For some reason honda hasn't made any cooking appliances for the touring cyclists. If only they had a crock pot power source and attachment. Of course it would need a locking top. Then it could be put in the milk crate or a custom sissybar/luggage rack.

I won't be ridng the motorcycle 1240 miles. I'll put the motorcycle into the back end of the Chevy Van and drive it out & back. So it will be easy for me to bring something simple or easily made with me. I'd need access to someones oven for 50 minutes. Either Sweet & Sour Chicken legs, or BBQ Chicken legs. Yep. I can deliver.

Some years ago, I received a gag-gift for Christmas. It was a Cookbook for Rednecks. Basically, everything was cooked under the hood of a car by placing items onto the exhaust manifold, and then taking a drive. You'd arrive with dinner piping hot. Literally. Well, assuming your road trip was not too distant. I wonder if our CX & GL exhaust pipes would cook the little Pillsbury Doughboy into like Cinnimon Rolls? Hell, I can't even spell it.

Steps 1 and 2 done for the spring ride.
Found a place to stay and put in for that friday off so I can drive up.

I guess now all I have to do is figure out how many other steps there are along the way. Still have to install a standard tank on the custom for increased gas range. But first I have to clear coat it on a warm day. Probably in april.

Oh yeah and get the bike home to start riding it in april.

The Custom model only has an 85 mile range because the gas tank is small. Anyway, yes, I will transport the bike in the back end of the van. Have to remove the windshield, but that's easy. I have co-workers who belittle the bike. One ex-marine once asked me if I ever planned upon graduating up from the motor scooter I was riding. Grrrrrr. Also, when riding home one time, a BMW rider pulled-up to a light I was stopped at, popped his helmet face-cover, and asked why my bike sounded so buff, even though it was only a 500. I pointed-out his 1000 was a 4-cyl, making them 250cc each. Mine was a twin making them the same 250cc each. I don't think he was convinced. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the Twin Cities ride.

I know we are <4 months away from the Twin Cities Spring Ride, but I have some requests. What 5-22 hour am I due at what address? Can you recommend a Motel that is close and not too difficult to find by an out-of-towner using a print-out of Mapquest instructions. Please.

"Deal with it." LMFAO! Well, my '80 CX500 is in pretty good condition, but I'm from model year 1953 and require more love and care. And feeding. Huhh, heavy on the feeding. Anyway, putting the bike into the Van has been done before, and serves to reduce wear-and-tear on the antique. Antique Me, not the antique bike.

I think last year we left Randall's at 10 am at the latest but I could be wrong. Not sure about the hotel as I've been lucky and found lodging with friends.
I can tell you that lately I have been staying at La Quinta Inns.

I think this is around where we're meeting. I followed Greg there so I'm not sure.

Drive or ride it's the same thing when I do it on the bike. In fact I think the bike is in better shape than the truck.

At least I know that for under $300 I can do a triple bipass on the bike and possibly get another 50,000 out of it.
I may just start collecting parts now and think about it next winter. Oh and it costs about $100 to drive the truck up there.

So the bike it is.

Randall, I may or maynot have been on county O but I do know that any alphabet road in WI is a good one. And, by the way they are (almost) never gravel. I know that right now you aren't planning on going this far south but the county roads around Maiden Rock are really cool. Take a look at 'S' and "CC"...

Here's a variation that takes us down to Wabasha, MN / Nelson, WI, with a circuitous route that picks up parts of County Roads A and CC, and still includes O.  This stretches it out to 217 miles, about 6:15.

Is this too long?  (Last years ride was about 5 hours, but with the cold weather, it seemed much longer.)  A 10:00AM start would have us finishing around 5:00 or 5:30 (assuming a break or two), which would be just about right.

Opinions, please.

I'm trying to fit lunch into this.  How about a variation of the variation?

This has us crossing at Prescott, and taking US-10 and Cty Rd O, then crossing again at Red Wing, where we can stop at the place Nate recommended.  The stop will only be about 2 hours into the 6 hour ride, but considering that some of you will have made an early start to get to the departure point, lunch around noon should be about right.

From Red Wing, we'd take US-61 to Wabasha, cross to Nelson, hit Cty Rds CC and A, then take WI-35 (including a twisty section I'd missed before) to Prescott, and return through Stillwater as before.  (215 miles, down to about 6:00.)

My Standard can probably get by with one gas stop in Wabasha (same for the Deluxes and Silverwings.)  The Customs will probably need a couple more, maybe Red Wing and Prescott?

Well since I was at last years event I can tell you after a while it started feeling like a plague. I think that's why Ron skipped out. Not everyone is a long distance slow speed rider. And then there are the others of us who haven't even started to warm up at 200 miles.  That second leg alone is going to be 5 hours knowing that filling up will be necessary.

I would probably focus on 150 miles and have an alternative route halfway through in case the people want to extend or shorten it.

I don't know what's in this area but even 150 miles is 4 hours plus.
Random edited map to who knows where.

If you throw in a light lunch spot or place to BS that will break the 5 hour mark.

Either way it's a lot farther than the vintage moto guys will do here in Milwaukee. It's pulling teeth just to get in 80 miles at 55mph.

So, does that mean you like the extended route, or not?

I think last year's would have been fine if temps hadn't been in the 50s.  Maybe I can plan to truncate it if the weather is cold again.

Well I'm not sure about either route since I've never been down them but I can tell you that I plan on bringing my tourmaster synergy heated vest and by then I should have the standard tank mounted on my bike so I don't have to stop every 80 miles like an old man with an overactive bladder.

I was just thinking about our less experienced members.

I'm sure I'll know how I feel after traveling the nearly 400 miles up and back. I'm going for a 1000 mile weekend.

Hey Guys,

I don't want to sound like a wimp but I was getting intimidated when you were at 4 hours.    Living in Maple Grove I'll have to add about 30-45 minutes on the front and the back ends and just that commute alone is more time than I have on the bike, total, to this point.   I certainly don't want to ask the long haulers to take a shorter trip just for me but I will certainly be looking for a shorter version that I can cut out on and head back.   I know that means I'll miss some great roads but I am more concerned about my stamina and getting home safe after what will be a long time in the saddle for me.   As a newer rider I don't want to push it too much.

My greatest hope is just to meet some of the guys that have helped me out here on the forumn and to visit with some real CX/GL faithfuls so, regardless of how long you make it, some shorter options will be appreciated.

Looking forward to it!! As a nature and snow sports enthusiast, this is the first winter I can remember where I am actually ready, in February, for winter to be over.

I'd hate to see you ride back alone.  I think that would be harder for a new rider than taking the long route with the group.  And as long as we make frequent stops, you'll be surprised how much saddle time you can endure.

How about if I map both routes, and we see what the consensus is at lunchtime?  If we're cold and miserable, we take the short option.  If it's 80 degrees, and we're all feeling good, we can add the two hour loop.  If the group is big enough, we could split up. One group could kill two hours in Red Wing until we regroup, or go on and start the party early (Heidi usually has the grill going before we arrive.)  Just don't eat all the goose kabobs before we get there.

Maybe a "crappy day" contingency should become a standard feature of the Spring Ride.

Thanks,

R

A very important part of this get together is the BBQ in Randall's back yard, an opportunity to meet face to face with all these formerly faceless internet friends.

I was the one suggesting getting further from town to hit some interesting roads. I now am understanding that this suggestion may not jive the best with the goal mentioned above. With that being said, I am now backing off of my suggestion. Perhaps a quick and easy ride which allows more time to acquant is a better idea. Also an earlier gathering time at Randall's in the AM would help us have more time at the back end.

One such quick ride I have done is to take a southern route via county roads through Cottage Grove and east to Afton, then south to Hastings, jump across the river to Wisconsin, then north up to Hudson. From there we could check the clock and either zoom home on the Interstate or head north to Stillwater, then home via State 36. Lunch would either be in Prescott, WI or Hudson, WI depending on the time when we are in either town.

Hope this doesn't muddy things up...

I'm lurking in the background listening to all of this planning. You'll come up with kewl stuff to do. I'm 85% sure I will be there, especially with all of my pre-planning. Now a 5-22 ride in Montana would be a crap shoot weather-wise as early June snow storms are the norm. Light dustings, but snow storms nonetheless. BTW, I have Thursday 5-20 to Monday 5-24 off from work, so vehicle failures and ill-health would conspire to interfere with my attendance. At an ancient 56, ill-health could certainly interfere.

I see your extensive planning, and raise you an internet joke named "Bud Light Clothes Drive:" http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid1125919467?bctid=63259762001

This is taking lotz o'planning.

Can I use your oven both B.R. (Before Ride) to cook the Sweet & Sour Chicken Legs, and A.R. (After Ride) to reheat the Chicken Randall?

Can I do some infomal name-badge thing, including safety pins? Blank cards with a logo, a sharpie, and safety pin.....

Has anyone thought to thank you for the work you guys are doing? Do we need to take up a donations drive to buy your spouses Valium? Or do the ladies know what's happening, and rendezvous at the local watering-hole in anticipation?

Randall,
I'll be coming up from Rochester and I don't have any preference about the route. I'm just happy to be riding in this great group of guys. I'll probably come up for the start and make the decision to peel off later.

Sorry, I got a little too ambitious.  I need to accept that we can't ride every road on a given day.

Let's drop the Wabasha / Nelson loop, and keep it at 4 hours.  That way, we won't overtax the less experienced riders, and we'll finish earlier, so Dave won't have to skip the party to go home.

I'll try to post the official invitation this week, as well as the Craigslist ad and direct emails.

Well ya know we could have two rides. Those who really want to log the miles can get up even earlier and drive around minneapolis till it's time to head over to your place. That would satisfy both groups. Those who want and even longer ride can do what Thom (Dr Neo) did last year. Where did he say he was going after leaving your place? I thought he said Iowa city. That's another 300 miles.

Don,

Thom is a true long distance rider. He had about a 600 mile day for the Spring Ride last year and I know he has done several 1000 mile days. His riding puts me to shame and I'm not too bad at it.

I just hope Thom can make it to the Spring Ride, as he has a busy summer ahead of him. He is getting married this coming summer as well as finishing his medical schooling.

Well I guess you are going to have to get back in the saddle and start catching up. If you want that friday you can drive down from minneapolis and ride back up with me. That will get you an extra 1000 but don't we have to stop for ice cream or pie due to the official rules?

This is taking lotz o'planning. Can I use your oven both B.R. (Before Ride) to cook the Sweet & Sour Chicken Legs, and A.R. (After Ride) to reheat the Chicken Randall?

Both the oven and the fridge will be available.

Also, I got your email.  I'll try to respond sometime soon.

The official notice for the Spring Ride is here.  If you've already said you're coming, I put you on the list in that thread.  Let me know if that changes.

Thanks,
