It would be interesting to know what the percentage of the total questions asked these replies represent as WMW notes. Canadians have been amused by this type of entertainment for many years through Ric Mercers cheeky "Talking to Americans" show. Google it. I have travelled a lot in the US, but not recently, and from personal experience I would have to say the general level of awareness of the rest of the world is not very high. There are some very knowledgeable and worldly American members here, Cobram, Jay, George.. Is there a "Talking to Brits ( Swedes, Canadians.. ) show in the US?

If the high school I teach in is any indication of the general level of education in the US, that video is pretty spot on. If it''s not on youtube or facebook, a high school age kid will probably not know it.

I am constantly appalled and disappointed in the level of education that Americans exhibit. And it isn't alway the younger ones, a lot of older people have absolutely no idea of what is happening in the world. And sadly, don't care to know.
I think a lot of it stems from our educational system coddling students and saying that everyone is a winner, whether they learn or not. The rest comes from parental expectations of our kids. If we don't motivate them to learn, read and become connected to the world, they certainly won't on their own.
My family didn't have a TV until I was 12 years old, so what we did for entertainment in the evenings was to pull out a World Book Encyclopedia and start reading. Amazing stuff in there. The Internet may have more information, but having a book in your hand seems better.
Enough ranting, nothing is going to change except for the worse.

It's called wikipedia people, as in how not to embarass yourself on television. The "Axis of Evil" one I can at least understand, anyone who listened closely to Little Shrub speak after the first term lost an unfortunate amount of brain cells. I even had a homework assignment for a critical thinking class in college where you had to guess which statement was made by the former president, and which one was a second grader's homework. The truly sad part is how hard it was to tell the difference.....

Like Misunderestimated.
Somebody wanted to use the word as the title of my college graduating art show. Guess who almost died. It wasn't me.

Yup, there have been a string of idiots occupying public housing on Penn Ave. The current resident is no exception. Somewhere in Kenya a village is missing it's Idiot.

There's Jay Leno's "Jay Walking" bit - "Talking to Californians" more or less. And heavily edited, of course.

I think you could find people like that wherever you go around the world. I met people in China who believed that the Chinese invented pizza, and that Edelweiss and Happy Birthday are Chinese folk songs.
That being said, we Americans have a horrible tendency to be incredibly self-absorbed. But from what I have seen from the (albeit few) Europeans I have encountered (present company excepted, of course), Europe, while being aware of the world, continues to plod along more or less selfishly.
I think the bottom line is that everyone has a tendency to not care about anything beyond our own little bubble. Some people just do that so effectively that it is entertaining.
