OT: No title on trailer/Subterfuge?
|

This has got nothing to do with our bikes but I want some opinions: I'm negotiating with a fellow to buy a used boat. He had acquired it from an estate some years ago and while the title is clear on the boat, the trailer is untitled. I just got off the phone with the DMV and it looks like the trailer *can't* be titled without getting the executor of the original owner to sign notarized documents, etc. In other words, that ain't gonna happen. Bottom line: I can't get a title for the trailer. I am confident it's not stolen.
So here's the subterfuge: what is to keep me from buying a POS trailer with a clear title, registering it, then putting the plates on my untitled trailer? It's not like boat trailers have well known names and manufacturers, like Chevy or Ford. I figure if the cops pull me over, I'll produce valid registration for my truck, my boat, and for *a* trailer to carry that boat.
Downsides? My exposure is likely to be minimal as I live only about a mile from the marina.

Sounds like a DMV scam. Harbor freight sells utility trailers.
Here's one for you. Wisconsin doesn't require trailers to be registered or plated and in most cases they aren't titled either.
I say do what you want about the trailer. Maybe if you want buy a trailer like I did from harbor freight for hauling motorcycles and swap the plates back and forth. This way if you want to take the bike with you then you won't have to rent something.

From one Jay @ 55 to another, In Pennsylvania years ago i built a trailer from scratch had to provide clear pictures to the dmv, they in turn issued a new construction vin number and i was off pullin that baby. Why couldn't you say you built it from parts?? Find out in SC what's required when you do a new const
I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it

Can you get a home-made designation for your trailer by modifying it?

Let me clear up some apparent confusion: I am talking about a boat trailer; not a utility trailer. I actually already own a utility trailer that is properly titled and that's what I use to haul my motorcycle when it needs to be moved and riding it isn't an option. But in this case, the untitled trailer is the one hauling the boat.
Anyway, I just got off the phone with the chief of police of my little town. We spoke in broad hypotheticals but I think I'm going to walk away from this deal. As we spoke, I was reminded of the shit that blew up in my face when I bought my Silverwing just because the previous owner was trying to screw the DMV out of some bucks. He saved the money but I was the one who suffered all the grief.
It just doesn't pay to try to do things crooked around here. I've got too much to lose if I were to get pinched with a fake tag. (Nursing license, concealed carry permit, money...)
Thanks anyway.

here in az if you make a home built trailer (boat ,car, what ever) and take it to the dmv they issue you a plate and a title so i think if you customize the trailer you should be golden

The high road is usually the best road in a small town and especially if you have a lot to lose.
Just gotta ask yourself, Is the crime worth the fine?

When I bought my utility trailer the VIN tag was a metallic like decal that needed to be applied to the trailer. I never put it on the trailer, just kept it in the glove compartment of my truck. No metal riveted tag or etched hidden VIN # like on a car or motorcycle.
I'm sure one day I could always toss the trailer and sell just the VIN tag and title for a good chunk of change. If I were to buy another trailer of the same size without a title and put that VIN tag on it and use the old title, no one will prove it's not the original trailer.
As far as boat trailer vs. utility trailer...do some states require a license on one and not the other?

In North Carolina a trailer is a trailer so far as the state is concerned. If they go on the road, they've got to be registered and a license plate displayed. The boat, oddly enough, is not registered with the DMV but rather the Wildlife Resources Commission. The trailer is registered with the DMV.
The problem with using the plate I've already got for my utility trailer is that it's a Leonard trailer and I think the local cops are aware Leonard doesn't make boat trailers. And the chief of police here told me that a cop doing a traffic stop would likely run the trailer plate first simply because it's going to be what he sees first. The boat gets in the way of the truck's plate.
Anyway, I've told the seller I'd decided against taking the chance. It's not just the locals in my town, it's the locals in the next town over (Surf City) who love to pull people for any excuse they can find, and also the Highway Patrol. Even though the marina is only a mile from the house, I have to get the boat from a town an hour away to get it to my house. During that hour, I'd have to cross 5 jusrisdictions just to park it in my driveway.

I'm curious, did you look into titling it as a home built trailer?
It'd be no different than if you sliced it up and welded it back together, making whatever modifications you felt like making. Just my .02
