The end of a career.
I retired from "Glomming" (sword swallowing) after 23 years of almost weekly shows at my then Fiancée's request.
Sold all my swords. Should have left it at that lol.
After the divorce I bought new swords and went back to work. I had been swallowing swords for a living for over 20 years. It's what I do.
Been a little over 2 years now since I started again. First fair of the new season in Escondido Ca. Second show.
I do a "drop" swallow. A heavy sword that I set in place, let go of, and use the throat muscles to drop the sword in place.
I tell the audience that the sword won't go all the way on it's on weight so I have to Jump up and down to seat it.
Well normally I get a good "Throat grip", jump up and down a couple times, then the last time after I land I let go the sword and it slides the last couple inches.
Yeah you know what's coming, I jumped, didn't have a good grip on the sword and it came down and scraped a good hunk off the inside bottom of my stomach.
I didn't know it, didn't realize I was bleeding internally at a decent rate until the next show. The first sword went in and suddenly my throat was full of vomit/ blood.
I finished that show BTW. The adults were aghast and the kids were laughing at the blood on the swords after I'd pull them out.
All said and done I probably bled for about 12 hours. It finally stopped around 11pm. There are still signs of recent internal bleeding but no signs of new or continued bleeding so we're pretty sure I'm out of the woods.
Starting to get some color back, I was pale as hell. Still tired but feeling better and am pretty sure I made it through the worst. And this was the worst. I've hurt myself twice before but nothing like this. I am going into the Dr. later for a full round of tests and I'll post after that.
The whole thing has made me take stock of life and stuff and I have to lay my swords down again. This time forever.
I've loved my career, I've carried on an ancient and dying tradition and made people laugh and smile all over the world. It's been real, it's been fun, it's been real fun.
For the official records.

Jeez. You could have punctured your stomach and be spilling its contents into your gut. I'd go to the hospital immediately. I am amazed at your apparent lack of concern. Peritonitis is nothing to laugh at.
I hope you haven't done more damage than you realize.

Holy crap, man !!!
Yeah, I agree, you better go get all checked out for internal damage !
Maybe you can find a safer job. Possibly fire juggling. or jousting with those giant Q-tip end poles !!
Personally, my choice would be a flute player or elephant dung technician, that seems like a safe level of risk.

Take care of yourself.
Glad it wasn't me. I can picture it. Sword in, jump, sword poking out my ass.
How sharp are those swords?

I'm not convinced this is a legit thread, but for a sword swallower, wouldn't it be prudent to use a sword with a cross guard (quillon) and a blade 1" shorter than the distance from your front teeth to bottom of your stomach?

Thx for the support and kind words. It means a lot. :)
I got a laptop so I can reply from bed but all signs are the bleeding has stopped and they don't have to do surgery.
He doesn't want to do a transfusion for some reason so I'm stuck letting my body replace the loss. 2 to 4 weeks, bleeeh.
Not supposed to sit up for any amount of time. Not supposed to twist or bend or lift etc.
Basically I'm not supposed to move for at least a week. Yeah that'll happen.
If there's no change I go back next week for another look see.
Thx again and I'm 10-10 on the side.

Well that would require swallowing a tape measure, which is out of his area of expertise.
Hope everything heals well.
Edit. Damnit Google chrome. You work better with every other website, am I gonna need to use a special browser just for this site?

Damn dude.... I'm sorry you have to give up your life's work but I'm so glad this didn't go as badly as it could have. Really wish I could have caught one of your shows before you retired. Good thoughts flowing your way for a speedy recovery - I get the feeling you're a performer at heart, I doubt you'll leave the entertainment circuit.

Google his name if you don't believe it. He has videos on line.
Sorry to hear about the incident. Man, finished the show! What a trooper. 22 years is a pretty good run at just about any job. Maybe go into the steam punk stuff full time?

If ya have time, click on to his 3000 website !!
I have met alot of wild folks over the decades, and Phoenix would surely rank up near the top of the creative, unorthodox heap !
If by chance you get a group of corporate bankers on one of those firewalking team building retreats.......maybe let the fire get a bit outta hand !!
Heal up quick and thourough, hope its less costly and time consumeing than the 2 year layoff from fire eating !

Thx everyone! and I've dreamed more than once of setting the fire to flare on a client, especially lawyers. It's just really bad for repeat business. =)
Had a great visit with the Doc today.
Gotta do a round of samples & tests tomorrow but it looks like I coasted this time.
Feeling better. Work is good, nothing really physical. Just sitting at the mill, lathe, drill press, workbench or stuck in a meeting.
Another positive. The lump on my back is just a fatty growth. I didn't even tell the GF about that test lol.
Instead of the sword swallowing and other sideshow arts I'm dusting off my old knives and throwing them at the GF. She's actually excited about it!
So watch for our "All New"' Knife Throwing, Sword Balancing, Whip Cracking act!
Should be ready in about 3 to 4 months at the earliest.
See ya then!

I hope your girlfriend is slender. But then again if she's fat I would think that depending on the amount of cushion it would save her life from a killer knife.

I have a customer who is an emergency room doctor. He told me he could write a book about the objects he has pulled out of people............but they weren't swords..........and they didn't go in from the top.

Friend of mine used to be a fire-eater before his girlfriend at the time begged him to quit. I guess she didn't like his morning-breath.
At another friends' party once he was doing some demonstrations (outside obviously), and we started setting up things for him to ignite. The best show was a big old doghouse that was on the farm when they moved in. We jammed it full of paper, sawdust, wood and old straw and then dowsed it in diesel and gasoline and stood well back while he did the honours. We caught it on film; a stream of fire into the doorway of the doghouse, a split second of calm and the suddenly all hell broke loose. Every seam and crack glared white for a second and then the thing just blew apart.
Way cool and stupid dangerous. But if it hadn't been him it would have been one of us tossing matches at it...
Congrats mnkeeboy on surviving your career long enough to retire.

Man! I hope you are OK. That story made me cringe.... then suddenly I was hungry !? I worked with this girl at Subway that could put all sorts of long objects down her throat. Hmmm.
I would LOVE to see a live knife throwing act! If you ever tour around Oregon, post it up here.
Take care,
Dylan
