Kids on bikes - thoughts and opinions?
Reply Quote
I feel like there was a thread before about this but I can't find it. I was behind a guy yesterday who had his little boy on the back of his harley, the kid couldn't have been much older than 5-6 maybe, wearing shorts, sandals, and a t-shirt and had a big full size helmet flopping around on his head. The dad wasn't wearing a helmet at all (RI has no helmet law). I just felt like this was child endangerment, it seems to me first of all that the helmet wouldn't do more harm than good if the kid fell off since it clearly was way too big and heavy for him. I'm usually a big believer in free government and don't like the feds or state to try to regulate my life more than is needed, but I'm not sure how I feel about this. Thoughts?

Yes there was a thread regarding kids on the front of a bike

http://choppercharles.com/cs/forums/152385/ShowPost.aspx

At first when I saw this thread I thought it was someone resurrecting that very controversial thread.

That's what I was looking for, ok, no need to post anything to my thread now. Thanks will, my search skills need some work apparently.

While the oversized helmet and flip flops are no good, I was once a 6 year old on the back of a Harley.  My best friend's parents were riders and some of my fondest childhood memories involve riding around with them in the summer for ice cream.  It gave me the courage to learn how to ride last year when I finally got sick of riding on the back!

Happy 8th birthday, Chi-town!........just kidding

I think Kingston meant to say the helmet would do more harm than good.

LOL thanks!  I think he's right on that.  We used to be packaged up like a lightbulb making an over-seas trip.  Properly fitting helmets, tiny jackets, and if he was in the mood, Floyd would make us wear all of our skateboarding gear under the jackets ie knee and elbow pads.  Not the most comfortable thing in the world but still worth it!

Yep, sorry for that confusion. I wasn't trying to say kids shouldn't be on a bike, but if you do ride you should make sure you AND especially your passenger are dressed correctly. I can't quote any statistics but I'm willing to bet that when somebody with no safety equipment crashes and is rushed off to the ER with life threatening injuries the tax payers end up footing the bill. In RI at least the insurance is sky high because of frequency of accidents and generally poor driving.

Chi,
Just noticed your pic, what is that big pink ring on the front? A massive horn? Airbag? Disco lights?

I thought at first it was my old thread resurrected as well !

I'll repeat my thoughts expressed in that thread in that to me it IS child endangerment !!

NO problem with kids riding but ONLY if they are protected properly....and I do feel there SHOULD be a law enforcing such !

As far as the government sticking it's nose in....if it ONLY regards children then I have no problem with it. For example the seat belt law?...who cares if an adult is wearing a seat belt or not, it should be up to the adult because that adult is old enough to make his/her own decisions but a CHILD conversely is a CHILD and the law SHOULD apply to them. Same with a bike if an adult chooses to ride unprotected then so be it, his/her choice but you better protect the kids until they are of age to decide for themselves.

MY opinion !

I'll have to put up a better picture....the original owner took off the fairing after his son crashed it, and in true hillbilly form mounted a new light that was too small to fit all the wiring.  Solution: Marlboro canteen mounted to the front of the bike.  I have a very pretty nighthawk light ready to mount in it's place since that tiny little light shakes whenever I ride, but I can't decide whether to take the canteen off.

A half-naked kid with a space helmet on the back of a HD isn't the ideal situation, but it's lawful.  Can't worry about everyone.

I was once the kid on the back of a bike, in my case a 500 Interceptor then a 700.  Gear consisted of a jean jacket, well-fitting 3/4 helmet, pants and shoes.  It definitely played a big part in putting bikes in my heart, and I wouldn't trade it.

My sister and I survived riding around on dirt and gravel roads with my dad when we were younger than that even.  It was summer and we wore shorts and flip flops all the time.  Some of the happiest times of my life.  I'm just saying.

I'm almost thinking it needs to stay but when you truly make it yours and paint it then it's whatever you want. I swear the last I saw it there wasn't a headlight on the bike.

This thread got totally high-jacked.  I definitely think kids should not wear canteens on their heads.  Wait.....what were we talking about ?

It's only OK if the kids on the front of you holding the canteen, and you are drag racing on one wheel!

I'm going to have to get on my buddy's case for some custom headlight mounts...the only real reason to remove the canteen is that the headlight arms I've found are about 3 inches short with it on there.  Everyone who's seen it says the canteen makes the bike.

So Chi-Town....what part of the City you and your buddy call home? I'm based just two miles from Midway Airport.

The run from Channahon to Starved Rock via backroads along the river being a favorite weekend trip.

Not being forward mind you, I'm a full-fledged geezer myself with kids that are likely older than you are - lol - at least in your avatar you look younger than the bike you're riding.

LOL, Randy you are on the way to one of our favorite trips and some of my nearest and dearest are self-proclaimed geezers.  I love them, they know things.  I'm in Humbolt Park/Bucktown depending on which realator you talk to.  I am indeed younger than both of my bikes, which is why they are well respected.  I'm always looking for people close by to go on rides with though, I have fewer girlfriends than fingers and about 30 "big brothers" who want me supervised at all times with the bike.
