Honda VT500 Motorcycle

I was reading a vintage motorcycle magazine and there was an article on the Honda VT500 motorcycle. They referred to it as the closest thing to a maintenance free motorcycle from Honda. It is a V-twin but the engine sits in the frame like a harley and it is almost 100 pounds lighter than a GL500. It is water cooled and supposedly has hydraulic lifters and a CDI ignition. It is also in the 1982 age bracket. I see a lot of parts for the bike on Ebay and they are not cheap at all. It is a nice looking bike and should be fun on twisties. Anyone have experience with this bike or opinions? BillRod

Never worry about theory as long as the machinery does what it is supposed to do.

Yeah, the Ascot and the Shadow both use the same VT500 engine. My buddy's had one for 17 years, I've ridden it occasionally.

As far as V-Twins go it's a sweet motor, it's an offset crank so it doesn't buzz or shake as much as the single pins. Good power and revs nice, pretty much the same as a CX. Very narrow motor too. It's got 6th gear Overdrive so nice and relaxed at highway speeds. Pretty much a nice low maintenance do-everything bike.

I think the only problem he's EVER had with it is the CDI box fried recently (see question posted in Off Topic forum). Not a big deal, $100 ebay fix.

Some interesting stats I found on these bikes:
1985 500 Shadow: 48hp / 403 pounds
Modern 750 Shadow Aero: 37hp / 577 pounds

So for power to weight ratio the 500 almost doubles the so called modern 750.

These are great bikes. Any other questions?
