California to Nova Scotia - The Final Leg!
Reply Quote
Here I am again, folks, getting ready to get my GL650i the rest of the way home. I will get the local Honda shop (Diamond Motor Sports) to synch the carbs on Tuesday--there's a guy there I worked with back in 1983, so I think they are up to the task! Guess I'll go ahead and get them to adjust the valves, too, though I am looking forward to doing that myself in the future. Beyond that, I'll go to another shop for mounting two new tires...bought them through the MC Superstore and they have a recommended installer nearby. The front tire is still in excellent shape, but I bought a complete set before I saw the bike "in the flesh". I installed the new air filter yesterday, put new plugs in today.

I have found how to remove the trunk box (I have the extension kit) and got to the (thankfully complete) tool kit, though I have still not found the owner's manual. It appears the rear seat pivots up somehow, though I have not figured out how yet. At this moment, I'm downloading the shop manual and hope to find the answer there, but just in case one of you knows, the quick answer from a forum member is always easier!

I plan to leave Thursday or Friday and will take the weekend to get back to Nova Scotia. Will probably do some backroads and am tempted to go the longer route through Brattleboro, VT--liked stopping there last year on both the 78 CX in June and the Turbo in July.

More to come!

The rear seat bolts to the trunk extender and is removed together with it. At least that's the way mine was attached. Does the extender have two rails running around the bottom of the trunk?

Bad news, folks. After picking up the bike yesterday from the tire shop (new Spitfires), I pulled a real boner. Busy intersection. 4:30 p.m. Somehow, when I pulled out to cross the street, I missed the fact that a 2010 Ford Taurus was coming down the road from my right. The only thing I can figure is that my second check to the right was a quick glance, and perhaps the car was in the "blind spot" of my eye...you know, like the film they showed in Jr. High where you look about 45 degrees away from a brick wall image. Then, when you turn and look at it head on, a hole mysteriously appears.

Well, I missed it and slammed right into his left side--incredibly, his car fared much worse than my bike. The entire left side of the car is BAD, especially a deep dent on the left rear door that I guess must be where my body hit.

The truly sad thing is that my poor mother was right behind me in her car, having taken me to pick up the bike. No son wants his mother to see him get creamed!

So, looks like I have a seriously sprained, possibly fractured right ankle, a bunch of soft tissue damage to the gastrocnemius and soleus...maybe the achilles tendon, too, I don't know yet. I see the orthopedic surgeon Friday. Left tibia has a big goose egg and scrape on it, but it isn't broken.

So, my trip plans will obviously have to be altered. I'm guessing my travel insurance will pay to fly me home.

As for the bike, the front fairing took most of the damage...pretty much needs replacing, I think, as it is really scuffed up and broken in several places. The right foot peg is also bent back and won't go down all the way...I think that may be fairly easy to fix.

So, in the mean time, I'm just kicking back at my Mom's place, with lots of pain and definitely bound to crutches--can't put any weight on the right foot at all. The Percocet is barely taking the edge off the pain, but I shouldn't be such a crybaby.

If any of you have a lead on a front fairing for a 1983 GL650 Interstate, let me know. Despite what's happened, I still want to get the bike fixed up and continue my trip--though it might not be until the Fall.

Ciao for now...thus ends this post of what was to be my final leg home to Nova Scotia.

Very sorry to hear of the mishap, Dan.  I know what you say, sometimes even after I look twice, I still need to do it a third time to make sure.  And it is really a bummer this time of year.  Hang in there, you will make it thru this, we are all wishing you a fast recovery and another chance to get back on the horse.

I think fairing from a GL1100 will also match up to yours.  They may be a little easier to acquire.

That's bad. I hope you have a speedy recovery. I happen to know where there is a very nice fairing that still has attached to it a very nice GL650 I with only 18,000 miles on it. A muffler rusted through on a test ride last week and the engine feels stroner than before. So it will need a pair of HD mufflers and a seat cover. The current owner is still unable to find the parts to reassemble the saddlebags that his father removed prior to painting them. Can't ask him where he put them though, he died in December.

Hey Wing Dawg,

Thanks for that offer, but I think my bike is definitely worth repairing--don't know about the front fork yet, but it looks like I can slap a new fairing on, straighten out the right foot peg (which I now see is a good indicator of why my right ankle is so messed up), and I'll be good to go. At least I hope so.

On another note, it looks like I may not be back in NS when you are going through. Sorry that I'll miss you. If you do happen to get over to Windsor, be sure to have a beer at The Spitfire Arms. They also have great food.

Hey, thanks for the info--though you did just remind me of how perfect my original pipes WERE! Sadly, the right one is now scuffed up a bit. I think I'll just buy a replacement fairing, though the bike you mention is tempting because I could use it for parts. I wish it was in Eastern PA! Any idea how much it would go for? If I had my druthers, I'd probably have about ten bikes! Of course, my current pain level has me off of that idea. Hey, aren't you the fellow with the nice shop? I may have to get that way after all, one of these days.

Thanks, EVERYONE, for all the well wishes. I do appreciate it. I go see the orthopaedic surgeon tomorrow. I'm hoping it's just a bad sprain and the recovery time will be weeks, not months.

Yeah, the irony did not escape me!

I saw the Ortho surgeon yesterday; due to extreme swelling in my calf, he sent me back to the hospital for an ultrasound to make sure I didn't have a bloodclot--thankfully, I didn't. This morning, the swelling was noticeably down, so at least that part of my anatomy is getting better. Wish I could say the same for the pain!

Just finished getting an MRI this morning and the Ortho guy will go over it with me Monday morning before I fly home--either that afternoon or Tuesday. Despite my protestations about the cost (I'm a bit frugal), the insurance company is insisting that I fly first or business class so that my leg can stay elevated. I'm a trustee for the firefighter's benefits plan, so I am extra diligent about keeping costs down.

As my Mom said, it doesn't do any good, but I can't help spending a fair amount of time wishing I had just turned right that day instead of choosing to cross the street!

Gee wiz Dan, I just saw about your accident. Hope you heal up 100% and are more diligent in the future. I am sure you will find a fairing.

I had a near miss about 2 months ago at an intersection a block from my house . I stopped at the stop sign, looked both ways, and as I pulled out to cross the highway saw an oncoming F150 about to clobber me. I goosed my 650 and he braked and I just barely got out of his way. I now stop twice, and make triple sure no one is coming. Every time. And this was the same intersection my daughter got nailed at about 8 years ago. She looked both ways too, and didn't see the oncoming car. Luckily none of the injuries were life threatening. The mini van she was driving was totaled though. It really is a battlefield out there.

May the wind always be at your back and the sun overhead as you make your way down the ever winding, smoothly paved, traffic free road!

Thanks, Ron, I may look at your bike someday, but I'm still assessing the damage on mine--I really hate to junk it, because in many ways it is like a new bike. Having lived all of its life stored indoors in California and Nevada, it is remarkably free of rust and corrosion. It has a less-than-perfect repaint done by the previous (and only) owner...13K on the odometer when I picked it up...so I really want to salvage if at all possible. After crossing the country on it, I know I want to have a GL650i in my stable, so if I can't save this one, I'll remember yours. And thanks for the continuing offer of help! :-)

Sorry to hear of your predicament Dan, just read it. My Son in law has the complete fairing unit that he recently removed. He is located in Chester , VT and will be easy to deal with if you can get him to answer the phone, just leave a message and be sure to reference the fairing. His number is 802-376-5161

Thanks, Sweetheart, and you can better believe I am really ready to be home! Had this stupid crash not happened, I'd be rolling in early this evening and we could have taken a nice little sunset ride out past Oulton's farm and then gone for a Guinness & a Propellor at the Spitfire! Believe me, I am SERIOUSLY bummed that this is not the case! Love you too, darlin'. See you soon.

Do not waste energy being bummed, Danny...be incredibly thankful (as I am!) that you will live to ride another day! There are many rides, many sunsets, and many drinks at the Spitfire yet to come, my dear! Of course, you'll only have to wait until you recover to enjoy the first one on that list...as soon as I get you home we'll roll you down to the Spitfire for a sunset drink, okay? I'll be sure to rent a wheelchair with a cup-holder for your beer! : ) Peace, healing thoughts, and love to you,

Cool! Many of those signs are at the Spitfire Pub here in Windsor...but there are just as many that I hadn't seen before...thanks for the smile!

P.S. When Dan finally made it home, I wheeled him down to the Spitfire in his wheelchair for a Propeller Bitter!

Leesa, and Dan, I hope the best for both of you.  All of us are fortunate this didn't turn out worse.  And it's all the better to see the true nature of our members.  You two epitomize it.  A family.  Cheers!

p.s. my girlfriend is from Newfoundland.  I have a lot to learn!!

May the multitude of wheels in your head always control the two wheels between your legs.

Thanks, Joel! Yes, we're so incredibly fortunate this did NOT turn out worse! Dan's poor wounded body will heal (it's pretty nasty!)...and so will his heart, which is very out of sorts over the damage to his bike! Your girlfriend is from Newfoundland? You're a lucky man then...we East-Coast Canadian girls ROCK!!!
