Engine noise from front of bike??
|
|

So been a while since I posted anything at all, been riding the bike to and from work alot and lately i noticed a ticking type noise from the front of my 79 cx500. Sounds kinda like its from behind the fan area and is driving me nuts now! bike only has 12K mi on it so not sure where to start with it... Kinda leaning towards the cam chain and yes i have viewed the cam chain on the quick links just so hard to see where the bolt head of the worn out cam chain is at. Any one got any ideas? I dont want to blow up the bike and would love to fix what is going on with this thing. And if it is the cam chain problem, where on earth could i find one of these? I would assume E-bay but wouldn't mind somewhere else to get one that is not used (if such a thing even exists for these older bikes)

If your bike only has 12k on it then you shouldn't have a worn cam chain. Maybe a broken tensioner but I kind of doubt that too. Look at the quick reference thread about cam chain dental mirror inspection. If you don't see anything that means it's good and you're going nuts.
I had a similar noise coming from my fan or what I though but it didn't change much after I changed it.

Well the cam chain is near the back, by the water pump. Could be your fan cracking at the hub. When mine was going it would rattle at idle and low RPMs, and disappear as RPMs increased.
Other thought is maybe the tach drive?

I had an odd noise like that on my bike. Turned out the tach cable was loose in the back of the tach. The noise went away oneday when the tach quit working. I looked and the cable had come undone. The one thing I didn't go back and check when I did the transplant.

Ok so i have yet to pull the bike apart and start taking things off of it to find this noise, but seams to be coming from the fan area. Its to loud to find with out pulling the fan off and just starting the bike to see what it sounds like without it on. But ty for the fast replies, as for the noise its a loud thumping / clunking type that dose not go away with higher rpm or speed. I shall remove the fan and figure it out while at work tomorrow since ill have all my tools and nothing to do (yay for working on the 4th of july in a a auto repair shop) then ill do the other little things i need to do to the bike while i already have it torn apart =)
