Wheel cleaning questions
Reply Quote
Hi All
We have purchased a couple of used/old CX500 wheels (Comstar type) to replace the reverse Comstars on our GL500. These older comstars need rust removal (steel parts) and general cleaning.
Can the black plastic dohickies covering the rivets at the rim be easily removed and reinstalled to facilitate the cleaning. (We don't wanna break them)
Anyone have a recommended cleaning link or suggested procedure to restore these wheels?

We will replace the bearings as a cheap high reward fix while the wheels are off so a soak procedure would be possible.
Thanx

Use a heat gun or put them in the sun on a HOT day before you try to pop them off. They have two split type plastic pins that push into a hole. If you try to remove them cold, they could break the clips.
If you need a few of them when your done let me know. I have some I removed from the bike in my avatar years ago.

What ever you do DO NOT USE ANY ACID based cleaner (like Castrol Super Clean)on the rims aluminum part. It WILL stain the anodized finish. The steel section of the wheel can be polished with metal polish to clean them up. You could also try 0000 steel wool.

If your going to do something, do it right, don't do it half as@*d.

Thanx for the info. This is just what we needed to find out. We were able to remove all the "Honda" black plastic tabs. This will make refurbishment easier.

OK one more question. How to remove the surface rust hidden on the backside of the "spokes". Kinda hard to get into that area. Thanx

I've had great sucess removing rust with a product called Evaporust.

It's safe to use, non toxic, non corrosive and anything I put in rusty to soak overnight is rust free the next morning.

I pay about $10.00 a Litre and you can pour it back in the bottle and re use it till it turns black from all all the rust it dissolves.

It's my favourite rust treatment.
