Things that cause accidents

Lately I have seen a lot of conversations in other places about drivers and cell phones. Yeah I agree they are a problem in the wrong hands.
But what else shouldn't people be doing when driving.
I was waiting at an intersection today as a woman inched forward in the opposite turning lane. My plan was to go straight. Well this incher was going to town on not only her cell phone but the bomb pop in her second hand. I don't know about you but a Popsicle in one hand and a cell phone in the other didn't make me want to go first when the light turned green.
Well I got lucky and a truck pulled up in the lane next to me. I'm sure that chick wasn't looking at me since she was already halfway out in the road on a red light.
So what do you guys think people shouldn't do while driving?

Reading the paper, watching TV, texting (of course), shaving, putting on makeup, doing their hair, looking for a CD on the floor, eating a whopper, writing emails on the blackberry... the list goes on. I have seen all these behaviors being exhibited by drivers while underway.
May the wind always be at your back and the sun overhead as you make your way down the ever winding, smoothly paved, traffic free road!

I used to wait for my G/F after work in a downtown 2nd floor cafe where you could watch the cars/pedestrians pass by.
I was mortified to see a taxi driver playing an electronic keyboard while driving !!!!!!
Here in Ontario mobile phones and texting etc while driving is illegal.
But even driving home from work today i spotted at least 4 A%#holes/violaters !!!!!
Sorry had to get it off my chest

You know I was at a thrift shop about a month ago and found a 12volt coffee pot. I almost bought it for the laugh.
If you look at the lines you will notice this is a 10 cup coffee maker. WTF

I don't care what people do while driving! I care how they drive.
All those things can be distractions, and if you cannot drive properly while doing it, then don't. No need to add more laws when pulling them over for lane discipline, speeding, running a red light, or reckless driving will do the trick. :)
EDIT: Oh, and that toaster is awesome, regardless of the obvious issues hah!

People tend to drive on auto-pilot nowadays, especially when they're taking a well-known route they use often.
I'll swear half the people I see on the highway have nothing better to do than talk about the klatest news about Marge's grandbaby than pay an inkling of attention to anything but the bumper directly in front of them.
Talking/texting while driving should be banned on a Federal level, the only reason laws on this don't get anywhere is because the lawmakers are just as ad if not worse about doing it.

I don't know about anywhere else, but here in my little part of the world it doesn't really matter what is illegal on the road because our law enforcement doesn't do much of anything about it. I have been on I 75 doing 75 mph and been passed by a state trooper or sheriffs patrol on more than one occasion. Most of the time they are driving 80 or 85 mph. On the same stretch of highway there are three or four places the cops like to sit and watch traffic. Unfortunately that's all they do. I have seen people drive through there texting, speeding or driving like idiots in general and the cops just sit there. It's good to know my tax dollars are hard at work. Especially here in Michigan where all most everyday I hear or read about someone complaining that the state has a huge deficit. How about giving out some speeding tickets or moving violations. Seems like a good source of income to me. Sorry about the rant, but it really irritates me.

Definately texting and any cell phone use should be illeagle with a huge fine if the vehical is in motion.
Should be a federal / national law !!
That DVD thing that can be viewed by the driver is also insane !!!
Man, I hate modern technology on the roadways !!
Should take away air bags, big trucks and SUV's also !
If everyone had something like a little ford fiesta or fusion, maybe they wouldnt be so careless and drive like they are in a bumper car battle where the biggest and most aggressive wins !!!!

My strangest observation is at an intersection. The lady in the lane next to me (I'm in the left turn lane, she's in the straight ahead lane), is waiting for the red light to turn.
She holds the cell phone between her ear and her shouldert and with her right hand applies deordant to her left armpit..
I'm 6 feet from the lady but she has yet to see me or anybody else that's watching her.. If she winds up in the emergency room, at least she'll smell well..

I'm driving in a 2010 Tundra, a young woman in a small econo car, on a back road
that sees a lot of traffic, with a speed limit of 35 MPH comes around a rather gentel curve
mostly in my lane. I move over, blow the horn, she puts down her PDA device long
enough to flip me off. It's only a 2 lane road, I had to leave it to keep from killing her
(she was doing about 60 MPH) and it's mt fault? Reminds me of the story of the old
gentelman on an elevator who removes his hat when 2 women get on, the door closes
and the women begin cussing about another day at the office, the bastards they have
for a boyfriend ect.. the old gentelman puts his hat back on, never said a word to the
women. I guess it's the world our "entitlement" mentality built for us.

I don't text, but I do talk on my cell. My other half drives a truck and the way his schedule works, sometimes it's the only time he's available to talk when he's going outon the road. I still signal, turn the wheel with my hand and not my knee, etc.
What I think is a bigger hazard are the entitled people. The women who drive huge SUVs when they have a family consisting of themselves, one kid, and a husband- who don't tow, pull, or haul anything.... but like to *sit up higher*, and wanted that huge SUV because if in an accident *at least they'll be safe*- and then consequently feel they can/ should change lanes without signaling or looking- and it doesn't matter what car they run off the road in the process. Or the people who are in another vehicle but don't want to be behind anybody so they jump in front of you, with hardly any room to spare and then they don't want to even drive at the speed limit, so they spend the next 5 miles with a line of traffic building as they all go from the speed limit or a little over, to 5-10 miles below the posted limit. I don't know about where you guys are at, but then there's people who meander along, and then brake for no reason..... but wait, they're turning!
There are so many people who drive like crap WITHOUT technological distractions- who don't look, don't care... banning cell phones won't solve the issues. Out here, a motorcyclist was killed a couple of years ago because the lady that hit him was PAINTING HER NAILS!
.....hmmmm.... I think I should stop, because looking back it seems as if one of my *hot buttons* was pushed! LOL

I liked the lady in the SUV that had to put her cell phone down on the dashboard to turn around and help the kids in the back change the DVD they were watching in one of the overhead players - all at 75 mph. She kept doing this and drifted over into my lane not once, not twice, but three times.
I also think what's being talked about might influence attention to the road. If a worker is discussing directions to a place, or conducting business it might be a bit different than just gabbing.
Regardless, the way people drive around here if I absolutely have to use my cell phone while driving I get way over to the right and keep it short and to the point. If someone wants to talk I tell them I'm driving and I'll call them back as soon as I can find a parking lot. This tends to put a few people in shock but I've been driving since I was 6 (farm boy) and have never been in an accident that was my fault so far.

Blow jobs.
Two summers ago, I'm driving home from vacation, on a straight as an arrow prairie 2 lane highway, where you can see for miles.
Mid august, grass in the ditches was pretty tall.
anyway, oncoming is a late 80's ford LTD. It's about 1/2 mile away, right wheel dips in the shoulder, driver overcorrects, shoots out into my lane, over corrects again and spins a one eighty and flies backwards into the ditch at about 60 mph.
I couldn't see the car from the road because of the grass, but I stop the van and hustle across the highway down into the ditch, fearing the worst.
I come up on the car, the driver was obviously shaken, and his passenger was embarassingly putting back on her bra and shirt.
He was stuck, I asked if they had a cell phone, they said yes, so I turned and walked away.

I think a lot of blame goes to automatic transmissions.
I was thinking about this a couple weeks ago when I noticed a driver lounging in his half-reclined seat chatting on the phone. Without the need to clutch and shift, it's too easy to disconnect from the task of driving (in addition to having a hand free.)

Bicycles can be directly traced to traffic incidents also.

I find short shorts and halter tops VERY distracting, find it difficult to maintain focus on where the hell I am going. Almost rearended a car the other day.
And then if "pedestrians" are wearing them, well
the distracting is even greater. :>)

this is a subject that just gets my blood boiling... i dont even want to get into it cause i could rant for days on this one...
I would agree though that manual transmissions are a lot better at forcing people to have to actually drive the vehicle... and every car should have one... in my opinion- if you can't drive a manual car then you shouldnt be driving an automatic and eating at the same time either

Manual: Better gas millage. (generally there probably is an exception out there in the world) Focused on driving. Can push start the car. more control of the car EASIER TO FIX!!!! (manual transmissions are cake to fix compared to automatic) Other stuff I can't remember since I am sleepy...
Automatic: I don't have to do anything ... that's about it...
Oh easier to drive in hilly cities. but that is just a practice problem

Negligible, and many CVT automatics actually get better mileage.
When you drive stick all the time, it's second nature, drivers can get just as distracted.
Not anymore, many modern engine management systems will not allow push starts. On some higher end cars, you can cause 1000's of $$$ in damage if you try and push start them.
Depends on the car/driver. On many stick shifts the computer will override you if you try and do something "interesting" that it deems could harm the machinery. I may be wrong, but I think they program this feature to shut off the day after the warranty expires, then the computer will let you do anything that might break OEM only parts.
EASIER TO FIX!!!! (manual transmissions are cake to fix compared to automatic)
|
|
Most slush box fixes are relatively easy, most have a valve body that can be swapped out as a unit by removing a couple bolts. Durability there's no comparison, a manual will usually go 10X or more longer than a stick before you have to open the box. Both types are usually best replaced as a unit anyway, cheaper and less white hairs. Some clutches can be a real bitch, and are a wear item, an ultra fast wear item depending on who's behind the wheel.
Oh easier to drive in hilly cities. but that is just a practice problem
|
|
City driving is a royal PITA with a stick shift. Hills, depending on the car and the hills you can burn out a clutch in no time, especially in an underpowered and loaded vehicle. Then there's the fun if the emergency brake doesn't work or the street is slick at the top of a 75 degree incline with a stop light at the top, add wet cobblestones or an oil slick for even more driving enjoyment.
One big advantage you missed, PRICE, at least around here. If an appliance car sells for $6000 used, if it's a stick, it'll probably go for $3500. Sportier and higher end cars seem to be the opposite, some sticks commanding twice what the slush boxes get.
I always go out of my way to teach anyone who's learning to drive to start on a stick, it's like riding a bicycle after that. Teaching them after they've acquired a lifetime of bad habits from driving an automatic only is a fools errand.
1978 CX500 - I live on a one-way street that's also a dead end. I'm not sure how I got here, or how I'm going to get out. Four wheels move the body; Two wheels move the Soul.

In my city of Grand Rapids. Some developer renovates an old building and turns it into tax free expensive condos. The building is right downtown where two expressways merge together. Whats unique about this condo site is the developer put a huge olympic size pool on top the building. The exit ramp leaving 131 south to enter to 196 west is eye level to that pool. On two seperate occassions already two semi trucks have driven off the exit and dropped three stories down.
On the evening news the developer was saying that the accidents have nothing to do with the swimming pool. I just grinned. I wish I had pics to share but I am afraid I might end up on the evening news. lol

What should be banned while driving? Stupidity. That's the main cause.
Texting? Stupid. painting your nails/doing makeup? Stupid watching a dvd? Stupid. reading a book? Stupid. (I flipped off a preacher once for doing that while driving 45 on a packed highway containing lots of snow/ice) Talking on the phone, smoking, eating a burger, and picking your nose all at the same time? Stupid. Being stupid? Stupid.
That's what causes most careless accidents.
Oh, and I'll agree on the stick thing. Sure it'll become 2nd nature anyway, but it leaves less hands/feet free to do other stupid crap.

Seen here in Albuquerque just today, a woman breast feeding her baby while driving down the road. Probably not a wise thing to do.

I just got hit off my bike on the weekend from a driver on their cell phone. No signal, no blind check. The driver missed their turn, so quickly tried to change lanes and sadly I was just passing on the left and the turn they wanted was on the left.
Gonna cost me over 500 dollars to fix the only 4 month old bike up. =( And I had to wait 3 hours in emergency for stitches and a tonne of raw road rash to be cleansed.
Lesson learned - Always wear your gear... I was an idiot...
Yes the law in Canada says no cell phones but its next to impossible to enforce, so its next to impossible to expect people to follow it even though it's proven to be as lethal as a person driving over the legal BAC limit.

Good thing you're ok though. Was the driver cited for cell phone use?

So far just this year have had four idiot encounters. Being awake and untrusting kept me upright. The most recent was a lady chowing down on a jelly doughnut. At 75 mph she almost choked when she saw me screaming at her.

I've had terrible luck with people in Escalades, usually white ones
last summer one hit me on my Buell at about 60 MPH, they were coming off the off-ramp and went over 2 lines into the middle with no signal, my right handle-bar put a big scrape in their paint and I just recovered the bike in the next lane over and flew away to be tagged of a police officer at the top of the hill; he didn't buy my story because he didn't see it and there were three semis on the hill between where it happened in a valley and his position
Earlier this summer some guy in another white Escalade between Milwaukee and Madison in heavy traffic decided he was entitled to be in my lane, where the front half of my car was located. It was very heavy traffic near construction and we were only doing maybe 45 mph. He just went to come right over, and I didn't slow down because there was a guy in a black car behind me who was already honking his horn and I'm sure he would have rear-ended me if I made a sudden speed change. So this Escalade is literally over the line with the wheel and I'm riding far-left in the lane, forced to start letting the car coast down speed to avoid people now covering all 3 of my sides not against a ditch. A few miles later the left lane was stopped and the right was moving, I had moved over and the Escalade decided he wanted to come over once again. I couldn't go left, and I was next to him again but there was thankfully an on-ramp to the right and pavement I could slide over onto. I floored it and my lil Grand Am spit forward and I managed to get up along the edge of the ramp on the right and stay on the road. When the lanes opened up I got in the left quick and then speed-matched a van, blocking the Escalade to piss him off and ignoring his rapid angry honks. His response was at the next on-ramp to the right to gun around the van using the ramp and shoulder and get in front, I saw him doing this and dropped back, took the right lane, went 3-4 cars back and purposefully maintained a thick blocker between us. Very shortly he decided it would be easier to be an asshole to the people in front and continued working forward in now loose traffic doing 70+ anyway literally forcing people to yield or take a hit. If this guy had messed around with me on a motorcycle, I probably would have put something through his windshield. Gotten ahead and thrown a nut or something back, the bastard deserves some serious retribution for driving like that.

Thorivola.....
When I'm in my car (OK, it's kind of a SUV- Pontiac Torrent... but it's a far cry from the trucks I've had, so I still call it a car) and I have no passengers..... if there is someone who is intentionally driving like a jerk (I'd use a different word if not on such a nice forum...) I usually won't move- much. I'll move enough so when the officer gets the stories, there are witnesses and I can truthfully claim that I tried to avoid the accident .... but I won't be bullied. I learned to drive in Chicago and the SW suburbs, and I've had way too many people move into my lane way too fast and the day I tried to avoid the other car I was almost put into a cement wall. Now I maintain and hit the horn, if they hit me it'll be a bad day for both of us. That's only in my car though. (and that's the reason for the previous rant about the *entitled people*)
On my bike I'm more like a rabbit- very cautious and avoid EVERYTHING! LOL Too many people driving like crap and not checking mirrors, turning their heads to check blindspots, etc.
Ugh... This should be a post I just avoid, cause I get so irritated by people who can't safely enter a lane, use their signal, etc..... I would never make it as a traffic cop. :-/

Just saw it today when leaving the hospital - guy talking on two cell phones at the same time thus he must have been steering with his knee.
Best I could figure it was some sort of conference call, held hold one close and the other away from his other ear a bit then changed over from time to time as if relaying info from one person to another.
What gets me is around here the police will arrest you, impound your car and you're faced with about $10,000 worth of expenses if you get a DUI, however using cell phones while driving - which have been proven by more than one study to be even more dangerous than the average "slightly over the limit driver - is fine and dandy with the legislators that make the laws.
