Smile [:)] Primary Main Nozzle-Removal and Repair
Reply Quote
Hi Guys, In my main carbs and (1) set of spares I used a combination of techniques to remove, then subsequently repair (and reuse) the primary main nozzles.
My findings- EVEN AFTER using an ultrasonic (Simple Green solution), heat (microbutane torch), carb cleaner, PB Blaster (drip) , then CLR (drip)- the !@#$%^&*!!! were STILL frozen solid in there., and wouldnt bulge. More heat, more ultrasonic-still no joy.
I (as delicately) as possible using a #1 "easy out"--- my intention being to preserve and reuse., removed them. I was shocked to see (after all of the above cleaning-they were still dirty) I had even used a micro(airbrush) cleaning brush, dipped in carb cleaner-still dirty upon removal.
After removal I carefully ground a new Sears 1/8" flatblade screwdriver (with a Dremel tool), carefully sizing it to the 1' nozzle screw bore (just as Larry describes in his book). I then dressed the carb bore casing where the nozzle threads with the 10/32 tap (ala L.s advice), THEN I used a new flat cut off wheel on the Dremel to redefine the 1' main nozzle slots, flatten their heads. Next I used a series of sandpapers (400, 600, 1000) to refine. Recleaned in carb cleaner.
THE RESULT- the 1' main nozzles are now cleaned , refined, and preserved for further use.
THE LESSON ( I learned)- NO amount of ultrasonic, carb cleaner , etc. can clean them in-situ--they were still "dirty" upon removal. and so should be removed to do a Larry-like job!! Sam

I found the same situation - still calcified and clogged after several rounds in the ultrasonic. Larry's book was dead on. What surprises me most is how controversial his process of using an extractor ro remove the jet seems to be. All I know is that his method works.

I agree fully! Larry's book is worth a lot more than I paid.

Yeh,... I'm trying to coax him into including a few pages on his polishing technic in the second edition!
