Looks like they dont expect to have the Dragon (Deals Gap)open until July 31. They had a rock slide blocking the road. Ive postponed my trip till this fall.

Yeah, that sucks!!!  One of the best rides anywhere I've ever been, and it's right here in my back yard.  I can make it over the dragon, have a burger @ Deal's Gap, and be home in ~3 hrs.  I also heard they were gonna repave it while it was down.

Gotta hate it for the business folk over there.  I heard some folks were gonna loose a LOT of money over this...

While taking my MSF course I was talking to one of the instructors about the Dragon. He said to me he's never personally ridden it but have heard stories from other people. Said that it really isn't a good ride. There is so much traffic that it really makes it unsafe to ride. Anyone else have any opinions on this?

The one time I rode the Dragon there wasn't another soul around but my riding buddy, "the Mayor" ( mid March, 01) We had the whole route to ourselves, maybe that's the reason I went down in a curve, my highway peg caught in the pavement. It happened so fast I didn't know what hit me.

Yeah, CX's lean a lot farther than most people think.
I've taken the 'wing nearly to the crash guards on cheap crappy tires (Kenda).

It's a moving zoo of sportscars, SUV's bikes and everything on busy weekends.

Speed limit is something like 35 MPH, sometimes cops in helicopters. I have heard both good and horrible.

Many a squid crash, LOTS of poser roadrace wannabe's.

I dont deny it looks like it has the POTENTIAL to be a fun road if it were way out in nowhere and few people knew of it.

I know several roads in Idaho which are 100 times better for a overall sweeper turn paradise.

I rode a 100 mile section up some of the most glass smooth canyon pavement, and all I saw was a couple trout fishermen, 1 old pickup goin slow, and a crazy guy in a hot Mazda Miata !

No way I would ride the gap......much better options elsewhere.

Since they repaved the dragon a few years ago it isn't nearly as scary. It is still fun, but not scary fun like it was.

The dragon itself is open. You can enter from the NC side, ride the dragon, turn around, and come back. The entrance to the dragon is blocked on the TN side.... which might mean no TN police! We always turned around at the end and rode back anyhow.

It's great to ride on an off-day, any day but the weekend really. Totally worth it, even at low speeds. It's just fun, twisty, and technical.

Can you get to the Foothills parkway at the north end of the Dragon?
