Yep, I'm bikeless at the moment. Sold mine to a local guy that didnt seem to be phased by its imperfections. He's gonna fix it up and give it to his son as a HS graduation present so they can ride together, pretty cool. I'm going to go for either a full size touring bike or a sportbike for my next ride, the GL was rock solid, just never did anything for me really.
I pointed the new owner to this place but he's "not a computer kind of guy" so I doubt he'll be joining. I'd like to thank you all for your advice and insight, it was priceless.

All the best Pilot. The lowside pictorial caused some of us to think about riding gear and may very well save someone else some grief. And thanks for the tip on the polyurethane foam and Aircraft Spruce and Specialty. Dave gopher

Don't leave just yet. Just because you don't have the bike doesn't mean you're out of the club. A lot of us have different bikes and if you tell us what you're thinking we can probably point you in some direction.

I'm not out the door just yet 'stitch. Well my current wish list goes something like this (in no order): -Kawi Voyager -Yami Venture -Kawi ZRX -Aprilia Futura/Falco -Yami FJR1300 -Kawi Concours 14
I'm trying to figure out if I want an cross country couch, or a canyon carver. The FJR and Concours strike a bit of a balance, but really nice voyagers and ventures can be had for way less $$, so I'm leaning that way.

Yup, I keep lurking here because this forum seems way more fun than a lot of others..
If you're looking for sporty touring fun for less $$ don't overlook the Kawi Concours 1000.
It's true they're big and top heavy and some can be buzzy, but coming from a CX/GL you can already deal with these things.
Most of all I love the well planted handling, buckets of torque and <4000rpm highway cruising.

Why isn't an ST1100 on your list? Don't buy anything else until you ride one.

Basically for the same reason the concours 1000 is missing: I'm not fond of its looks. That's not saying I would turn down a great deal on one, thats how I got my GL, but it's not a first choice.

ST1300 is way better than ST1100, at least according to my Uncle who loves his so much he won't let me try it.
While having his 1100 serviced the dealer tossed him the key for a 1300, one ride and the trade up was made.
A bit funny looking yes, but think electric adjustable windscreen!
I must admit I'm not concerned too much with motorcycle looks, I don't think any are particularly good or bad looking. I'm more into what I can do with them. That's just me though, if everyone was like that Harley wouldn't sell anything..

I've seen some great deals around here lately on a few Connies.....I'd have gotten one but I just spent a wad on a machine for my business that folds/stuffs/seals letters and envelopes...got tired of doing 1200 of them a week by hand for 10 years, so it took priority...so sometime down the road maybe.

Hey Doug I noticed the 86 interceptor in your signature...I found a good deal on an 84 750, but I was wondering what the ergonomics were like. How's yours feel?

Hi SGTOP,
Our Interceptor is a 500, and I've never ridden a 750 so I'm not sure how relavent my impressions are.
It was supposedly the best handling bike you could buy in 1986, by modern standards the handling is still good, light and flickable, but it's down on power and the brakes are a little weak. Compared to a CX it's nice and smooth with fabulous brakes.
Maintenance is an issue, it's a big job to get at the valves to set them and of course all V4 Hondas have the infamous top end oiling and camshaft wear issues. There are aftermarket remedies available but our bike seems OK and doesn't get ridden hard so I don't worry about it.
Just my opinion, but I wouldn't get involved with an Interceptor unless it was in fabulous shape, a screaming good deal, and you enjoy wrenching.
Notice I'm not obeying my own advice here (again). The Interceptor is primarily my Wife's bike, we've owned it for 11 years and she rides about 1000km per year so I don't have to work on it too often.
Ergonomics, it's a bit small for me but I'm 6'1". Riding position is sporty, but not nearly as extreme as modern sport bikes. V4 engine is narrow so the bike is not wide, which is great if you're not tall, or don't like riding with your knees splayed out.
The CB700SC Nighthawk S is a much better bike from the same era, the looks may be an issue for you but it's got shaft drive and hydraulic valve lifters so there's very little maintenance.
I hope that helps,

Thanks for the info DougD, I forgot about the nighthawk being shaft drive. After pondering the situation, I think I'm just going to hold off on another bike purchase for a while. I dont have to have a bike, so I'll resist the impulse buys that usually turn into huge projects for me.

I have been looking at Yamaha Ventures, the later models (87-91) with the bigger bags. I have heard they handle sportier than the GoldWings and Voyagers, while still being comfortable for long trips. In my area I have seen nice ones for ~$2500-$3000. What gives me pause is the gas mileage, hard to beat my GL650 Silverwing at 50mpg +. The Venture though looks cool to me, and a 700 mile day would be a bit more comfortable than on the GL, and I could take more stuff along. The cruise control and on board compressor also would be handy on a long trip.
The statement you made about not having to have a bike bewilders me.
May the wind always be at your back and the sun overhead as you make your way down the ever winding, smoothly paved, traffic free road!

Yeah, me too. I haven't been bikeless for 18 years. Then again, I'm not a pilot so that may have something to do with it...

haha, well I dont need it for transportation, I got cages that are faster and better handling than the GL to get me around. Dont get me wrong, I wish I could be riding right now, I'm hoping that good things come to those who wait [for a reasonable amount of time].
