How to deal with old gas?
Reply Quote
So I was given a 88 ford escort wagon that has been sitting for about 9 months with a quarter tank of gas. I got it to start, but as I drove it started running a little rougher as I went along. never stalled or anything but made me a little worried. I got it home, and when I went to move it I struggled to start it. Im almost positive it was burning off the good gas on top, and now is just left with the crap on the bottom.

Do you think putting some gas in, along with a bottle of fuel injector cleaner would be good enough?

Good gas and Seafoam to clean the crap out of the tank.

Why do I own five CX/GL bikes? Ask an alcoholic why he drinks.

Ditto.  I had a chemistry professor tell me once that "the solution to pollution is dilution".

I typically carry 2 liters of extra gas for my motorcycle in a couple of liter gas bottles.  When I start to worry about their age, I just pour them into my truck's tank and replace the gas in the bottles with fresh gas.  Seems to work fine with no negatives noted.

Startron Fuel System additive/cleaner seems to be a more modern. updated version of Stale, which I have used for years.
Just started to use Startron, and am pleased with the results so far.
As the guys said, use with plenty of new fresh gas/ Dont forget Techron fuel system cleaner- I use once a year on spring startups to "jumpstart" the fuel sysytem

I usually carry an extra 1/2 gal. of fuel in case I meet a biker on the road who forgot and left their reserve on and ran out. I periodically swap it out also to keep it fresh.
