What is the current wisdom concerning bearing grease? New synthetic type or an older style with moly in it?
Thanks for your thoughts all.

I hear a lot about Moly and all I know is when David helped me do my tapered head bearings he had a green pack of a few ounces of grease that he valued as gold.

I'm sorry, was the green stuff moly or was it synthetic? At the local auto parts store I was looking at some different types of grease and noticed that the moly would work at somewhere around 50* F hotter than the synthetic. That said I have no idea how hot bearings get at normal highway speeds, although it can't be anywhere near the max temp of the grease.

I can only imagine what kind of temperature the bearing grease has to be exposed to in automobiles with disk brakes. I don't think your steering head bearings would be a problem.

Oh, didn'y want to cause confusion. I need grease for my wheel bearings. Head bearing would be somewhere around ambient temp. No problem.

So that would mean buying 4 individual bearings? At tht price I may as well get a set for spares.

Yes.You need 4.Don't get ripped-off by so called,"Honda" bearings as they all get them from bearing suppliers and they are a common industrial part. They last for years as well if in regular use.Hardly worth trying to service IMHO.
PS I crack the old ones open and use the ball bearings in things like Metal polish tins the same as a ,"Rattle Can" so I can agitate the polish that settles and cutting compound bottles.

You may even find those exact bearings locally at a bearing/seal shop, we've got one here that has a ton of them.
From what the guy told me bearings have been pretty standard for ages. When they come up with a certain size & design they keep it, if a redesign of materials/construction comes along they do it without creating new dimensions.
Industry standard I think is the word I'm looking for here, he also commented that bearings have always been metric in size even though they list many of them in inch dimensions. Helps to keep them even more universal.

Damn Shep. Another money saver. But this time I only added it to my ebay watch list. I'm going to see if I can find them locally first. Not that these are unreasonable but why not support the local guy when you can. I have to replace my brake shoes one of these days so I mise well not half ass it.

Last year Bro Dave and Ernie were touring in the west, and Dave's ('83?) G'Wing front wheel bearing began to complain in Montana. Local Honda shop had none in stock, but he found the exact same bearings at a lawn mower shop. A few hours later the tour continued. I think they were common to many bikes of that era too.

Brings back memories. Marshallf3 is right. My first job out of high school was as a draftsman for McGill Manufacturing, a bearing manufacturer in Valparaiso, Indiana. During my two years at McGill there might have been three occasions in which we designed a completely new assembly. The rest of time we made fairly small changes to tolerances and materials of existing designs depending upon the customer's needs and applications.
Looking back it seems both odd and more than a bit scary that an eighteen year old pimply faced non-engineer would be responsible for calculating and entering machining, heat treatment and plating notes for bearing assemblies that were intended to be used in Sikorsky helicopters, F-14 Tomcats and a host of other critical applications. Lawn mowers and bicycles might have made more sense.
