My kickstand is leaning the bike over too much. It seems that the tang (ear??) that is welded on to the frame and is the attachment point for the arm of the sidestand is worn away some. Anyone have an old gl-500 frame and can cut the tang off for me?? Thanks DES

Since you'll have to weld it back on anyway, why don't you just weld up the thickness and grind it back down to the right thickness. That's what I have done on several bikes I have restored.
If your going to do something, do it right, don't do it half as@*d. 78 CX500 Std, 79 CX500 project, 80 CX500C, 83 GL650I http://globalcxglvtwins.hostingdelivered.com/

I have done it Larry's way on one bike. It isn't the easiest thing to weld up and then bore a correct size and placed hole thru the weld for the mounting bolt. I only have a stick welder, so I'm limited a little. If you had the frame stripped, it wouldn't be quite as bad, but doing it with everything on, is more of a challenge.
On the last GL650 I picked up, I had the same problem. I mostly solved it by cutting the stand in two and inserting a bolt inside and welding it back in place. I think I added about 1-1/4" of length to the stand. I also squeezed the mounting "C" in a vise and added a spacer washer on the bolt to keep the yoke compressed. It seems to be working fine, altho I did overdo the length a bit. Now the side stand will not come down unless the center stand is up. Not a big deal, but something I didn't catch when I was doing this.

The reason I want a replacement one is to have it ready to go when I get the old one out. A friend will weld it for me and I do not want to tie up the bike or him when we get the old one off. DES
