Make sure your email addresses associated with your login is valid and that your spam filters are turned off. The forum will be moving soon, and when it does the usernames will be preserved, but the passwords cannot be recovered. So when you log into the new system, you'll have to use the "I forgot my password" link to generate a new password, which is then sent to the email address on file.

This is because of differences encrypting and storing passwords between the two forum software packages.

The transition will be happening some time within the next two weeks. I'll keep you all posted.

Charles.

Yes. Charles will move the current "choppercharles.com" domain name so that it points at the new location.

Also, be aware that there will at some point be a cut-off where everything posted after that cut-off point will be lost.  I'm sure it will not be very much, but it's good to know that up front so you don't think it's a Software Bug.  It's just that a copy of this data will be relocated to the new location, and after that copy is done then we will enter a hopefully short period of data loss. -- If that makes sense.

Charles, If you can, make sure to lock down all ability to post on this old software once you make the Domain Change to redirect "choppercharles.com".  It will take a bit for the change to propagate to the DNS servers of the world, and some computers will cache the old IP for a little while.  If this happens to any of you guys and you grow impatient you can try the following on a windows PC: Start, Run, Type "cmd" and press enter key, in the black window Type "ipconfig /flushdns" (no quotes) and press enter key... then refresh the browser.  This could work in a certain circumstance, but just waiting will do it too.

If I think of any other potential "Gotchas" I'll post them.

Whow... stop right there.  Having the link will bring you to the site, but the "I forgot my password" process for entering a new password into the site will send YOU an email with a link to verify your identity via your email address. This means that if you don't get the email, you don't get access... Big BUT here... even if you don't get the emails from this old site, won't meant that you will not get the emails from the "new site". The reason that your emails are not coming through is either because the email address in your profile here is incorrect or because the server this site is on has been "Black Listed" in spam filters and is therefore being blocked by your email service provider. -- The "new site" will be with a new hosting provider, meaning it will be running from a whole different set of servers from a new and improved hosting company which should not be blocked or black listed.  So you should get emails from the "new site".

So, double check your email addresses now.  If it's right then you are probably just fine and you will start getting the emails after the switch.

I'm pretty sure that comcast has this site's server black listed, but the new site should be fine because they are dedicated for forums.

Charles, you might want to create a temporary forum category/topic on the new site that can be posted to by anyone, even if they are not logged in, so that an admin can react to someone having trouble with accessing their old account. It could get spammy down the road, but would probably be fine for a month or so. Then you can just remove/delete it later on. This technique has worked pretty slick for me in the past.

That's good. It'll all be fine.

I just want to make sure that everyone has some idea of what to expect and where the hiccups might arise if they do.  Otherwise it's all easy to instantly get mad and frustrated by a change like this.  The good news is that functionally, it's the same... the better news is that everything works and there are some fun new things too.

Good to know this is happening finally. I haven't been doing much posting on issues because I thought we were going to loose all the posts and info on here any day now.
Is there a way we can be notified a day in advance? That way we can turn off the spam filters without them being off for a couple weeks. By the way, You are referring to the filter in the browser right?
You may want to explain to those that don't know, how to do it.

SiriousBlackOp, I thank you for stepping up and helping Charles with this transfer. Maybe I'm reading between the lines, but it seems that your right in the middle of it all.
THANK YOU TO BOTH YOU AND CHARLES FOR DOING THIS. AND TO ALL OF YOU THAT PITCHED IN TO HELP FUND IT!

This is 95% Charles.

I've offered up my knowledge and experience to help him make the decision, and once it was made and the plans were pretty well set... well... I've mostly started playing "PR Guy" to help all of you understand the transition.  As a software developer, that's part of my daily job anyway. lol.  I would love to jump in and get my hands dirty here, but it's Charles' website and I think he has it handled just fine.

As for the advance warning, that's a really good question. I believe the software company that created the new forum software will be doing the actual data migration for us (much better than the two of us stumbling through the database trying to manually match things up), so I'm not certain of the details on how that process will get kicked off and it's probably a question best answered by Charles.

The spam filters we are talking about are the email filters that filter out all of the junk email.  You can either turn it off if you know how, or during the transition just keep an eye on your Junk/Spam folder or listing for something that looks like it's from the forum. I hope this will not be an issue for anyone.  The reason our current server is often times blocked is because it is a shared server (probably has 100 other websites) for general hosting and all it takes is one of those other people to be a spam emailer and the whole server gets black listed.  This shouldn't be a problem moving forward because we are moving to a server system that only hosts other forums like ours.

If you REALLY want to change your name once we have made the transition to the new system, you can send Charles or another admin a Private Message (PM) in the new software and they can change it for you.

The downside to that is that it will take people a while to recognize you as the Poster Formally Known As "gary50".

SBO,
Well, the PR role and information disemination is just as important as the switch itself. Thanks again for your interest and knowledge in keeping us informed. This is where a group effort sometimes is needed to help out.

Although it's true as you say; "it's his site", the donations recieved lend it more towards being felt by the donors to be a community supported site. I mention this, only because of how another group supported forum that I was on had its plug pulled by one of its founders/owners and he sense of ownership that the members expressed afterwards. Yearly donatons for site exenses should also be allowed to insure the necessary upgrades and so forth.

A new domain name would also make it easier for charles to pass the site and forum on IF/When in the future he loses interest, AND it would more clearly direct people to the CX/GL' themselves. But there are reasons to keep the domain name also, mostly for familiararity.

I guess if it is still unreliable or undesireable the members can start a commmunity supported forum of their own, but from the way it sounds, this move should clear things up.

SBO, can you answer the question that the one member had as to which software is going to be used. That seems privado also perhaps to keep from considering objections or alternative suggestions and to make things happen promptly.

At this point changing the name wouldn't help any because we already spammed the internet. Try doing a search and not find us. It's getting pretty hard.

The old URLs will all be bad anyway once the Domain Name is moved to the new software. This is all going bye-bye.

The good news is that all of this data will be located in the new forum site. The Search there will work, And search engines like Google figure it all out.

The downside, links pointed to here from other forums will start failing. This would have happened no matter what decision had been made since even the newest version of this site's software would have required a change of URLs. So there wasn't any hope for this point.

That happened a month or so ago anyway, links inside threads started bringing up error pages even though they were correct.  Going to the linked page manually, and re-copying the url somehow made them work again.
If you have posts with links to threads from this site (the unofficial FAQ as kept by 'stich comes to mind), looks like the posts are going to have to be searched and the new links manually copied over the dead ones.

Sounds like it's worth it though, as you said, it wasn't a matter of "if" but a matter of "when" the scat would hit the blades irregardless of what was or wasn't done.

Well the good thing with the unofficial FAQ is that Shep was ever so courteous to let me house all the crap I saw fit over at his site. All the words were copied, pictures downloaded and housed on my photobucket account along with recreating the post.

Wow, its really going to happen.  I wonder what color the walls are going to be,  And the fonts too?

And maybe we'll get a better logo instead of that lined ball at the top of the page.

I just hope that this site hasn't already moved and somehow I am stuck here in this big empty forum.

#1 Shut off the Motorcycle.

#2 Open the garage and get some fresh air...

Had that happen to me in a plane that had a manifold leak once:

Yep, were still here! Not there yet. Charles said he has the new site up and running, but needs to transfer all the data over to it still.

Well I'm in but got a weird password.

Saved it as cut and paste and stuck it on my desktop labeled "Password".

How do I change my password back, or do I need to?

So, this is the new place.

Seems a lot bigger than the old place. Furniture seems the same.

Is it just me, or does anyone else smell fresh paint and carpeting??

Nope not the new place. There was a rumor but I guess it's going to be even more sparkly.

This must be the new place, I got an email giving me my new password and I got here by following the info in the email.

Even changed my password back to the old one by following the link provided.

I'm going out for a smoke and to see if  Dorothy is out there with her red shoes.

When I come back in I just know everything will be OK or..  different... or the same..or....

WOW is it 2:00 AM already, where does the day go.

Sorry, this is not the new place yet.  Trust me when I say you will KNOW it is new when you see it. Everything will be bolder, sharper, cleaner and yes the globe thingy at the top will be gone.

Not sure why you got that email for here.

I'm just happy I got my email working.  For some reason it did not like my comcast email... Think it was the underscore.
