To Slab or Not to Slab. Michigan trip.

I just got back a few hours ago from my week long motorcycle vacation. The plan was Milwaukee to Chicago to Kalamazoo to Durand and then back again. The rough trip was 800 miles and a question of slab or not to slab.
For the first 400 of the trip the answer was slab. We were killing birds hand over fist. I swear we met everyone we wanted to in the first few days pounding the slab. But on the way back the wind was a pain. Seemed like one step from cows flying around. Since 5 miles on the slab was a waste with the wind pushing me to the inside edge I gave up and took the low road. I ended up taking a parallel road from Durand to Lansing. Then a slow cruise through Lansing and out on M43 through Hastings by the Gilmore Auto Museum.
It was a nice quite ride and the last leg of that day we saw heards of deer and a few turkeys. Melody really enjoyed it and asked to take the final leg of our trip on the back roads. We ended up driving from Kalamazoo Michigan all the way to Chicago without touching a major highway. Once in chicago we realized traffic sucks so we took a break and visited a friend before pounding the slab and getting home. The tripmeter is sitting just short of 900 miles or maybe that was when we were in chicago.
The upside. It was a good trip. No major problems and we saw a lot of people.
The Down Side. I verified that I have a head gasket leaking oil from one of the corners. But it only leaks when sitting in traffic for longer than an hour not moving anywhere.
The Best find was a DN-01 in a honda dealer around south western Michigan. Probably the first and only time I will see one in person and be allowed to sit on it.
Well that's it. The slab may be quick but the memories are formed slab free.

In case you're wondering about the tractor. It's what happens when something is idle for several years.
The main reason I wanted to take a picture of it is because my bike was parked near a similar tree 20 feet away. When I pulled the bike out of there that tractor ran. Who knows what 7 more years in the elements would have done to my bike.

You know I don't have a clue. I'm not exactly a tractor guy but if asked I would help restore this one even if it is a money pit. But I did see it run when the wheel was first taken off.

Hi Stitch.....
Glad you and Melody had a great time (except for the train wait).
Yep the DN-01 is a pretty neat bike, but honestly you looked better on Dobie's Goldwing (See the Minnesota ride post)
I hope that Melody will want to do more long distance riding with you, heck I hope YOU want to do more long distance riding with you!!!
Glad to have you both back!!

The wheels are turning. Maybe next year we will do Denver in two weeks. Figure 3 days out 3 days back. I'm thinking it may be a bit far at the moment but if had a larger gas tank and better way to hold the bags I think things will be fine. By the time we got out there we would probably just hit up the post office and send our dirty laundry back home. I was half a step from doing that this trip since the last day we only had one change of cloths and nothing else. Didn't buy a single trinket the whole time.
That small trailer keeps becoming more and more of a though since we would need some camping gear.
Oh yeah. Dobbies bike is to big, the dn-01 is to low, David sent me an email for what could be the perfect bike but no cash to buy it. It's a Gl650 in silver without bags but small trunk with 13,000 miles on it for $1000. It's so tempting.
