What the hell? Your bike looks as shiny as mine! You trying to show me up? I've always loved that paint scheme. The two tone with the grey looks amazing. Did you restore it, or just take really good care of it?
If it wasn't for physics and law enforcement, I'd be unstoppable.....

Bought it pretty close to what you see there. It is original, still has most of the factory and dealer stickers on it like the break in sticker on the cluster. It is actually kinda dirty in those pictures. It had just done a 150 or 200 mile run up over 5000 feet of elevation and the front had more than a few bugs stuck to it. I really need to clean and polish a few things on it. I still have the original owners manual as well including all of the maintenance schedule items the original owner highlighted or underlined.

Nice bike. I like the exhausts and shocks. What kind of shocks are those? I can't believe how some of you have found these near perfect bikes.

Wild bike, Jason, (is it?). Don't see many Customs like that in Oz, Especially the 650 Custom, only released in USA. There are a couple here, though, but very few. Colour scheme is fantastic, would make a good chopper........lowered, raked and dumped in the weeds.
If you're still in control...You're not going fast enough.

Natrik. The anonymous poster you refer to is one of the founders of this group and I value his knowlege and respect his concerns. His anonymity is not without good reason. I, on the otherhand, know very little about bandwidth or bandboxes and really don't give a damn, I do, however, respect the wishes of Chopper Charles to keep the maintenance of his board as simple as possible. I have warned you before and again. It will be like...gone.

Thanks for the complements guys.
The Shocks are Progressive brand http://www.progressivesuspension.com/ I do not know the model number but I am sure I have the original box in storage with the OEM shocks somewhere. I also have the Progressive front springs as well.
The mufflers are your standard Harley Davidson style bullet mufflers. If I recall they are Screamin Eagle brand. I purchased two pairs at $15 a pair from a local flea market. They sound wonderful and allowed me to polish up the original mufflers and put them in storage.
Other than that it is a near bone stock 82 CX500 Custom with I something close to 13,000 miles as of my last ride. I have some hard bags I purchased at the last Barber Vintage Motorcycle Festival I need to get finished and installed.

I try to respect everyone too. If you noticed, my pictures
are within size specs, and I post few, on top of just linking them.
What I disagree with is this whole Chicken Little blather, and rude, obnoxious
stereotyping. Don't assume people are ruining things when they aren't, and
don't assume that new people are any less a credit to this wonderful forum.
Everyone was new somewhere at some point.
As for the anonymity, well, I'm sure everyone has his or her reasons. I just
don't appreciate an ignorant arrogance, and a need to try to regulate those who
don't need regulation. Not to mention the harsh degree of superiority and
insult in which it was done.
For some reason, some people need to play cop, and worry and fret, and
complain, and belittle. I feel that "JT" crossed a line between
helpful senior site member, and brutish prick. I've seen the same
situation occur on many a forum, and let me tell you PWG, it's not server space
that gets forums closed, it's pinheads who piss off so many people, that they
find elsewhere to go, or create another forum.
If it can be welded, wired, screwed, bolted, or torqued, lemme at it. I'll franken' fab anything.

Hey guys can we get this back to the bikes and hard work we have done on them. The section page says
"Pictures must be no larger then 640x480 and please use as FEW
uploads/pictures as possible. Preserving space is vital to keeping the
upload privilege open."
Yes I agree that hosting offsite saves bandwith but some of us dont have the biggest monitors to view photo's over 800 wide. And besides the forum takes a lot of questions and has for many years so who knows how much space is used up or how much it costs to operate this site. All it takes is for Charles to not pay the domain fee and it's gone.

I actually don't know how to re-size photos, In my limited ability, they are what they are.
Could somebody give me an easy primer on how to shrink a pic?

I think the easiest way to resize photos without having to download any major software is to get a www.flickr.com account and upload your photos there. On the page that the picture is on there is a zoom button that says all sizes. Click that. And it offers a small, medium, and large size pic and shows the dimensions. Click on the size that you want and drag and drop the photo into your post.

I use Photobucket.com. It will work just as well as Flickr (I use them as well, they just have some restrictions without a paid account whereas photobucket is completely free). IrfanView is a very simple free software program you can use on your computer to resize your pics before uploading if you want (http://www.irfanview.com/).

Mmmmm, lots of chrome and shiny machines here. Must be a USofA thang. :)
So, here is a CX500 which isn't (although it does have two Harley parts now, including a shiny one. Heh.)
Yup, updates to der spatz Ratte as blogged about at:
http://derspatz.blogspot.com/2008/05/biker-boy-rides-again.aspx
http://derspatz.blogspot.com/2008/05/cx500-rat-attack-stage-1.aspx

Next in the project are the mudguard, battery box, and pod mod ...

derspatz, yes, we americans tend to like shiny things, a bit of vanity I suspect.

Hi, I'm a new rider named Pete. I got a good deal on a 79 CX500 Custom one week ago today. Sunday I spent in a parking lot, insured and registered by Monday lunchtime, and I have barely gotten off it since.

She's the same year as me, and garaged a whole lot more. I love the engine! I always liked the look of Guzzi transverse twins and now it's almost like having one, except it runs.

Spot the coolant drip and win a dollar. The 2gal tank is getting old already. Plus, I dunno about me on a stock bike... I have some work ahead of me this winter. But that's for another thread.

Yeah my bike has no more chrome on it than when it left the Japanese factory. So it must be those crazy Japanese folks from the 70's and 80's who liked the chrome. :)

it's funny you say that because i know someone that went to work for a church up in canada and sent them a letter in advance to help get to know them. one of the things in the letter was that he was happy to be going there and he hopes they'd enjoy working with "this american". they got on him because canadians are americans too because we're all on the north american cont. by that understanding... everyone in the western hemisphere is an american. doesn't make much since to me. i thought it was just a way to tack on to our accomplishments :)
[last sentence is meant as a joke. no need to write and tell me of all the accomplishments of your country.]

This is my 81' GL500 Bobber project. I'm still working on it, but
I hope to be done my the end of the summer. The bike is ridable
now and does great on the road. So far I have $450 invested in the
bike. That includes the price of the bike.

Not a big fan of the chopper look, or the cafe racer style. For all of the abuse it takes, I actually really like the stock look of the CX 500.

Road grit and the sunset make the paint look worse than it actually is.
**These pics are hosted on my server and therefore cost charles no more bandwidth than a text post. If the forum should, for whatever reason, go away (though Charles' recent post after the outage leads me to believe that won't happen) then I would be more than happy to move the site whole-cloth to one of the half-dozen web servers that I operate.

Ok, $500 to buy, $300 more invested to replace right fork, front axle, and front brake caliper, complete sevice, new tires, replace speedo base and add new chrome covers to both speedo and tach. All in all a wonderful bike with just over 17K miles on her now. :)

It came with the bike, I considered it a real bonus. :)

The tank on that yellow one looks like the same tank on my 2002 honda shadow.
