Hello everybody I am just beginning the restoration of my original cx500 turbo. The bike has not been started in 15 years. It has 26000 km the problem is I started the restoration 5 years ago and took apart the bike. It now sits in a million pieces. Life caused it to sit like that for 5 years and now I am ready to start the rebuild. I have the engine off the frame so I am wondering if I should just replace the stator now and get it over with. I am also looking for info and sources of parts (engine rebuild / turbo restoration ) My goal is to bring the bike to as close to prestine condition as possible. Would appreaciate any advise.

What I would recommend is to send a picture of the stator to say, David in Wisconsin, or Blindstitch. Maybe some others could help too but it all depends on your stator color. If it is too dark of brown that shows that it is about to go from what I've gathered. I don't know much about CXT's this is all just true with the regular CX's. Also, make sure to wipe of the stator a little bit because it can appear darker than it actually is. And dont forget about cam chain (if needed) and Mechanical seal and all of your other seals to ensure a longer period of trouble free riding.

Replace the stator, cam chain tensioner, and Water pump seal while out. I would also replace the turbo oil feed line hose with newer updated hose.

I concur with Pete.

The bike is apart, do it all so you'll have years of trouble free riding.
In addition to the oil feed hose, replace the o-ring at the front of the cam shaft.  I've had this go out on three bikes.
One turbo, one Euro, and a GL650.  It's enough of a pain in the ass to replace on a standard engine, double so on a turbo.

Welcome aboard! I think that you will find this website and forum very helpful. I love these bikes and will do anything I can to help keep them on the road. I don't care about making or charging money that some so called neighborhood "mechanic" may want; all the tech help you will need is right here in abundance. You have approached a VERY knowledgeble group of guys here. Any info you need is just a keyboard entry away. I have personally found that most so called mechanics don't hold a candle compared to us on this forum, unless they worked on these bikes when they were first made or a few years after. I concur with Tim, Diesel and Pete. While the engine is out of the frame, just replace the stator, water pump seal & gaskets, and cam stuff. It will give you years of faithful service and peace of mind. All of these items can be found on the internet (Dennis Kirk, Old Bike Barn, dealers, etc). I have used the blue Electrex stator on two separate bikes, and have had no problems. They seem to have heavier windings and thicker epoxy coatings than the OEM units. Save you old stator (you never know when it may need to be rewound years from now). You can use the Yamaha mechanical seal which is a perfect fit, and about half the price of the Honda unit. Good luck and post any questions....we will do our best!!

Thanks for all the advice, I intend to use this forum as much as possible. I finally have all the parts together in one place, I degreased the frame and I am supprised at the good shape its in. Considering the bike will soon be 30 years old the frame and rims are great, my cosmetic problems are small crakes and scratches in the fairing, valve covers/clutch plate/ oil filter housing need referbishing, and a small dent in the tank. Can you get the original paint, decals and does anybody do a good job repairing the fibreglass fairing. Mechanically speaking I am not qiute sure. The last time it started was 15 years ago, One cold night it would not start, gauges fliked a few times and the fuel pump cut in but no start. I think it was just to cold ( -5 C ) and the bike needs a battery with a good charge. So it wasnt started since, a few years ago I pulled the bike apart and took the jug off one cylinder because I was worried about the fuel that the fuel pump sent to the cylinder during the failed start. Sure enough the top of the piston and exhaust port were all gued up with old hard fuel. So thats were I stand, the turbo empeller spins freeley and my exhaust has some rust where the slip- ons attach otherwise my concerns are the stator and other parts you mentioned. Can you order the gasket set from Honda or is there aftermarket, you mentioned the blue electrex stator who sells that, also I am alright mechanically with most stuff but I have never craked an engine casing, does anybody redo the entire engine/ turbo, can I just ship it out and get it back redone? Or is this stator replacement able to be accomplished by a amatuer mechanic? Thanks

Welcome, I just got done with a Stator and Mech. Seal job this past April. I'm not a mechanic, but was able to to find all the info I needed on the site to do the job by myself with relative ease.
Check out this post: List of Parts and Availability - Stator, Mech. Seal, Cam  it will answer most of your questions for parts you will need and has some other useful links and info.

Good luck and hope to hear your up and running soon!
