ok i got a charging question
|
|
|
|
|
first of all i checked the 3 yellow wires coming from the stator and they all have continuity. so i assume my stator is good? is this a correct assumption?
secondly with the bike running and a fully charged battery i get 12,4 to 12.6 volts across the terminals. i know this is too low to keep the battery charged but i dont know what the problem could be.
could it be the regulator/rectifier?
another possibility i was thinkingis could it be the ignition switch?? is there some sorta cutout internally inside the switch for the charging side of things?

You should have more than 35V AC between each leg of the stator when the stator is disconnected from the regulator and the engine is not idling. A resistance measurement is too inaccurate to tell for sure if the stator works or not. You either have a bad contact in the charging circuit or a bad stator or a bad r/r. It's not the ignition switch.

This is a necessary condition, but by itself is not sufficient to indicate the stator is good. For charging system troubleshooting information see this writeup.

What was the engine speed when this voltage was measured? Or more importantly, what is the voltage when the engine is running at 2000 rpm? The regulator/rectifier may be bad but that rarely happens on these bikes.

No, there is no charging cutout associated with the ignition switch.

the engine rpm was around 3000 when i checked the voltage.
the voltage at 2000 rpm is 12.5 and when ya slowly rev it up you can see a slight voltage change on the multi meter. the voltage goes up ever so slightly like from 12.50 to 12.59.

Sounds like you have a bad stator. As a final check, do what pappa recommended and measure the voltage coming from the stator on the 3 yellow wires. Just measure across all combinations of the three. You should be seeing a minimum of 35 volts, and better, close to 50 volts. Make sure you switch your meter to AC voltage for this. This will confirm the actual output of the charging coils in the stator, and eliminate the chance of the RR being bad.

thanks alot for the info guys..
i just did the test that bluefox said to do with the 3 yellow wires
my highest voltage was 21 volts . and one of the 3 had 0
so ladies and gentle men my stator has left the building
wheres the best place to buy one?
