Bike is running very well, but now I have a new problem. It has always had a ticking from the clutch area. Well tonight I took it for a ride and by time I returned home, there's a new noise from the clutch are, that dissapears when I pull the clutch in. I looked at the factory service manual, and to remove the clutch, it calls for the clutch center holder.
Two questions, first, does that sound like the clutch needs replaced? Second, is that center holder necessary?

Check the tension on the clutch cable, it's the easiest thing to check and it solved my clutch rattle. Secondly, you can remove the clutch without the special ratchet, but you run the risk of breaking the nut (they don't make them anymore), what I did was order the generic honda clutch nut tool off the internet, it was about 10 bucks, and modified it with a dremel tool. You can go and order the correct one from honda, but expect to pay 75-80 dollars.

Not especially recomended but did work when I replaced my clutch. Put the bike in 5th gear and lock up the rear wheel with a rope and get a drift and hammer and a couple of well placed reasonable blows removed the nut easily. I've done this many times on larger nuts and works....like I said it can be done this way but it damages the nut slightly. I ran that CX for years afterward with no problem. Except stator!

I've had my clutch nut ('81 Custom 73K) on and off numerous times without the need of any special tools. Like Astroguy, I used a hefty drift pin and hammer and with a couple well placed whacks, the nut loosened. Keep in mind this method is crude and you may not feel comfortable using it, but it's worked for me. My nut does show numerous dings on the lobes from the impact of the drift and there really is no way of measuring the torque when reinstalling, using the same the same technique. I've always left my bike in neutral for fear of damaging the drive train..... I'm not exactly recommending this procedure since it is definitely somewhat primitive, but like I said I've done three or four clutch rebuilds over the years and this was the way I went...good luck if you go for it......gweric

Well, here's another question. The clutch operates fine, just makes a rattling noise when in neutral until you pull the lever. What happens if I ride it the way it is for a little while?

From what I understand (been told) it will cause no other issues other than being noisy and it's typically caused by the throw out bearing.
Everywhere I've asked I've been told the same thing including at a small independent shop here in town that's worked on Hondas for over 30yrs and as well at the dealer when I had a tire installed...it's "normal" for the old Honda clutches.
I have it too, the rest of the bike sounds great but I'm in no major hurry to replace the clutch or maybe just the bearing if possible until the off season...it works just fine and dandy !
