Work boots. Liars.

I've been in the search of some new work books. Nothing to expensive but not the cheapest either. Eventually I saw the Caterpillar Silverton 6 inch boots in black. Well I ordered them up from Sears and got a pretty good deal. $10 off plus a $5 off coupon with free shipping. End cost was $63 after tax and I was happy as hell since I was just at sears last week and they wanted $105 for the same boots.

Well they came today.
I don't know who thinks these are work boots because they aren't. Why the hell would caterpillar make the same type of boots with one being steel toe and the other not. I'm sure you can guess that I got the ones without steel toes which are required at work and in my general life.

Well I placed the order again. This time for the right ones that clearly say Steel toe. So hopefully I'll have better luck. Total cost was $5 more. The good thing is that when I went to the local sears to return them they were quick and easy about it. The only thing that sucked is they had the boots I wanted but they would have costed $15 more than I paid online shipped.

What do you think should be the definition of workboots and what kind do you wear?

Did you ask them to match the price?  Everything I've ever wanted on sale online from Sears, the local brick and mortar store would match if it wasn't already the same price or cheaper in store.

For me the term work boot has a loose definition since I'm just a student. Right now if I go out mudding or something in the Jeep I'll wear my Worx line of Red Wing. They're nice and broke in and steel toed. For riding or a need for nicer boots I have some Red Wing 971's that are quite sharp, waterproof, and steel toed. http://www.redwingshoes.com/ProductResults.aspx?Query=&ProductType=Motorcycle&SubType=Lace%20Up

For over 30 years all I have ever bought were Redwing work boots, oilproof and steel toed. Just shy of $200 nowadays, I work around concrete but never walk in it when wet, they are also insulated and I wear them year round here in Alaska and also when I ride. I might get two years out of a pair, I usually keep one pair for work and a decent set for casual or for riding.

Our company issued Redwings are waterproof and slip resistant....not steel toe.

My riding boots are lower grade from a local shoe mart, also waterproof and non-skid soles....not steel toe.

I don't associate 'work boot' with the steel toe option, but it obviously is a very important detail for those who need them on the job.

Cobram I didn't even think of asking for a price match. That would have been a good idea.

Well anyway soft toed boots doesn't fit my description as work boots.

In my version of work boots the list of characteristics is headed with steel toe being number one.  Followed by all the other fun stuff of oil resistant, slip resistant and so on as long as it's resistant.

I can honestly say that I haven't wore a pair of shoes since high school. Every shop, ware house and even restaurant I have worked in either required steel toe slip resistant boots or on a separate line encouraged the use.

My definition of work boots is something that is durable and rugged, and provide good traction on a large variety of surfaces.  Usually should be oil-resistant.  Waterproof not necessary, nor is steel-toe, those would just be "optionals."

Crocs. I always have them on when working in my garage. You can stand and walk all day in total comfort! My wife HATES them especially when I wear my usual gray tube socks. They are orange in color.

Why steel toed?

I've seen several folks specify steel toed boots for riding. I use a heavy leather boot, a no name that looks similar to the caterpillar boots. It never occurred to me that steel toes would offer much better protection.

Steeltoes because they are required at work.

I honestly haven't had a pair of shoes or soft toed anything but socks in 10 years.
