Removing air box and center stand
|
|
|
|
|
I haven't been able to use a google site search for a while, anyone else having this happen? I wasn't able to look in to others who have removed the air box. I remember reading it can be a bitch, anyone have any tips? I definitely remember reading sawzall and maybe a few expletives, haha. I'll also be removing the center stand and seem to remember some people saying that can be tricky as well. I'd like to avoid cutting anything, thanks

If you take the rear tire off you will have more access to the bolt area below the box.
I take the tire off, then wiring and remove the hoses and airbox base. Then I wiggle it out the back end. It's really a trick. But better than smashing it in case you need it down the road.

mine came out pretty easily without pulling the tire. no sawzall either. just some finesse and twisting. its been a while so i don't remeber exactly how i did it but the air box is intact sitting in the junk pile

I didn't find it that hard, rear wheel off, airbox base out (three bolts for that) and from there it was pretty easy, so much so I don't really remember what else I had to do to get it done. I was expecting a lot worse based on others comments.
Cheers Steve

Thanks for the info, might be longer than I expected as $$$ is a bit of a barrier at the moment. With all the variables that come with putting on pods and different exhaust pipes (plus electrical relocation issues) I think I'm gonna just wait until I can get pods, pipes, jets, and get a crossover made like Steve's. Probably better to just do the tuning once instead of every time a fuel/exhaust mod is done. I'll probably ditch the center stand at the same time, my bike is gonna loose some serious weight after getting rid of the stock airbox, crossover, mufflers, side covers, and center stand!

I was able to remove my air box without removing the tire or
anything additional; on a 78 cx500 deluxe. The trick of it was removing
the top of the air box and detaching the rear fender. To remove the
top of the air box a 90 degree phillips is needed to reach all screws.
Once top is removed push back the rear fender to create some additional
room, then push the air box up and pull the bottom out. With a little
force the air box should slowly slide out. Here is a few pictures to
help describe how it was completed.

Thanks Tommy, these pics help out a lot. Can you post a pic of your bike? I'd like to see a bigger pic of your streetfighter.

Here is a few pics...Still have some work to do and haven't had a chance to remount the battery. I plan on fabricating a battery box on Monday and will post an update then.

Freshly fabricated battery box. Used a break press to mold the box, then bolted it to the frame.

Looks fantastic.
I keep telling my wife this winter I want to tear the bike down and make it more "sporty" but she complains and says she loves it the way it is and I'll ruin it. :( (telling her she's not the one that rides it doesn't do me any good)

Damn! That's a nice battery box! It will almost be invisible if you paint it black!

Thanks. Luckily I didn't have to re-jet. I adjusted the idle mixture screws and seems to be running fine, with smooth acceleration.
