Lightning [li] Need stator for my 1978
Reply Quote
I am looking for a stator (CDI version) that I can rewind (as a project) the coils and test  (using the '82 parts bike housing and driven with an electric motor) before I tear into Maggie and replace. Anyone have a stator lying around that they would want to part with? email me at my address ragbrian at gmail dot com and let me know what you have (especially during the transition period for this board).

After a nice 100 mile ride yesterday, my battery was nearly dead as I pulled into the driveway. My stator has low output (12v - 12v - 5v) as measured between the yellow wires. While I have continuity on all windings, I see that there is low resistance (approx. 1500 ohms) to ground, so a lot of voltage is being shunted off.  The high voltage windings are working fine, which is another reason I am glad that the early models have this feature! So....time for a stator rewind. Until it is replaced, I am working on a circuit were I can bring along some SLA batteries and use them to run things until they are low, then switch in the main battery for lighting.

If I actually get this to work, I will post the results, and may even offer my services to a buddy to repair his bad stator in his Moto Morini 500!

Thanks!

Difference in stator cores?
Reply Quote
While we're on the topic, how different are the stator cores between the CX and GL?  Since I'm using the Ignitec, I won't need the ignition windings.  Would it be feasible to rewind one as a charging-only stator?

Thanks,

R

Randall they aren't that different but you're going to want to use a gl stator core because of how the high and low circuits are wired on the cx stator.

If you need one.

Update: got a pair of stators coming my way, so I will keep the group posted on the outcome of this rewind. A check of web site shows only a couple of mentions of the older style rewinds. I will also add my $0.02 worth of knowledge when I get my worked on. Having to trickle charge the battery after every ride kinda sucks!

Brian,

Have a look around the website run in the UK by Hann: http://ofapars-.webs.com/ .

He's done a comprehensive write up of the project stator rewind he did.

And the good thing is he's here also in case there are questions to be asked.

Skip & BlindStitch,

I found Hann's site awhile ago while researching CX's. A great site for mods and repairs. Thanks for the recommendation and I bookmarked it as I forgot his URL.

Yes I have read the stator rewind article previously. In it he notes that the high voltage windings fail on the stators for the CDI bikes and makes the recommendation to switch to the ignitech module. My problem is the opposite-not enough voltage on the charging windings to keep the battery charged! So, I will play with the stator rewind and see what I come up with. I have a long back ground in electronics, and have wound my own toroidal transformers for radio receiver circuits, so winding thin wire is not an issue for me.

forgive the ignorance, but are you guys saying that if you use the ignitech cdi that you don't need the more expensive stator for the 78-81 cx500's?  how does this work?

That's what we are saying.

The current cdi stator  uses 3 circuits. 1 for low, 2 for high and 3 for charging. Well the ignitech kills the need for 1 and 2 taking its power from the battery like the Gl's do.

is there a thread on here explaining all of this?  things such as... does this have any advantages?  can you use the gl stators?  are circuits 1 and 2 the first to normally go?  i'm curious to learn what this all means.

There are probably several threads.

Advantages. The cx stator only puts out 170 watts vs. the gl 250 watt stator.  Yes the gl stator fits just right.

Circuits 1 and 2 are fun. The low one is normally the second to go. If the high circuit goes you won't be able to drive over 50mph. If the low goes then the bike won't even start.  Eliminating these makes a lot of sense. The one thing that sucks about it is that with the high and low circuits can actually power the bike if the battery dies or the main fuse snaps.  But if you are using the ignitech then these two circuits won't be used for anything.

It's win win especially if you already have the ignitech.
