Also if you are heavier, and most of us are there is some wiggle room then. Thats all I have for today because this thing was distracting me.

Alright so I have trying to do some reading up on issues with these bikes, but the info is sporadic at best. I was wondering if people might sum it up for me. I just need simple info, like such an such a part is bad we replace it with etc... kind of things. I understand it probably has been beat to death, I am new to the cx but not to mechanicals so I was hoping to hear about typical failures related to ignition, and the stator. Thanks

change oil and filter every 2500 miles adjust cam chain and valves twice a year forget about your stator,it could go bad the first week its made or outlast you and me. renew coolant, and diff oil every year replace your main fuse with a blade fuse[if not done already] its all in the service manual...........they are pretty sturdy little machines, and will put up with a fair bit of abuse and a warm welcome from espana

nope the last pic is the rear cowl. I am trying to keep the weight of the bike as low as possible since it already seems top heavy. Battery will be lower too.

Its actually called a resonator. I think the auto guys call it that because it removes high frequency noise but lets the low frequency "resonate" out. The design is exactly the same as an aftermarket motorcycle exhaust manufacturer. Saves me time is ultra durable and fits the look under there. By the way seven in of clearance or so under there still.

no probably not. It will fry any squirrels that find their way under my front tire. Barbecue anyone?
I am guesstimating about 30 lbs weight reduction. On my cafe builds like to see 40 lbs, but I don't think I can find very much more poundage on the cx. Thirty is still good though.

Looks good, you are making good progress.
1 question. On your rear monoshock set up; did you consider welding some stock on the top of the swing arm to strengthen the arm before welding the bottom shock brace?
I always worry about mods to a bike that could result in a failure of the worse kind at the worse moment.

there is a brace that hides under the swing arm. Also the original shock mount on the opposite drive line side was sheet metal and only welded on one side. All be it the shock was sustaining half the force, but the new mount is two 1/4 in brackets welded both sides. It is aprox 2.5 in long leaving a total of 10 in of weld holding the shock to the swing arm. In my experience that is more then enough. If you guys are really worried about this for me I can run it through my design program I just need to know about how thick the drive line tube is. Also as far as failure is concerned, I am concerned too but I don't want you guys to think I am going about this with out thought. I put alot of time into development and engineering of this stuff, but I still want to encourage you all to question everything. People in the past have brought to my attention things I hadn't considered yet that ended up being very valuable. I don't know it all and never will, it can be hard to convey my tone to people online sometimes I feel like by defending my design or by stating the tech info not seen very well in picture people feel like I am shooting them down. I am not I appreciate the input. Cheers all.

Hey, welcome! I'm new myself...
I like your design, I went the other way, I am chopping my 78 CX500. I had a question, I was wondering if you could tell me what you used on your exhaust header that seats against the heads (the actual lip on the pipe itself)? I see it has the knurled lip for the flange to hold the pipe to the head like a stock exhaust system, is there universal exhaust tubing on the market that has this already on it? I've checked out www.spdexhaust.com to get the pieces I need to weld up a custom system, but I didn't see any that were like this. I thought I'd have to take the flanges off my donor set and have the exhaust shop expand them for me. If you don't mind, please let me know how you went about doing that, it definitely is sharp.
Thanks, Lee
