Cafe Style Project. Questions on Wiring.
Reply Quote
Hey guys, great site.  I picked up a 79 CX500 a couple weeks ago for $100 not running, cleaned the carbs and it runs great.  This weekend I decided to cut it up to make it more cafe looking.  I have been lurking around here for ideas and I didn't really like the way the shape of the CX frame leaves a gap when you put a Cafe style seat on it so I decided to cut the rear section and make a new one.

My question is about the wiring.  Does anyone have a link to info on what you can get rid of?  I am overwhelmed by all of it, it is everywhere.  I am not going to have any blinkers at all, no gauges, and only need just the key switch for on/off.  Thanks for the help!

After removal of huge king/queen seat and sissy bar:

Cut off the rear section:

The bike is a Custom, so I had to get a different tank.  Picked up this tank cheap, not sure if it is going to work for the look I am after though.  It is off of a newer Triumph.

The rear section I made:

Looks like a great direction you are heading. You look like you know what you are doing! Just make sure you have enough travel back there for the swing-arm/rear tire.

A long time ago I had this 48 Indian chief (without blinkers of course). One night with someone on back I stopped on a state road to turn left. I was in the center of the road with nobody coming but there was a car behind me so I turned... Guess what the guy behind me was passing me on the left. I had no idea he was there untill he swerved around us at about 40 mph. Somehow he missed us. Moral is think about removing the blinkers.

Cant help on the electrical, but I like the way you fixed the "problem" with the rear frame. I'm seriously thinking about copying your style there. Any words of advice on the rear frame?

I wonder if this is a section from another frame?? I need more details. This could save me a ton of time trying to fab a sub frame for my seat or trying to fab a seat from a cb360 tank. Looking forward to a response from the OP.

It doesn't look like anything a pipe bender and welder couldn't do.

No secrets here... just looked at many pics of CX cafe style bikes, then looked at cafe CB's (IMO one of the best cafe candidates, nice balance of price/looks), Triumphs, etc. and tried to find the easiest/quickest route to the look I wanted.  In another life I dabble in Jeep/military truck modification and along the way I made some different parts out of tubing/pipe and a "real" tubing bender and dies will set you back at least $1,000, but you can get a Harbor Freight "pipe" bender for $60 and it will work fine for limited use.  Helps to fill the pipe/tube with sand to keep from "kinking" it.

http://www.harborfreight.com/12-ton-hydraulic-pipe-bender-32888.aspx

Anyway, just took some pipe, tape measure, chop saw, grinder, pipe bender, couple beers, few hours on a Saturday, and this is what I got.

In the great state of Oklahoma you only have to have blinkers on 2005 and later motorcycles.  Lawmakers are strange, but I am not going to argue.

Can you post a few more up close pics of the tail piece?  I'm going to have my bud take a look and get some measurements together for my bike. I'm going to try this same thing.

What type of material did you use for the frame?

Hey Donk,
Welcome to the insanity.
I felt the same way about the spaghetti, In a nut shell I retained all the ignition circuits and the charging circuits by slicing opened the harness, studying the diagram and cutting out circuits till I had 2 wires to the front (Headlamp and horn) and 2 to the rear (Tail lamp and brake lamp) only a rear brake switch, a dimmer switch located on the headlight shell. I used a fuse panel I got off ebay and a Cole ignition switch, the kill switch was a vintage plunger type light switch shorted to ground when pulled out. All the fuses and switches were relocated to a side panel.
You can replace your handle bar controls to exclude the switches and add a horn button.
Here is a web site I used as a "Guide line"
http://cycles.evanfell.com/2010/03/simple-motorcycle-wiring-diagram-for-choppers-and-cafe-racers/

Rusty

P.s. I relocated the electrics from under the seat to a void behind the battery and in front of the fender. This included the CDI electrical plugs and wire harness from the stator. If you look at the post your ride section I'm on page 17. I'm sure you can do a much better job of leaning up the wires than I did.

Here are a couple pics, I will get more for you.  You can use chromoly tubing, DOM tubing, old handlebars, old frames, or even black gas pipe from Home Depot.  The round parts of the frame are 3/4 ID (inner diameter), 1" OD (outer diameter).  If you go looking for pipe, they sell it by the ID, if you are looking for tubing, they sell it by OD.  It's confusing and stupid if you ask me, and some of the people you ask at metal supply houses look at you like you are crazy.

Nice, thanks. I have been doing a lot of reading about sch. 40 pipe (blk pipe) versus DOM tube. DOM tube is expensive. What material did you use?

I used black pipe cause that is what I had sitting around when I decided to do this on a whim.  I have seen lots of roll cages on rock crawlers built out of black pipe that have rolled and the cage held up just fine.  For motorcycle use this is not even relevant, the stock tubing on the bike was much thinner material than the pipe I was welding to it.  If you are building a race car I would use DOM, $10-13 a foot is crazy.  HREW (hot rolled electric welded) or CREW (cold rolled electric weld) is a good choice if you can find it as it is usually $3-4 a foot.  It is a tubing so it is measured OD like DOM.  DOM is seamless tubing that is drawn on a mandrel and HREW and CREW are rolled into tubing, then welded.

Yea, I received a few quotes from Alro for DOM, CREW, and HREW. HREW tubing is 1/2 the cost of DOM. I am curious the weight difference between sch40 pipe and 1" HREW? If it isn't much I may just keep it cheap and go with the black pipe. I'm creating a drawing with a few dimensions of my own to follow. I really like your mod, I'll post some mock-up drawings of what my plan is later.

Will you be fabbing a custom seat/pan? Or do you plan to purchase?
