Thanks, Rich. That would be great. Are there different length spacers for the different models? The CX and GL500 should be the same, since they share the same engine block, but I could see the 650s being different.
I went this weekend looking for some coupling nuts that I could cut down and add a stud, but I couldn't find any with 10mm fine thread. My local Honda dealer said he could get the spacers, but he quoted three times the list price I found in the online fiche, so I suspect they're really NLA. I'll make some more inquiries tomorrow.
Thanks,

I just picked up a pair of spacers for the Hondaline guards from Midwest Cycle. They are still available from Honda, and at $5 a pop, they were cheaper that fabricating a pair (figuring in tool cost.)

I picked up a set of crash bars from the place on the bay. These are not like any of the ones previously shown above. The seller claimed that these will fit both the 500 and the 650.
There was no identification information provided with the bars. They are used and even have a small bit of rust pitting in one spot but it's not bad enough to do anything about. I did have to do a bit of muscling to get the mounting holes to line up properly but they seem to fit fine.
More pics here.

Hey guys, thanks for getting those pics to post. I went back and made a smaller version of the close-up just for here then uploaded it to my Comcast webspace and finally opened it in another browser and "dragged" it to the message editor. That resulted in the tilde being converted to a "percent seven e". It finally displayed properly that way.
CxSarnia, you might want to delete the huge version you posted here. It's making the entire page extra wide and hard to read.

I suppose you could take that question a little further to ask, which crash bars protect engines, fairings, etc. better?
Any thoughts?

I tested mine under very controlled circumstances, I gently laid the bike down on it's side in the garage. The crash bars and the saddlebags touched first and kept the rest of the bike from touching the floor. If I ever give them a real test, I'll try to remember to report what happens.

They look kind of like KG highway bars. I have a set sitting here in the living room to go on my bike one of these dry days. Does it have a rectangular rack at the bottom that runs under the bike?

Honda still stocks them (the part number is higher up in this thread, somewhere) for about a third of McMaster's price. They're used as a stock exhaust hanger offset on a bunch of older models.

I haven't seen any like mine yet. The one post looks almost but not
quite the same. You can't really tell in the picture, but mine mount
to an engine bolt on each side in the rear, there's a bar traveling
from one side through to the other side up front, behind the radiator,
and bottom front bolts to the hole on each side of the engine casing.
I have zero idea where it came from, it was on the bike when I got it.

Ken in Albuquerque - What kind of crash bars to you have?
A question for anyone else but especial our UK members. Dave Silver Spares sells crash bars that appear to be patterned after the Hondaline bars. My question is why would they need two different parts number, one for the CX500 A/B/Z, http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/parts/part_30626/, and one for the CX500 Custom, http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/parts/part_30540/. They confirmed that the two types are different.
Why would there need to be two different models of crash bars for the CX500A/B/Z and the CX500 Custom? Aren't the mounting points and body work virtually the same?

Stitch, Any idea where they originate? Just curious, as I know nothing about them. I'm pretty sure they are old parts, it seems like the original owner put on everything at one time, the windsheild I have is a Silloette (probably spelled wrong) which isn't made anymore.

Not sure where they originated but they are probably after-after-market bars. Maybe made a few years after the bikes came out. I don't mind them. They are a lot easier to put on the bike than others I have seen. Except mine didn't come with the section of threaded rod to go between the left and right one so I got to make up that piece.

Well, based on personal experience, I will tell you that ANY guard that bolts to either the lowest part of the engine mount/hanger, or to the bottom portion of the engine will provide limited protection. My bike was fitted with after-market guards, and not only are they ugly, and restrict movement of your leg & foot (potential hazard in a crash), it's design will assist in the destruction of the engine. I know this only because when my bike fell over, this was how it's guard helped put too much strain on the lowest point on the engine mount & broke off a piece of the block right where the stud is screwed in.
If you closely examine the Hondaline guards, you should pay close attention to where they bolt. The highest part of the guard is what sticks out, and if the bike were to fall, the stress will travel to the TOP bolt of the engine mount (much stronger part). I should post pictures of my crap guards. After falling victim to the damage, one can plainly see the design flaws. Live & learn...
My advice? Either find the Hondaline guards for your bike, or find a set of aftermarket guards that closely mimmic the factory ones. If you have guards that bolt to the engine, or to the lowest point of the engine mount & allow the entire weight of the bike to be placed on this point if it were to fall, you will experience damage. If I get a chance, I'll post pictures to illustrate what I'm talking about...
------------
Has there every been any comparison of how well the various types or designs of crash bar's protect the bikes from damage?
I suppose you could take that question a little further to ask, which crash bars protect engines, fairings, etc. better?
Any thoughts?

Regarding the spacers for the GL500's
Couldn't the hole be drilled out just a little if neccessary?
Could someone who has these accurately measure the length of both the body and the stud. From the picture it appears to be 25mm body and 15 mm stud. Unicorp has them in stainless steel
But after posting this and searching... I saw the post with the part number.
Looks like they were also used as a muffler spacer on a CT70 back in '78 and perhaps as other parts.
Available around $4.00.
Should keep the Unicorp info handy in case they go obsoletum.

I haven't see them before, but very interesting. They would put the highway pegs in a better location (further out from the exhaust). But, if you scroll down, Blindstitch has a picture of them - at a different angle from the front.

Have not seen one like mine, no idea who made it but its at least 20 years old, I added the footpegs, should pin them but at the time hated the idea of drilling the tube. Hope the link works, pic will get dumped by that site in a week so save if you want.

Does anyone know where I can get the mounting hardware for the hondaline guards that Dave mentioned in the second post? I bought the guards last fall, but they didn't come with the hardware. My local dealer says that he knew the parts I was talking about, but he couldn't order them anymore. So far, I've been unable to find a reliable dealer online to buy from. Any suggestions?

The nuts and bolts can be had at a decent hardware store. The bolt is an M10x85 (replacing the stock M10x75.) The nut is an M8, if I recall correctly.
The spacer was still available from my dealer last year. It's used as an exhaust mount on a number of '70s Hondas. Try Honda Direct Line. If you can't find them, let me know. I'll see if I can get them from my local vendor.

Hi Rodent,
I just bought new engine guards for my 80 CX500D and they are identical to the ones on your green bike. I’m trying to figure out how to mount them on (which hole/bolt to use etc). Would you mind taking a few pictures of the mounting holes/connections and send me.
Thanks,

They connect on the front of the engine near the radiator and in the back at the hbox.
Do you have 3 pieces. Two that form the bow and one that looks like a skid plate.

Here are the parts I have;
The holes/ears shown BLUE above will be connected to the front but I'm not sure the ears should be between the two nuts (shown RED below) or behind the 2nd nut (shown GREEN below).
I tried to put them between the nuts (RED) this afternoon but could not align the two pieces underneath the engine and push them into each other because the mounting ears (BLUE) were pushing against the exhaust pipes. I just did not look right. I could damage the threads on the screw if I pushed too hard.
Also, do you mean the locations shown below (sorry the picture does not show the whole H-Box) when you say "in the back at the hbox"?
Thanks,

Ok, I've read everything on this thread. The crash bars I have are the Honda Line type that came off of a CX500. I have a GL500. Everything lines up except for the missing standoff/spacer.
So, to mount these to my GL500 I just need 2 each of the following PNs??? 95801-10080-00 90120-056-010 94050-08000
Got them in my Bike Bandit cart right now for a total of $15. Just wanted to make sure before I sent them money.

This photo from earlier in the thread shows the (80mm?) bolt as 95801-1008500. Maybe it's been superseded.

The number for the spacer is correct. I'm not sure about the last number, but it should be an 8mm flange nut.
As I understand it, the only potential problem in mounting the CX500 Hondaline guards on a GL500 is interference with the fairing lowers, but that's on the GLI only.

Yeah, I saw that. Mine is just a standard GL500 so they fit fine. Just became obvious that a spacer was needed when I held them up and the measurement shown on that spacer is about perfect. I purchased the items from Bike Bandit. Thanks!
