an other cafe racer on the way

Hi everyone, here’s my bike shaping up. Got it last year, that poor little thing was rotting in bad hands. It came with high handle bars, safety bars on the engine, horrible mirrors and a c tank. Still lot of work needs to be done, espescially get rid of those hugh turn signals!
Anyway, I changed the oil myself for the first time and I did dare to put car oil. I know I know... The gears seems to slip when I go high on rpm, does it have anything to do with it? It wasn’t doing that last summer...

Wow, looks good and will stand out compared to similar cafe styles,
... love the mustard color included around the radiator / brown seat/ and chrome fenders!
awesome bar, and bar-end mirrors!

edit:
not that it would look good once done,
but wonder if the reverse comstars had the black painted brown like the seat....
Couple GL's and CX650 ... everythings in work....

That is one of the most beautiful bikes I have ever seen.

I have been intending to do a brown seat on my bike, and I may steal your mustard color.

Very tastefully done, Im floored.

Nice work.

Your clutch is slipping at high RPM  probably because the additives in automobile oil were never intended to be used with a wet clutch like we have in our CX's.

I would suggest a trip to Canadian Tire and an oil change with their 10W 40 Motorcycle oil as the cheapest treatment.
You can probably re use the filter after examining it.

The difference should be aparent quickly, although a repeat oil change or even replacement of the clutch plates may be necessary, depending on many factors.

My friends always tell me to try the cheap and simple solutions first, then escalate as necessary.

Love the warm look of the colours.

Thanks Stan, I’m sure you’re right. Any oil was my neighboor’s recommandation, but he has a Norton and I beleive his transmission in appart from the engine. I’ll get you back with results after my Canadian tire errand.

Hi again, I did changed th eoil for cheap motomaster motobike oil and the problem seems to have decreased. I went for a quick run on the over pass. Its still there but less I’m sure. I’ll change it again in a few weeks and hopefully I won’´t have to change the clutch parts. Thanks again fir your tips.

That looks awesome.  Is that seat custom or off of another bike?  I was looking for something with the same look for my cx project.

When you changed the oil to Automotive oil did you use synthetic example: Mobile 1 Synthetic? Some have said this is too slick for motorcycle clutches? I have never used auto oil just curious?

I think it was semi. Castrol gtx. But I’ll never do it again. Even after a full oil change, there’s still residue of the car oil and the clutch slips, but not as much as before. I was told several oil change might be needed I its my case.

Did you have any mounting issues when you put the CB seat on the CX? I HATTTTEEEEE the seat that I have on there now and I was hoping to find something I can put on without having to build a seat from the ground up. The bike looks great!

Thanks! I did a bit have difficulties, it was my first mod ever on a bike! I had to make some home made brackets to have it fit in. But no need to modifie the seat itself really nore the frame. It could be safer with a bit of welding in there for sure. Good luck!

FYI regarding the oil:

The problem is not related to whether it's synthetic or not. Synthetic base stock oils are superior to conventional oils in every way -- that's a simple fact.

The problem is that most car oils are rated "Energy Conserving". That is a good thing for cars because it indicates the presence of friction modifiers that reduce friction in some instances. Unfortunately, those friction modifiers also reduce friction at the clutch plates of a wet clutch -- which is why yours was slipping.

So you can use synthetic, semi-synthetic or conventional oil... just don't use one that has an Energy Conserving rating.

One of the best motorcycle oils you can buy is not marketed as a motorcycle oil at all -- Shell Rotella. It comes in both sythetic and conventional. It's marketed as an oil for diesel engines. It is designed to withstand the extreme shearing that oils are exposed to when used as a transmission lubricant -- like in a motorcycle.

EDIT: BTW, nice job on the bike. It looks fantastic!
