Ok what the hell. The other one disappeared.
Several people have thought of making similar type bikes. Only a few have made a complete bike.

I'll be building one on a GL500 over the next several years.
Currently, I'm working on a mock-up of the mono-shock (the stock unit was missing from the basket), to measure the travel range of the drive shaft u-joint. Then I'll be able to select a shock that gives me the greatest amount of suspension travel.

Cool, any one got pics of their Adventure Cycle builds... I am in need of some inspiration to show my daughter... I think the CX would make a good canidate for a dual sport cross over.... (mostly it will be a street pounder with occasional dirt trail).

I didn't want to get off... and as far as giving it back... yea that was hard to do as well... but it made me want an adventure bike so much more... that now I want to build one... and since I have the 500 sitting here... my brain started ticking overtime. but I might start thinking about getting an XR650 or an old XL350

I'd def lean towards the xr650. Lots of power good reliable bike and of course customizable. Not to say the 350 isn't but a 650 will move when needed.

the only reason for wanting the 350... I had a 78 and 79 XL350 that I restored as a kid... and never got the chance to ride them.

Is The Buzzard close enough? I haven't hauled too much on it, but it works on the dirt roads around here...

I have seen this bike in a few other forums... I don't remember if I saw your build thread or not... care to tell us a little about the bike... I am very interested in the suspension mods, seat hight, and any thing else you had to do to get it off-road-able. How capable of a trail bike is it... I am not looking to make a motocross bike, just want to be able to take long jaunts a crossed back mountain roads and such.

Ahhh, lez see...
CX650C front end, swapped the headtube to a 500 frame. 10 weight oil. Yamaha TT500 rear shocks. Swingarm is still happy with 14" eye to eye. 78 rear wheel, 18". Fenders are both generic UFO plastic, made a bracket for the front. Mac 2 into 1, custom 2" pipe from an auto shop, Jardine 4x20" can from ebay. I now have standard footpegs, extended center and side stands, and an Acewell speedometer. Tires are now Shinko 705s, and I really like them. The seat is the cool part. Suzuki RM125 from mid 80s. It fits almost perfectly. I added a new bracket and posts to the frame, but it looks original.
I'm 5'9", and the seat is fine. I started on a KLR650, so I can't stand low cruisers. My heels are usually on the ground at lights.
The suspension feels old and soft, and really is nothing to gush about. I'll cross ditches slowly and hop off a curb, but that's about it.
If you really want a trailie, buy a DRZ400S and be happy. Wicked good performance there.
This was mostly a project for a commuter and dirt road bike that I would not care about dropping.
The side panels are cool, but the left side needs Dzus fasteners sometime.
I may make spoked wheels front and back, we'll see what the urges are in a year. I'll never sell it because of the frame mods.

Thanks for the info.. Not looking for a hardcore dirt bike... what you ended up doing is exactly what I was wanting to do.. but my daughter decided to take this project in a different direction... The best way to describe it is Retro-Stock. The bike will have custom paint, and be lowered 2" front and rear.. other than that, every thing will be put back to stock configuration, as clsoe to factory as we can get it.
see father daughter build.
