List of Parts and Availability - Stator, Mech. Seal, Cam
Reply Quote
So this kind of a repayment for all the help I received from folks on the site.  It's the list of parts I was able to track down and successfully use to replace my Stator and Mech. Seal.  My CAM and Tensioner looked OK so I decided not to replace it at 24K miles.  I used http://www.servicehonda.com most of the parts.  Used Copper Gaskets Unlimited, www.coppergaskets.us for the Turbo exhaust gasket (GASKET,EXH.JOINT).  As always YMMV, a few of the parts aren't absolutely required, depending on the condition of the dowel pins, and some of the O Rings you may reuse them.  NLA = No Longer Available.  I included the Lower End gasket set and some other NLAs to show that you need not bother trying to find the part(s).  Have to say that copper gasket from Copper Gaskets Unlimited works well.  The OEM Mech. Seal listed worked like a charm, used the press fit method as described in http://www.elsham.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/cx500/mechanical_seal/ including the rigged up press made usiing sockets.  At 600 miles now with the new stator from www.ricksmotorsportelectrics.com.  No leaks, and good charge so far...  I did follow some advice I found here about going through all the major connectors, pushing the pins out and soldering the wires to the pins. Used dielectric grease for when putting all the connectors back together.  I did notice how old and tarnished looking some of the wiring was on this 29 year old bike.  Melting plugs are not uncommon on these bikes due to poor contact and the increased resistance that causes. Cleaned and polished the main frame grounds as well.  These measures, setting the intake and exhaust valve clearances, and replacing the stator, seems to have made the stumble I had between 3 and 4K go away.  The bike now performs way better then before.  I'm no engine mechanic (Systems Engineer) but my success was due to all the excellent support from the folks here !!! Of course the cx500tc shop manual is also a must and I highly recommend Digital camera, taking pictures every step of the way and an old laptop.  When It was time to put it back together, I pretty much just had to step back through the 80 or so pictures I took and reference the manual for torque values (important!).

Thanks!  It would be easy to forget a few essential items when doing a big job like that.  What part of the stator swap proved to be the most difficult?

If you follow along the manual it's pretty straight forward. I used quart and larger zip lock plastic bags and some stick on mailing labels.  For each step of the manual, I logically grouped nuts, bolts, screws in the bags and labeled them, also referenced the page in the manual. Used a small card board box to stack the bags into in order, and as I said took lots of pictures.  I didn't loose any parts, and had no parts left over ;-)  Just take your time.  There's a lot to take apart.  I had the most "fun" putting the engine back in the frame.  Of course, I did it all by myself. It might have been a bit easier with another set of hands.  I also took a lot of time to research all the lubricants, and sealing compounds.  They're all in the manual.  Read through once to get familiar with all the steps and note down all the different compounds and lubricants you'll need and go buy them before you start.

I was having a fun time with the engine until I realized that if I wrapped a ratchet strap from frame to frame on the side, lifted and centered the engine with a floor jack, all I had to do was tighten it up.

Clicked right into place.
