Tappet Question for Shep....
Reply Quote
Shep, when you use the flapper wheel on your tappets, how fast are you rotating? I have a standard drill and also a Dremel, which would be best for dressing the tappet? In other words, about what RPM is best?

Just do it by feel.Place the tappet in a vice and run the flapper over the head of the tappet to take out any pits at whatever speed you are comfortable with.If there are no pits just play it lightly to make a flattish surface and then use a bit of 120/180 grit and then a bit of 500+ grit to polish make a shallow meniscus by running your hand over it with the grit paper in your palm.
The aim is just to make an even, pit free none square slightly rounded face.Once you have done one you will realize just how easy it is and from then on in about 8,000 miles plus you can do them by hand with a bit of 500 just to keep them smooth and polished if needed.

The explanation is way more complicated than the job once you have done one
