Stupid Czech Police!!!
Reply Quote
As some may have seen a while ago, my girlfriend and I are part of a group in the Czech Republic right now, teaching English camps for high school students. Well, the other day we came back from lunch to find her cabin broken into. Her $1200 camera (Nikon D90), extra lenses (mine), camcorder and iPod missing. Apparently the cretin(s) came in through the window. After searching the camp, we called the police. They came and tried to make it look like they cared, but it's obvious that they won't try very hard to look. And from what the locals tell me, they never take fingerprints. They told me they couldn't do anything without proof that it was stolen. So, just remember, when traveling, be careful!

Man that sucks.  Sorry to hear you got robbed.  Maybe the kids your teaching can find out who did it and retrieve your stuff as well as unleash some retribution on the thiefs.  Most likely the cops look at you are rich Americans, or are part of the theft ring.

Always write down the serial numbers of your equipment and get cheap insurance that covers international travel.

I had a camera that was stolen out of a friends car and all the police wanted to know was the serial number so they could check if it was at a pawn shop. This was a cheap camera at $700 that I never use so I didn't miss it much but it got me thinking.  The police didn't even come check out the vehicle that was broken in to.

I have a policy that covers myself as a working photographer from theft and damage at $10 a month.

If you don't make money off you photos then the policy is even cheaper.

And this experience would have been different how anywhere else in the world?  Property crimes are low on the pole for any police force, anywhere in the world.  In some big cities they don't even send a cop out, they just ask you to fill out a report and submit it to them in case (ha) any of the property shows up.  Only TV cops bring out the latest flourOcrimeOscope which imprints a 3D image of the thieves in the act via the heat trails they left behind.

Doing your own investigating usually gets better results, I'd wager that some of your students would likely have information on what happened, maybe intimate knowledge of the details.

When you get home, check your homeowners policy (if you have one), many of them actually cover this kind of loss, as do some credit cards if you bought your air ticket or the items with their card.

$700 and cheap never go together.  I don't own anything worth that much.  If I had $700 I'd feel very rich.  Wow.

Well this is how the lay out is.
Camera 1 costs $1800
Camera 2 costs $1800
Camera 3 costs $1100
and camera 4 is an el cheapo Fuji for taking on the bike.

Since the cameras are for making money they aren't really play items.  Now if only I could find a way to make money with a motorcycle. That would justify spending a few dollars on a 650.

Just make it up.

Do you think the folks who write books and give lectures on how to make money in real estate actually know how to make money in real estate?  Or do they know how to make money writing books and giving lectures on how to make money in real estate?

I'm not referring to real estate agents, but to those who hawk get-rich-quick schemes involving real estate investment "with no money down."  The same is true for the "$10k per week sales from home" schemes and all the multi-level marketing scams.

The money is made in selling the ideas.  Those who try to implement them almost always take a loss.

I agree on that. I have a couple people close to me that were lured into multilevel marketing. They both failed at it. What is sad is that both of these people afterwards truely felt that it was because they personally didn't have the time, moxy, and whatever to make it work!! They lost hundreds of dollars at the blink of an eye..
I simply couldn't believe what I was hearing come out of these individuals! One has a phD and the other an accomplished graphic designer.
My point is those at the top of these multilevel scams are great at brainwashing!

Actually I don't. The camera that got stolen was my most dependable Nikon film camera. All I have left or access to is a Minolta Srt that has some nice lenses. Half mine half hers and my twin lens reflex camera that looks like this.

That camera still has a few exposures left on the roll but it probably won't ever get developed.

I use to shake most of my private work and send out everything else. But eventually time and money started adding up. So $2 for a roll of film, $2 for negative development and only 36 or 37 images. I was shooting 15 rolls a week when I went digital. Only $60 but in a year i'm sure i save by spending $1100 on my first dslr. Has about 50,000 shutter actuations on it.  Then I got the second camera 2 or so years later which has 160,000 actuations and the new one only has 15,000 actuations.

((50,000 + 160,000 + 15,000)/ 36)) X $4 =  $25,000
Well worth the investment.

But I do miss film and the precision of developing and processing my own images.

Looking at your numbers really shows how/why 35mm film use is nearly gone. It is hard to argue quality any longer with how far these dslr's have come. I do still have some velvia slides that would take someone a lot of time on photoshop to get close to them in image quality. Just saying.
Love that twin reflex of yours!

Actually it's not photoshops fault. It's camera film types or camera curves along with camera type. I know that's a lot to swallow but if you put a roll of velvia next to a roll of el cheapo fuji you know which one will come out looking like a turd. The same is said about cameras and ccd/cmos technology.

I have a friend who only uses Fuji cameras for his portrait/landscape work as the sensors seem to be more vibrant although Fuji also runs nikon sensors so it's like kissing cousins. But that's not the complete answer because it isn't here yet. This digital world has overtaken the junk if you can say that. Those people that don't know how or what to expect from a good picture were never velvia customers. So there was no convincing there. It's us guys that used it that need to be convinced. Give it a few more years and I think you will be happy. The development of these HD sensors should blow away the crap that we're using now. But that again refers to people that know what good is.

I took this last week when I was force to go hiking with Melody and she took her camera/my back up camera. I let her use all my equipment that isn't the main and I don't think velvia would have made it much better. I don't usually take flower photos but I thought that the one was interesting. There are parts that velvia might have made better but then again it's just a flower.

I agree with Don about how far digital is coming, and one of the main things about it is that you have an instant readout of the exposure, so you can experiment with different things that you weren't able to accurately get with film. Yes, film has an attractive look, but I have not shot 35mm film since I bought my 6 Megapixel D70 5 years ago. Until a couple of years ago I would still shoot 120 film, but it got too expensive, and too hard to find.

To update on the police, they did come back and say that they are looking, but have no leads. It at least made me feel a little better. I was able to get the camera serial number from my EXIF data, but I don't have the lens serial numbers with me, so I won't have them until I get home. I don't hold out any hope for ever seeing the gear again, and I am most pissed that I have missed so many great shots while I am here. Hopefully my renter's insurance can cover some of it. I am definitely purchasing insurance on whatever gear I replace it with. I am thinking minimum D300s, but I will wait and see what Nikon releases later this year.

At this point you are better to wait out till the second month of the new nikon release unless you get on an imaginary list now. I do like my D300s but I bought it when I needed it because I needed it. It is a hair nicer than the D200 and will smoke that D70 right out of the box. But as in all digital cameras at the moment they are all nice. I have also used the D1, D1H, D2H, D2X, D100, D50, D40, D80 and D90. If you had a D1 in your hands right now being 10 years old and tried to compare the photo's it gives to anything you would be shocked at how far digital has came.  At the second newspaper they had tried to force me to use one with no rubber on it because it was that used and I refused. Why go back when my D200 was beating it by leaps and bounds. But if you do get one of those major D series cameras in your hands try to let go of them. They feel wonderful if you don't have small hands. I almost bought a D2h because of the feel and it was very solid. But I'm not a fan of 4 megapixels.

I haven't tried the D700 but i'm curious. Most cameras no matter how cheap when used right will give great results.

I am amazed that there are as many people still using film. I go to Sams when I need prints from my digital camera. I like the prints that I get from the Kodak machine and the price is right. I see the processing folk busy all the time developing and printing 35mm film. The woman that works there says that she doesn't understand why there are so many folk still using film but it keeps her employed. My film camera is a RB67 that I just use for portraits. BillRod

Glad to hear the police are at least showing you some effort.

Film=fun. There is something to be said about composure of an image. With film you only have so many pictures you can make. You better have your camera and subject set up how you want-you won't know till well after the fact upon developing.
Film forced us to have a really deep understanding of exposure control. It is a art thing.
I see this as similar to the six shooter pistol. Perfect in form, function, and reliability. But set aside and forgotten to the semi-auto's. People would rather be able to spray than to 'compose' their shots.

I am reluctant to give up what works so well for me. My perspective is different as I am not a professional photo guy. I do enjoy the convenience of my canon D30.
Awesome composure on that flower pic Blindstich! You got the eye!

Don, I know what you mean about old equipment. As good as my D70 was when I bought it, there are features that even a new P&S have that the D70 never can. I will continue to use it because it is what I have, and I can take amazing shots with it. But I am very anxious to see what Nikon will come out with. I would love to have a full frame, but the DX format does everything I need, and it's affordable. As far as film goes, even with digital you are better off composing. I used to work at a photo lab, and we had several local pros that would come in with roll after roll of the same portraits, every frame looking the same, hoping that shooting 4 frames a second gets them "that look." Compare that to one of the guys in the lab who could walk in with a 24 exposure roll, every single frame a different look from a different model, and every one worthy of publishing. I will always have more respect for the guys who spend the time upfront, instead of fixing in photoshop. Maybe that's why I love shooting medium and large format so much.
