Yah, I like this open feeling much better. it's now a lot easier to get in and out of. I will be using a motorcycle or snowmobile windshield. I bought a ten foot marine cable for the throttle control, hooked that up yesterday. I now have the clutch and rear brake slave cylinders mounted up and ready for plumbing, just waiting for my caliper rebuild kit from Australia.

Today in Lowgap: I fabricated some steel curves with end clamps) to strap the shifter cables into those tight bends near the tranny, and installed the cables for the shifter. Now it's a matter of hooking up to the shift rod at the tranny and the 5 on the floor shifter in the cockpit. Tomorrow we have Snowbirds migrating through, so won't get much done tomorrow.

Today in lowgap: shifting cable (one continuous loop with a split at the tranny shifter lever connection) is completed. Tomorrow the coolant lines will be completed and I can then reinstall the floor pan and the shift lever. life is good down here in Dogpatch. Last night my neighbor delivered a two quart Mason jar of white lightnin to my door. Life is getting even gooder down here in Dogpile.

:sigh: I remember hikers getting shine while we were hiking the Appalachian Trail. Home made hooch in mason jars. You know, the south gets a lot right. Especially North Carolina and Tennessee. I've been through Lowgap, I walked through those all those mountains from Georgia all through Virginia and the Blues and Smokies were far and away my favorites. People were great too. Lucky lucky mug you are Phil. If you ever get to the NWern corner of the country I can't promise shine, but I can promise homebrew and maybe some mead if you're lucky. I generally don't bother to distill. Beer and wine do it just fine for me.

you never offered me any home brew!!! I am disappointed now! I am planning on being in Redmond, Oregon in July and you should too. The BMW National Rally is being held there and it isn't just for BMWs. You could always bring some of that home brew to the rally ...

253 miles from my place. I have to say, a trip that size freaks me out. The idea of being broken down far from home gives me the willies. I REALLY want to do it though. And I could swear I said if you're ever nearby again (like to the airport up in Shelton for a BMW rally) there'll be home brew for you. I need to get five gallons of mead going which would be young but ready to drink by July, but I've got this real big 11% alcohol Belgian Trippel IPA based on an old old Pirate recipe (the beer this recipe is based off of is called "Pirat") that'll be perfect by then. If I'm there, I promise to hand you one of those :). -nick

BTW - Phil, now that that seat is in there, you can get a much better sense of size from the pics. From the earlier pictures, I thought that this thing was going to be MUCH bigger but now it looks downright tiny. What is the overall length of this going to be? Doesn't look like it'll have a much longer wheel base than a motorcycle.

Clumzi, The wheel base measures 104" Add about 36" more for the front & rear overhangs. Quite a bit more than a motorcycle alone. I just got done fabricating hangers for the coolant pipes. Stopped for lunch and going back to the shop soon. weather couldn't be nicer.

I do 600 miles each way each summer to attend the Amish Rally. You can probably make it all the way each way even if your stator were to go out if your battery is charged!

You need to attend this rally for all the tech sessions that apply to all bikers and not just BMWs. What you can learn about tires and oil alone make it worth the ride, let alone all the bands and the cheap beer!

My Friend and fellow CX'r mr softie is here helping me get this beast on the road. yesterday we finished the cable shifter and after testing it out, immediately abandoned that idea. We sat down at the bench and designed a mechanical shifter that is simple and should work fine. We went shopping for the necessary materials and, while Sam welded, Gary, Dennis,& Steve talked politics, we managed to get a couple bushings and the clamps fabricated. come back tomorrow for more updates with pictures.

It didn't work, Where the left side cable made a sweeping turn at the front and coming back to the shift lever, the whole cable pulled out of shape. The new mechanism is simple and most of all, it works. Today we got the shifter completed, the clutch and rear brakes are connected mechanically and I positioned the ignition switch and choke on a flat panel over my left shoulder. Pictures here.

Today in Lowgap! Steve and I worked dilligently all day in a shop that was considerably cooler than yesterday. Sam my friend brought me a heater which will feel really nice tomorrow. We installed the left side armrest with the electrical controls from both handlebars on it. Fabricated a battery hold down clamp, mounted the turn signals on the roll bar and filled the cooling system with coolant, installed the gas tank with a new hose.

La Cosa fired up and running
Reply Quote
Steve (Mr softie) after much wiring terminal cleaning, petcock tinkering and mild cussing, Got lacosa fired up and then adjusted to idle nicely. I have to thank Pete my Son in law for totally screwing up all the carb settings. While Steve was doing what he does best, I was hooking up two seperate headlight systems. Tomorrow to Auto Zone to pick up a rear brake hose and a lighter duty turn signal blinker for my 180 degree turn signals. Wow, things are moving. Sorry David, nothing to take pictures of lately.

Not much progress here today, cold and rainy all day, just puttered around taking care of some details. I'll be rebuilding the front calipers tomorrow and plumbing the front brakes after that, got to get a 1/8" tee for the new hydraulic brake light switch and fashion a mount for the rear hose, Steve, I miss you already.

Thursday: I spent a good part of the day disasembling the MGB calipers in order to replace the seals. A real PITA job but a necessary one, man were those pistons stuck fast. Last time I had to deal with a problem like that, I drilled and tapped a hole for a bolt to push the piston out. Today, reassembly.
Thank God it's Friday!
Whew.

Are you trying that plot on for size Phil? I think one size fits all... Funny photo! Hang in there...The weekend starts now!

May the wind always be at your back and the sun overhead as you make your way down the ever winding, smoothly paved, traffic free road!

Friday: I finished The brake calipers today. The last outside piston would not come out so I resorted to drilling and tapping a hole in the back of the cylinder and using a bolt to push the piston out. Then I wrapped a bolt with teflon tape and plugged the hole. Tomorrow is plumbing.

Steve, The picture was taken 3 Amish Rally's ago in Centralia, PA on our way to a coal mine tour.

The picture? A friend who lives on a mountaintop in VT off the grid with an interesting collection,

Lazy moods have befallen me. yesterday I fabbed a frame mount for the rear brake hose and welded it to the frame. Today...so far I have rearranged a closet and took a walk up to the top of the hill to sit on a neighbours glider and enjoy the vista. And now, the Wife wants to have a look at Steve's campground. I think she's interested in the investment. Steve, keep the numbers to 100 or less.

We spent most of today searching locally for some nice alloy wheels and I finally copped a pair for $36.00 each. (hard to find wheel) I think after I polish them up they will look great on La cosa. Tomorrow,
I should be able to post new pictures tomorrow. Think Kraeger wheels.

turkey day. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

I got the left front wheel swapped today. Absolutely gorgeous day till the sun went down, then turned cool. Here's a picture of the vintage mag wheels I got. Where in hell did that picture go? Be back when I find it.

Thanks Stitch. I kept getting rejected because the pic was too large.

Not a lot going on lately. The hubs are waiting for seals, the wheels are waiting for tires, and I am waiting for Santa clause to bring me a Trail Tech Vapor dashboard.

Today: I have been working on the dashboard and windshield mounts while I wait for grease seals, I finished plumbing the brake lines, so as soon as the calipers are remounted, I'll have brakes all around.

Yee Hah. I got brakes all around today. Replaced some bolts in my stearing with carrage bolts so the gaitors don't drag. Nothing between me driving it but a steering shaft and wheel hook-up. (Oh , and tires)

If I had known when I removed the rear brake pedal it was going to be such a p.i.t.a.
to hook up my new hydraulic stop light switch, I would have left the old mechanical
switch in place until it was time to switch the wires. Finally, I found them and
now I have brake lights. Yee Hah
