CX500T hot restart problem
|
|
|
|
|
My CX500T starts right up from cold, perfectly. However when the bike is hot it won't restart. If I leave it for 5 minutes it may start, after 10 minutes it will definately restart.
It seems like the bike is cranking fast enough when hot. Although it does not always sound like the fuel pump is priming when I first turn the key. Some times it's pressurizing and still it doesn't start.
I have adjusted the valves, changed the plugs, cleaned the jets -Pb etc.. checked the air filter. At idle the bike seems to be running rich also.
Any ideas?

Sounds like you may need to check your engine temperature sensor that sends information to the ECU - wiring or sensor resistance (hot and cold).

open your air valve up by removing the glue on the nut, and adjusting it to the far end of the spectrum... I would first check the temp sensor as Don stated, and also check the TPS.

Does it act flooded during the hot restart?
If you have a leaking injector will act the same and cause hot restart. The check would be a fuel pressure gauge attached shut down hot and fuel pressure should remain for about 10 to 20 minutes depending on check valave in the fuel pump. Drippy injector would also run rich at idle. Fuel pressure gauge would also varify the fuel pump action during restart.
The other check would be get it hot, shut it down and quickly pinch the fuel lines to the injectors. Let it sit 5 minutes and try to restart (release the pinch). How does it starts.
One other point do you have fresh fuel.....depending on your location......winter fuel in hot weather can cause all sorts of hot restart problems.....winter fuel has a different vapor point. Winter grade fuel in CA not a problem.......

Thanks guys for all your good information. I'll try and get it sorted out this weekend. Starting with the easiest stuff first. I'll let you know how I get on.
When I attempt the hot restart it doesn't fire at all.
What do you recommend pinching the fuel lines with?
Cheers,
Martin
Update: After warming the bike up, and the bike wouldn't re-start, I opened the air valve, no improvement. I cleaned off the temperature sensors connectors, but haven't tested them yet. The bike when it starts, it is instantaneous hot or cold, when it won't start, cranking for a while does not help.

Looked at the fuel lines pinching might not be that easy.......maybe instead get it hot....try to restart...get the failure and quickly pull the plugs to see if there wet with gas....that could indicate leaky drippy injectors or very rich mixture that is not needed hot.......which could be temp sensor etc......
Pinching with a long nose vise grips with the jaws protected with heavy tape....or they make plastic line pinchers that are also useful when pulling fuel tanks.

It's a bit difficult to pinch the lines to the injectors - the fuel manifold is solid from the fuel inlet to the regulator and around to the injectors - NOWHERE is the fuel to EACH injector in a flexible route.

The hot restart is hit and miss, sometimes it will fire right up and sometimes it will not. I've tried running the bike on premium gas and adding Seafoam in a lazy mans attempt to clean the fuel injectors.
The bike definately runs rich at idle (ever since I have owned the bike). What are the causes of running rich on these bikes? Air filter is new, valves have been adjusted, Pb jets cleaned. The fuel filter is old and probably has the remains of whatever fuel was left in there 25 years ago.

Put in new fuel, change the fuel filter, and if it still runs rich, open the air valve to give it more air on start up....

Look at the cleanliness of your air filter.
Even remove the air filter to see if it allows the bike to run less rich.

The next time it does n't restart straight away when hot I'll whip the air filter out.(It could be today) Although the filter is new and not restrictive.
For the fuel filter are the originals still available? I think I saw a thread were someone made one with a plastic car fuel filter.

No longer available from Honda.
Per cxturboboost:
"I would try a Carquest 86087 filter with 1)28609 connector and 1)28622
connector. They work just fine. Don't spend a ridiculous amount on the
OEM screen
filter unless you need it for restoration purposes.

Is the picture below what you had seen somewhere? If so, its the Dan Topping fuel filter....

Well...its an extremely SLOW day at work...typical before a holiday weekend I guess.
Here is a thread from Pim in the Netherlands who was engineering his own - all progress updates to the thread stopped though after he located a NOS replacement filter. http://choppercharles.com/cs/forums/153520/ShowPost.aspx

You can also use a mid-70's Volkswagen Beetle fuel filter. It has the correct sized in/out nipples, and requires almost no
modification. Beck/Arnley 043-0792 Fuel Pump
Filter I did end up modifying mine by shortening the hoses and relocating the filter so it's easier to get at.
