Confused [8-)] Running rough and clutch
Reply Quote
The bike is back together after a flywheel and stator change. I got it started and it runs rough, missing and will not idle on its own. Thought I had the timing set right. Am I going to have to go back in and adjust it? If I do that is it easier to drop the motor again or pull the rear tire and shock? Also I have no clutch. I press the lever in and there is no resistance.

Which bike did you do work on?

Did you make sure to line the chain up with the diagram and woodruff key?

I sent this earlier to Soocarman, but I'll post it here too. Maybe it will get the creative juices flowing.

It could be the timing, but also make sure you don't have any air leaks between the carbs and the engine. I remember that guys were checking this by spraying starter fluid or something around the area and listing for a increase of RPM.  Also, try attaching a car battery to the bike and running it with that... just want to make sure that it's not something wrong with your newly rewound stator.

The manual I have says to remove the rear tire and possibly the swing arm if you want to get at the timing. It must be pretty close if it's running at all.

As for the clutch... you did remember to attached the clutch cable to the lever arm on the lower right side of the engine (clutch cover), right?  Otherwise, if you move the lever arm by hand, then you should feel the spring resistance there... if not then there may be a problem with the springs.  Remember when I said your clutch had a "click" feel/sound to it that mine didn't... I hope that's not a sign of more trouble.

After the last reassembly it started easier. It runs on half choke, when I quit the choke it would die. Then I would have to crank and crank playing with the choke and throttle. It would finally start and run well as long as it was half throttle. I think it is a carb issue, even before when I was riding it I did smell gas as I drove. Maybe the former owner didn't have it right.
I did check on the cost of a carb service at the local Honda dealer. The clutch just need to be adjusted.
