I had hoped to bring up the topic during the post-ride party, but it completely slipped my mind.
What do we want HTTA-MN to be?
At a minimum, I think I'd like to see a website, with an easy-to-remember domain like "HTTA-MN.org", where we can post upcoming events, ride reports, photos, and the like. It would include links to this Forum, the Facebook group, and maybe some technical reference pages if anyone's ambitious. It would give us a simple point of contact to publish on calling cards, Craigslist event notices, etc.
Do we have any website gurus in the local crowd? (Click the "WWW" button below to see the limits of my paltry skills.) I could possibly host it, if my USFamily account will allow the redirect.
I would like to have some constructive discussion of the logo, too. What I've put together is just preliminary. I imagine those with marketing or graphic arts experience would have ideas to make it more legible, reproducible, etc. It could even take a completely different form. Eventually, I'd like to have some patches made, if I can find a good rate.
And I still need to pare down the contact list. It currently includes every forum member that I could find with a Minnesota connection (including many who are probably inactive), plus all those who responded to the CL notices from the last couple Spring Rides. About half of them I can only email through the forum, which means individual messages, not mass distribution. It's so unwieldy that I never got the email notice out for SR'10. For months, I've been intending to send out an "opt-in" request." Guess I need to get on that.
Comments? Ideas?
Thanks,
R

The logo stuff isn't hard at all if you know what you want.
As for a website what about google groups. This is the local vintage moto groups website. http://www.milvinmoto.com/
It's an ok example and then everything else that goes on happens inside the google group. http://groups.google.com/group/MilVinMoto?lnk=gschg
I'm also a fan of the facebook stuff but it doesn't have as many options as I would like.

The Ski Patrol uses Google Groups to broadcast our messages and they seem to work pretty well. You can respond individually or to the group. Originally I was thinking all we needed was our own little forum section, just like the buying and selling section or the traveling with friends and family section but I guess that wouldn't handle the email function very well.
Whatever you do, I hope it will facilitate some more rides. I went on a nice once from maple grove, down south a little bit, then over to Delano, up the crow river then down Dayton river road and Easy Diamond lake road. It was about 70 miles and a perfect evening ride.

I have a HTTA blog site that I do not know how to use. If you will refrain from trying to separate your local group from the national group, I will hand the reins over to someone who knows how to develop it. I am paying nothing for the server space. I do pay go-daddy around $9.00 per year, which I will continue to do. I do not intend to replace this site, just back it up as a communications tool.
Any takers? step right up

I wonder what the value is of separating to a different site? I think contact between MN folks and the rest of us "normal" people will be reduced. Although I personally do not pay much attention to MN rally plans and activities because they are a ways away, the posts certainly don't "get in the way". And if someone from another area was heading there, they would be more likely to know about an event if it was still discussed here?

I'm not talking about a separate forum. I'm not talking about separating at all.
It'd just be nice to have a page with a simple URL for the local group. So instead of referring contacts to http://choppercharles.com/cs/forums/167191/ShowPost.aspx, we could send them to www.htta-mn.org. They would find a prominent link to the forum there.
There's also the issue of threads falling down the list on the forum. If we put event info on an external site, it would be easy to find, and could certainly include a link to an event discussion thread on the forum.
I'm looking to supplement, not supplant.

That's an interesting possibility. It would need to be discussed with those who understand this stuff better than I do.

R, I have been following the posts from all the Mn folks & I enjoy them. I don't know if I will be that far west or north anytime soon but I enjoy reading about you alls activities and in some small way it makes me feel good to see a group as active as yours. I hope you all will stick around on this site, I'm just lazy and only spend so much time on the computer. It is so easy for me to check on you guys at the same time I check out eastern group. Heck, I would like to get back out to Oregon and it looks like they may wind up with a group on here. That's my 2 cents. Gene

Randall, I am agreeing with Gene. I don't really see a great need for a seperate web site, especially since you already started a facebook page.

At one time there were 3-4 sites going. One site was easier to upload and host photos with a text option. Most stayed true to the main forum but when the forum went down, there was a standby. Sometimes a rapid paced forum is unnerving to a noob. We gleaned some gems from the minor boards. The Yamaha seal is one that stands out. But it is time consuming to check several boards.

Have you seen the URL for the facebook page?

It's OK if you can embed a link, but who's gonna remember that gibberish? It's like the old-time email addresses on CompUSA.
I'm not looking to make a new forum, or a blog, or anything of the sort. I'd just like a site with a simple URL where we can post info and links - an intuitive first point of contact.

I see, you could do what I did on the Fossil's blog. To simplify the link I registered "www.fossilapostles.com" on go-daddy then by following their instructions it invisibly routes everyone that types that in to the free blog site which actually has a long, unwielding URL which no one, myself included, has to know. Facebook was just a fad for kids at the time I did this but I could have pointed it to a Facebook page instead. Matter of fact, I'm thinking of abandoning the blog site for facebook because it is so hard to find your way around in the blog.
The biggest problem in my mind with Facebook is that you have to become a Facebook member to look around. Thus far I have resisted doing that but with all my daughters with a page and you, etc, I should break down and join.

Actually, I'm getting kind of sick of Facebook. I've thought about dumping it (again.)
I've tried to find out whether I can do a domain redirect to my USFamily space, but I couldn't find it in their published literature. I'll need to contact them.

I'd suggest waiting to see what can be done with the new forum. Ideally in the Traveling friends section, there should be subheadings for the various geological areas to discuss and organize rides, get togethers and shop talks in addition to a general traveling friends section for those general needs and for announcing more major rallies.
There is nothing wrong with the name choppercharles and the forum has had a home here for several years, but another name such as cxglclub.org would allow for adding prefixes such as mn-wi.cxglclub.org. But the same effect could be accomplished with territorial subheading sections.
Over at http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/index.php and about 3/4 or more down the page they have regional chapters and then state chapters under that subheading. They use vbulletin.com.
I agree with Gene that it is fun and interesting to see what others are doing.
I already checked out the htta.org name and it is taken.
