Thanks Blindstitch. You created a great resourceful library. Maybe I missed it but I was looking to download the gl650i service manual.
It is probably possible but very time consuming to add an index to your library.

FANTASTIC EFFORTS Stitch!!
I for one know the kinda level of work that goes in to something like this - It takes "PASSION", "EFFORT" "DEDICATION" and all for the benefit of "Brother" CX-GLers
A MASSIVE CHEAR for Stich!
Although new on here - Im well known through out the UK Club and have been heavily involved for 8 years now and had to do somewhat similar for different projects!
With these kinda efforts the CX-GL will live forever!!

Re: RADIAL TIRES FOR CX FITMENT
|
|
|
|
|
NOTE: Tim has done his homework and I did not. The specific tires he mentions are suitable for use on the specific rims he recommends them for.
I will leave my original comments below intact, though, because they explain why most radial tires are not suitable for use on CX/GL bikes
It is unsafe to mount radial motorcycle tires on rims designed for bias ply tires.
Bias ply tires have the carcass belting applied diagonally (on the bias) in order to produce relatively stiff sidewalls in order to control sideways (lateral) deflection when the bike is leaned over. Bias ply tires generally have aspect ratios in the 80-100% range (eg. 140/90-16, 100/80-18). A low profile bias ply tire may have a 70% aspect ratio. They are typically designed to produce the correct tread profile when mounted on rims with widths of about 60% of the tire width. For example, a 130 section tire mounted on a 3" rim.
Radial tires have the carcass belting applied at 90 degrees and 0 degrees. This controls tread deflection better and runs cooler, but produces more flexible sidewalls. In order to provide lateral stability, they are made with much shorter sidewalls and have aspect ratios as low as 40% (eg. 280/40-15). Radials require rim widths as great as 80% of the tire width or higher to produce the correct profile.
If a tire with short, soft sidewalls is mounted on a rim that is much narrower than it is designed for, the profile will be far from ideal. Add this to a chassis that was designed to work properly with bias ply tires, and you can see why this is not a good idea.
From Dunlop's Q&A page: "Bias and radial tires have significantly different dynamic properties. They deflect differently, create different cornering forces, have different damping characteristics, as well as other differences. In order for radial tires to be introduced into the two-wheel market, it was necessary to change certain characteristics of the motorcycle. The introduction of the radial tire led to such things as modified frames, new steering geometries and suspensions. Therefore, it is recommended that a motorcycle be used with the type of tire construction that it came with originally." http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/infocenter_faq.asp

Re: RADIAL TIRES FOR CX FITMENT

The tire companies have to tell you this to keep from getting into lawsuits. This rule applies more to the bikes from the 60's and 70's than the bikes from the 80's
There is a community of Honda Magna and Sabre (V-45 and V-65) riders that have converted to radials, and there are some exceptional reviews of improved handling performance, improved fuel mileage, ride comfort, and tire longevity. Some of them have been running radial tires since 1993. Another excerpt I have run across is from a VF750F Interceptor rider who converted to radials.
Because the CX is a stressed member frame, it is far more solid than its other contemporaries from the early 80's. The 37mm forks aren't as strong as a modern bike's forks, but when braced together, they aren't slouches either. I can't speak to the Eurosport's smaller steel swingarm's ability to handle flex, but the turbo's aluminum swingarm is exceptionally strong. With the advent of Race Tech cartridge emulators, and aftermarket rear shocks from companies like Hagon, our outdated suspension becomes modern as well. I don't see any reason not to run the radials on a turbo.

And there are lots of Valkyrie & Hyabusa owners that use car tires on the rear, but that doesn't make it right.
None of the factors you mention have anything to do with why you shouldn't use radials on a CX/GL. The important factor is that the rims are not wide enough for radial tires. Running any tire on a rim that is narrower than it was designed for can result in the tire's profile being distorted enough to actually produce a smaller contact patch. That goes for bias ply tires too, but it is especially likely to cause a problem with radials because they are designed for such wide rims in the first place.
Now, if you were to change to wider rims, radial tires would be fine.

The design rim for a radial 130/80/17 is 3.5"
Design rim for a 110/80/18 is 2.5;" I believe that the front rim of an E and T is 2.15." 1/3 of an inch should be close enough to run without any warp issues.
3/4 of an inch on the rear might be pushing it for a 130, but certainly not for a 120.

To clarify once and for all: I have been in contact with Metzeler Consumer Affairs, and received an e-mail from them today:
Hello
All tires have a range of permissible rims regardless if
they are radial or bias
ply tires. Please use the attached brochure to see the tire
specs, suggested fitments, and other important technical data. Thanks
for the e-mail and have a great weekend.
NA Metzeler Consumer
Affairs 877 202-4993 www.us.metzelermoto.com
I searched through the brochure, and according to Metzeler's PDF: The design rim for the ME Z2 rear tire is 3," and its permissible rim width is 2.5"-3.5." On a turbo, with a 2.75" rim, there is no conflict in rim size. We absolutely can run this tire with no issues.
As to the front wheel, I will know more when I get home. Frankly, I cannot remember if the Turbo/Eurosport front rim is a 2.15" or a 2.5"

Are you sure that you are reading the brochure correctly? A 3" (76mm) wide rim seems a bit narrow for a 130 section radial at only 58% (pretty close to the typical figure for bias ply tires.
I checked Metzler's website and the PDF they have there does not mention
rim width at all and only indicates one size of ME Z2 exists. Hmmmm....... Could it be that someone has finally designed a radial tire to fit rims that were made for bias ply tires?
I did not realize that turbos had 17" rear wheels. The E models came
with 18" wheels front & rear. The E front wheel on my 650 is a
2.50-18. I don't know what the rear was because it was bent when I got
the bike and I rebuilt with CX/GL500 parts so I have a CX500 rear wheel.
NOTE: I do not recommend this wheel combination (rear wheel narrower than front) for 2 wheeled use, but
on a sidecar outfit it can be made to work.
BTW: Speaking of distorting the profile by mounting a tire on a non-recommended rim, I run a 3.50-18 tire on my 2.50" front wheel and it produces a nearly flat profile with a really large contact patch that works well on a sidecar outfit but wouldn't be good on a bike that leans.

I can send you the PDF that they sent me if you like.
The Metzeler ME Z2 was designed specifically for the Triumph Thruxton and Bonneville "retro" bikes. Narrow rims front and rear, and old technology suspension.
Also, I checked my rims last night, the front rim of a Turbo and Eurosport is 2.5", which means that the 110/80/18 radials are also acceptable per the Metzeler PDF.

That's OK - if you checked it and read the same thing again, that's what it says.
I will have to amend my comments above to specifically exclude these tire and rim combinations.
BUT I would caution others reading this to remember that mounting radials on the narrower rims that are standard on all models in this range except Eurosport and Turbo models can be dangerous.
