Canada's on fire - anybody smell it?
Reply Quote
SO the fires in Quebec must be amazingly awful, because I live in S.E. Mass, on the RI border, and the air was clouded and smelled like a pile of wet leaves burning today. The smoke blew all the way down from Quebec, at least a couple hundred miles, so how bad must it be right there? Any of the rest of you guys notice it? The air in my whole town was literally smoky, like every single person in town all decided to burn their leaves at the same time. Craziest thing I think I've seen for a while.

No, can't smell that one Kingston but the season for forest fires is here.
The boreal forest (map) in Canada has an average of 8000 fires a year, about half started by lightening, the rest man-made, some purposefully set as make-work projects by northerners. A yearly average of 6 million acres goes up in smoke and even here down on the prairie we get smoky days when the wind is northerly. We have a family wilderness cabin in the Shield, some days the sun is orange and the visibility is less than half a km. When ash starts falling, it's time to go, even though the fire may still be a long way away.

I noticed the delicious aroma of wood smoke around 9am in Cambridge, MA... then figured something was up when I could barely see Boston over the river an hour or two later.  My parents were in Montreal this weekend; they must have had it bad.

More like soggy canadian maple trees. I guess they weren't all that soggy though if lightning made them ignite.

If they got a fraction of the rain we had here in New Brunswick today there wouldn't be a fire left burning in the whole province.
