I have discovered a broken carb float in my 1980 Cx 500 Custom. I have a couple floats from I believe a 78 or 79 cx and I was wondering if I could swap them ?

I was having problems over 5000 rpm's and some acceleration sputtering. Would this be a symptom of a cracked float ?

Yes it will cause major Carburettor/Fuel problems.

You can swap floats from the carbs so long as you have the corresponding Float needle valves. There are two types of Float assemblies used in these carburettors.Full Plastic/Nylon with a slotted Float needle Valve,

and the usually Black and metal type that have a small spring on the Float needle valve. Both must be set correctly to the carburettors to work correctly,

Probably not but if you are using IE this forum doesn't like it.I stopped using IE many years a go anyway,

http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/

Once you get used to Firefox you won't want to go back to IE.

PS
You can re-grind the tips of the Float Needle Valves lightly so they seat correctly using your fingers and a little toothpaste on them. This is recommended in my Haynes Workshop manual. Then clean with carb cleaner.

My guess is it's this older version of the forum software that's so browser picky.

Yeah, if you don't use firefox, it doesn't work, but the good news is a new forum is very imminent.  Welcome, and you're in good hands here.

ps, don't even attempt to use the quote feature without firefox.

seriously.

Don't do it. :)

These don't look like any of my Carbs but then I only have UK 1980 CXs and the carb don't have accelerator pumps. If the floats fit and work cool

I must say Marz that you took your carbs apart more than you needed to. Wow! You didn't need to remove the throttle plates, but it looks like you did a great job putting them back together. Congrats!
Let us know how they run when their back on the bike.
Larry

By the way, there is an all Japanese bike show up this way this coming weekend. You should try to make it. It's in Auburn at the fair grounds. It's a swap meet too. So you might find parts you may need.

If your going to do something, do it right, don't do it half as@*d.

The bike is running bettethr. I picked up the bike in Feb. and I have had trouble over 5000 rpm. Never could get past . replaced air filter and spark plugs. I was able to get up to 40 mph in 2nd and then took it on the freeway and was able to get up to 70 in 4th , but could not get past 60 in 5th. The bike used to top out at 55 , so I have not been able to ride on the freeway before today. I am still betting some bogging and the bike backfired or made a popping noise a couple of time when accelerating to fast. For the first time the bike can get past 5k and up to 8 or 9k if I throttle slowly. Overall the acceleration is better. Is there some tuning I can do on the carb ? going to attempt a valve adjustment in a few weeks.
