CX650T Buying advice needed!

Greetings Everyone,
I came across this site through google while searching for info about the Honda CX650T. After reading through a number of posts and gathering that you are an enthusiastic and kind group of people I am hoping that you can assist me with an opportunity I may have before me.
I have the opportunity to purchase an ’83 Honda CX650T from a friend / acquaintance. I am unaware of the minor details of the bike (mileage, cosmetics, etc.) at this time as I have only seen it once for a brief time. It is in non running condition. I know that it has been stored inside but that it was not properly prepared for storage. I do not know the extent of this lack of preparation and I would guess that it has been sitting for about 20 years give or take. I am assuming that the antifreeze was left in it as well as fuel in the tank and in the system. I would be sure that at the least it needs carbs cleaned and a thorough tune up and general maintenance. It may need much much more.
So here is the $64,000 question… Based on my very vague description what would be a fair and reasonable ballpark price? (I am located in the Eastern time zone, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, etc. for geographical reference.) What should I be looking for and expecting if I get involved in this? I know that these motorcycles have a few prominent concerns / problems. I have also gathered that they are complex and that some problems may not be easily worked out without a lot of time and money. Sensors, electronics, parts prices, availability and the list goes on. I’m not looking to screw anyone or to get screwed as I know the person selling. Any and all feedback with respect to this would be appreciated!

Despite the CXTs complexity you would be surprised how few issues it has, and with its shaft drive + computerized fuel injection (no carburetors), it requires less maintenance than many non-turbo bikes. If the 650TD is not running, it is going to be difficult to know if the engine, gears, or clutch is damaged. Many CXT bikes were put into storage when the stator failed (the engine needs to be removed to change it out) so check the windings for shorting to ground (see here:) http://www.turbomotorcycles.org/TMIOA/TechHelp_Honda_Stator.aspx That's not a deal killer, but you'll have a better idea what to offer for the bike. Parts- the stator (a better one than the original) is available, but the parts stream for gaskets, sensors, bodywork, even the rear brake rotor is pretty dried up. The fuel system should be cleaned all the way from the tank to the injectors. Check the condition of the oil- if anything, you'll know if anyone ever bothered to change it. Check to see if the fuel pump works. And the same stuff you would check on any bike. Are the tires dry rotted? Is the fork leaking? Are the brakes binding? Again, more hours of (tedious, relaxing, frustrating, whatever your state of mind is) work/fun. It will all be worth it when you take it on the highway and it introduces you to its little friend, which spins at over 100,000 rpm!

I don't think you want it... Sell it to me :)
It's what you make of it... Sometimes parts do add up fast though... know what you are buying and buy smart.

Not sure if you guys saw his update, since he had two threads going on the same topic:
Chromesjt wrote: | | Hey All,
Thanks for the advice and the thoughts on the Turbo. As it turns out,
my lack of exposure to the bike in question meant that I was mistaken
on the model. It is not a CX650T but rather the rather the much more
common VF750F Interceptor. I appreciate all your input and it sure was
fun learning about the CX650T. |
