Minneapolis Garage Day - May 4th
|
|
|
|
|
Dobie's '82 GLI has a dragging front brake and a notch in his steering bearing. We plan to tackle those problems in my garage on Tuesday, May 4th. (Sorry it's a weekday. We couldn't find a weekend day before the Spring Ride that works for both of us.)
Neither of us have done these jobs before, so if any of the locals are free that day, you're more than welcome to stop by to offer advice. I've witnessed the bearing change, and it appears fairly straight-forward. Are there any hang-ups that might surprise us?
Hopefully, the brakes just need a fluid change (it's dark brown) and the MC cleaned. If that's not enough, we'll move on to the caliper. None of the existing seals are leaking. Can we assume they'd be reusable?
Thanks,
R

Is he going with an All Balls kit? I hear they have the dust seals in them too unlike pyramid parts.
Wasn't bad. Just remember to clean and then grease everything.

Randall,
I hope your brake job goes better than mine: first it was going to just be a fluid change, but then I decided to replace the lines with SS, but then the Master Cylinder wasn't working so I replaced it, but then the calipers were frozen so now I'm re-building them.
I had done none of this before so it has been a learning curve with a few calls to David In Wisc. What I thought would be a one day job will be four weekends next weekend and I'm still not 100% sure about that (but still hopefull).
You may want to put Dave's number on speed dial, I did. If in the neighborhood, I'll swing buy and say hi on Tuesday.

Randall,
Why do half a job. Rebuild the calipers at the same time. I have never seen a muddy master (dark brown fluid) where the calipers weren't also in need of rebuilding. As they say in business. S**t rolls downhill. I this case it is the calipers that are downhill.
The rubbers in the caliper should never be re-used. They will have swelled from the brake fluid and age. There is good chance that they will partially come apart when you go to put them back in.
Finally ... the hoses at 28 years of age will not be in the best shape.
If anyone has an ultrasonic cleaner it will work wonders on all the brake parts. My last brake job was a wonderful experience because of it. Most of the curd will come out and the rest will be softened. It cut the work time almost in half and they were so clean the owner of the bike asked if I had put on a different caliper.
I am training right now to be a census taker and I'm not around as much as normal, but I will be happy to help if I am around, if you get hung up.

David,
I emailed Charlie today regarding the caliper kit. George Fix looks like the source of choice.
What about the MC seals? Do we need a MC kit, too? George Fix doesn't list those, and Dennis Kirk only shows the non-Interstate version. Any good sources?
I remember most of your instructions for the steering head bearings, particularly how to pack the bearings, and to get the "sticky booger" CV grease. Do I need to improvise a driver to seat the lower cone race, or will it be drawn into place like the upper when tightening the stem?
I have an ultrasonic cleaner, and had planned to use it on the MC.
Finally, Dave, can you email me your phone number? I'm sure I have it somewhere, but it would take me until next Tuesday to find it.
Thanks,
R

Randall,
You definitely want to get new rubber for the MC too. You will see why when you get it all apart.
If you know anyone who plays guitar ask them for an inch or two of the smallest string. It is wonderful for the small hole in the master. Just don't scratch the cylinder of the master on opposite side from the hole.
When you put it together I usually put a dielectric grease on the rubber pieces and and twist slowly until they fit inside. Do not try to hammer the parts in or you will be buying another, not cheap, rebuilding kit.
NAPA can usually help you with the grease. Just don't get the watery stuff.
PVC works good as a driver and/or throw the steering head into the freezer ... keep your wife happy and put it in a plastic bag.
The phone info went in an email. Just call after 5 this week ...

We're going to postpone the workday, mostly to find the best sources for parts.
Dobie recently acquired a second ride, so the urgency is gone. We may even spread the work over a few days, and not rush through it.
