Well darn, I was planning to come up on my hack.  Maybe my hack passenger could get on the bike and lean up hill to balance the sidecar!  Actually that video looks a lot like the trip DavidF took the TWO riders on some time back.  Wonder where they went after finding the road sign?

DUDE!  Heck YES!

Put it into my calender already!  Just chomping at the bit to get my ride out of storage right now.

Hope to have it painted by then too.    Going for a Candy Blood Red with a Silver Base Coat.

I'll try to bring something in the saddle bags if there is room.

I saw a couple of places that trail or preferably a trials bike could easily turn around. I would never tackle that trail unless I had a trials bike that could handle me. Trials bikes can go almost anywhere.

No, I think I'm going to go with red Metalcast over a white metal flake base.

It will be a while before the transformation, too. I plan to practice on the spare tank, and mount that while I do the real thing.

This past November I was taught an even better way for no one to get lost on a group ride. Radios are nice, but this works even if radios don't work.

I will explain it in about 5 minutes before we take off on the ride and/or I will give Randall a call and explain it to him just in case for some reason I wouldn't be there. Don't worry about getting lost if you follow this simple plan.

I road rally. All of the participants are identifiable with door mounted numbers. When we are on "transit" the few cars in the group who already know the route are easily identified by the color of their door number. That way if you get lost, you can pick-out the clueless from the knowledgeable. I'm not suggesting we do the same, but I do suggest 2 precautions.

25 attendees to the Spring Ride? Well, unlikely we will need to "mark" the riders who know the route already. But before the ride starts, could you (1) identify for newbies like me, the few riders who already know the route? And (2) select a "Sweeper" to bring-up the rear to catch straglers & break-downs? An out-of-towner getting separated from the group could ruin the experience.

But then, I hope I'm not sounding like a winp, or offending the host(s).

As the most experienced group rider, David-in-Wisconsin will most likely be riding clean up (or is that catch up?)  He'll also give us pre-ride instructions to help us keep the group together.  Last year went very well, thanks to David.

I'll be on point again, if they let me after last year's foray onto the gravel roads.

Pulled mine out of the corner late this morning.  Spent most of my time digging the mower out and tucking the snow blower away.  Got the tires inflated, dismounted the exhaust, wire-brushed the H-box, and applied the first of several coats of black engine enamel.  (I only did a couple coats last year, and the hot spots rusted fairly quickly.)

I still have a list to accomplish before I'm ready to roll:
De-squeak the rear brakes.
Patch some tears in the rear shock gaiters (Goldwing air shocks).
Locate and patch pinholes in the radiator.
Shim the clutch.
Adjust the oil pump chain, and clean the screen.
Check drive case oil.

I also need to solder in a new starter diode, but that can wait.

I'll probably head out to the garage shortly for a couple hours tonight, then see how much I can accomplish tomorrow afternoon.  I'd like to finish by mid-week, and ride to work Thursday and Friday.

I forgot, it needs the carbs and battery installed, too.  Then tuning.

I got the rear wheel off tonight, and chamfered the brake shoes.  There's plenty of wear left (as there should be, since I never use the noisy thing.)  Also got the gaiters off the rear shocks, cleaned them with isopropyl, and mended the tears with shoe goo.  We'll see how well it holds up.

I just realized, it's way past my bedtime.

The Minnesota Transverse Twins Association (MTTA) was born during the gab-fest following the first Spring Ride on Minneapolis' Grand Rounds.  The following winter, we changed the name to Honda Transverse Twins Association - Minnesota (HTTA-MN) to appease you, Phil.

It's the same group, and this is the third Spring Ride and Barbecue that I've hosted.

P.S.  If you don't like it, file a formal complaint with the HTTA Events Committee.

3rd Annual HTTA-MN Spring Ride - Need to revisit the plan
Reply Quote
OK, I've finally sat down to work out the timeline for the Spring Ride, and I've got a bit of a dilemma.  The Minnesota chapter of  the VJMC is holding it's Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Show from noon to 3:00 on the day of our ride.  I had hoped to make an appearance around 2:30 (Think they'd like seeing a couple dozen 30-year-old Hondas roll into the lot together?), but the schedule puts us there around 3:25.

So, I see the following possibilities:

1 - We could move the departure time up an hour to 8:30.  This one would be tough for me, and I live at the start point.  We've got to remember that some folks will already be starting before dawn to get here by 9:00.

2 - We could save the hour budgeted in Red Wing by skipping lunch.  Probably not a popular option, and missing the longer break in the middle might not be for the best.  There're supposed to be free hotdogs and brats at the show, but that's not long before our own barbecue.

3 - We could leave out the Hastings-Red Wing-Prescott loop, have lunch in Hastings, then head for Stillwater.  This would shave off about 1:40, and put us at the VJMC show sometime after 2:00.  It would cut about 55 miles from the ride, including some of the more entertaining roads over in Wisconsin.

4 - We could forget the VJMC show, and stick with the original plan.  Whichever option we choose, I expect we'll be back at my place, grilling by about 4:00.

I'm at loss as to which option to choose.  Any thoughts?

Thanks,

R

Well I'm going to be putting on 700 miles at least so I could really care less how far we ride. I'm in favor of the bike show.
Leaving at 8:30 has me saying ouch. My only goal is to get there and see you guys.

I'm leaning towards #3 or #4 (shorten the route or forget about the show).
Forced to choose, I'll pick #3, shorten the route and make the show.
I have a friend who is a member of the VJM and he says good things about them.

Regardless of how many miles we ride that day, I can almost guarantee it will be my longest day in the saddle to date.    Coming from the northwest Suburbs, the ride, and then back home, will be more than I have ever gone so far.   I know that it is a drop in the bucket to what some will be riding but I guess my point is that if we have to shorten the ride to catch the VJM show I would be cool with that.    It won't be every HTTA-MN Spring Ride that we are lucky enough to have these events coordinate or that we have an opportunity to partake.

That being said, I was really looking forward to the Red-Wing loop and will go along with the crowd whatever you decide.

I agree with both gentlemen above........plus the sight of 20+ Twisted Twins arriving at one time could just be the highlight of the VJM show.

I concur, would be pretty sweet rolling up to the VJM show as a huge group of twisted twins.

Oh and looks as tho my bike will be ready to ride next weekend!!!  Hopefully tuning the carbs won't be a headache.(switched over to pods)

Excuse me? I'm the only one in this conversation so far who would ever be considered an "old fart". Now if David from Wisc joins the vote, that's another story... he really is an old fart!
