Clutch and primary swap GL500 to GL650
Reply Quote
Hi I'm changing the clutch and primary gear on my GL500 and replacing it with a set from a GL650 has anyone done this? I need to make sure I can do it and use the same front cover and clutch cover before I tear it down. Thank you Kevin

You will want to get a 650 splash guard since it's needed to clear the clutch bolts.
They are still available through honda for around $20.

Thank you for the info I'm looking at these pictures and I'm looking at my Manual and it doesn't look like I need that sleeve for a spacer. In the manual for my 82 GL500 the clutch doesn't have that molded extension on it it looks almost the same as the GL650 clutch basket. Is the Early CX 500 a little differant designe then the 82 GL500? Thank you Kevin

You are correct. The gl parts are the same where as the cx500 clutch is a lot different but the swap still works the same.

My GL500/Gl650 clutch and primary swap. Well I just finished it up and got back from the road test. I must say it was worth every bit of effort and money! It took 500 RPMs off the top and the heavier clutch is great. This is the setup it should have come with from the factory. At 70 MPH it used to turn 6800 RPM’s now at 70 it turns between 6250 and 6300 RPM’s I just caught myself cruising about 75 without realizing it. It cruises great at 70. That little bit makes a big difference. The clutch is a little harder to pull but it’s worth it. It grabs like a racing clutch when you get on it real hard.

This is my second GL500 I bought my first one new and rode it for 15 years carefree. The only thing I didn’t like about that bike was I felt it always needed an overdrive. I’d like to thank everyone that has helped me with this project I would have never thought of doing it without the great info I got here. The only special tool I needed was a clutch nut socket witch I made out of a piece of pipe and welded a socket on it and a 14 MM bolt from a Toyota I screwed into the fan to remove it. I was able to torque the primary gear and clutch hub bolt by putting the bike in fifth gear and holding the rear brake down..

I was able to buy the parts on EBay. I found a place that was selling all the parts together I got all of it for $21.00 plus shipping. I also replaced the upper radiator hose I went to NAPA they had 7/8 Super heavy duty heater hose Good to 80 PSI It worked great I got enough to do the bottom one later. One other thing that need to be mentioned is to get the radiator our if you have a Interstate model you need to remove the fairing and mounting bracket

$21
You must have stole those parts. I have $15 into the splash guard alone. $15 for the gasket and the whole clutch for $50. Still have to pay the $50 and pick it up but the parts are in a good place.

This is all out in left field but I was thinking of adapting a hydraulic clutch slave cylinder but then when I visited several honda dealers I saw that many of the bikes were cable driven.
