I just got my first bike about 3 weeks ago, and it happens to be a 78' cx500. She is in great shape with only 11,000miles on her. The main thing that I need to fix right away is the rear suspension, it is totally shot. It still rides ok until I hit a bump or turn hard, then it just bobs up and down until I stop. Im looking for new suspension but am not sure the best way to go with it. Should I buy entirely new shocks or is there a way to rebuild them? If I do need new ones, are there universal shocks or do they need to be cx500 specific? Thank you guys for your responses in advance and Im very happy to have found this forum.
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.

Certainly Blindstitch will be along shortly, but many have used HD shocks, with pretty much direct bolt on, and they can be readily found on ebay for peanuts.

Thank you, and if anyone has any specific models of shocks that work for them that would be great. Money is also an issue, so maybe used would be great too.

The model doesn't matter so much as that it has the eyes on both ends. most of the ones you find cheap are 13". I just put on some kawasaki 11" ones and they worked just fine. Cost me $2.00.....shipping was $10.

Jscheiterlein, That would be great, Im not sure what condition they are in but it looks like the average price for used cx500 shocks on ebay is around $25. I could give you $25 plus whatever shipping will cost, if you think that is fair. That may be way off base as far as price goes but thats what it looks like they are going for on ebay. Just let me know what you think
Here is my cx500

Sounds good to me. If it helps a fellow rider get his wheels on the road I'm all for it.
Ill post some pics when I get home.
Pm me your address and we'll find out how much shipping will be. It shouldn't be too much though. If we have to do usps flat rate than it won't be more than $11 but UPS ground might be cheaper.
That's a nice looking bike! You're lucky to have such clean exhaust. Mine were all rotted out and it was tough to find a good set for a decent price!

Yeah, the bike is in great shape. The exhaust has a couple of leaks but it contained in the mufflers, the pipes are still in great shape. Im thinking about taking off the mufflers and trying to find baffles that will fit in the pipe, not sure if that is possible but I like the look of short straight pipes but dont want to piss off my neighbors. Would love to wrap them too. So far she doesnt ride perfect only because of the suspension but sounds great and cold starts like a brand new bike, dont even use the choke usually.

Heres a picture of mine. We both have pretty much the same bike.

I just love this shot

Heres the shocks. They're totally solid.

I like this set up. Its kind of a mix between a cafe racer and a bobber, which happen to be my two favorite styles of bikes. Very nice
