Gl500 gl650 primary and clutch swap

Hi I'm changing the clutch and primary gear on my GL500 and replacing it with a set from a GL650 has anyone done this? I need to make sure I can do it and use the same front cover and clutch cover before I tear it down. Thank you Kevin

Hey Murphy

I have not done it yet, but am looking to do so, so have been researching it quite a lot. You do use the same cover and gasket , its literally only the clutch and primary gear that gets changed. If you look at the maths of it, changing the primary gear and clutch should give you a 400rpm drop, and if you also fit a 120/90-18 rear wheel and tyre ( if you have a 16" rear that is), it will additionally give you a further 200rpm drop, making 600 rpm in all

Be careful how much you lower the RPM.  The HP at lower RPM will struggle a bit at the higher speed...

Thank you I think I will be OK dropping about 400 RPM off the top That's what I'm looking to do. It cruises great at 65 so I'm trying to go 70 with the RPMS the same as 65,and I think it will be nice to have the heavier clutch

I'm actually doing mine for the heavier clutch. Sure the rpm reduction would be nice but I like knowing that my clutch can pull all the way in quick and easy.

My GL500/Gl650 clutch and primary swap. Well I just finished it up and got back from the road test. I must say it was worth every bit of effort and money! It took 500 RPMs off the top and the heavier clutch is great. This is the setup it should have come with from the factory. At 70 MPH it used to turn 6800 RPM’s now at 70 it turns between 6250 and 6300 RPM’s I just caught myself cruising about 75 without realizing it. It cruises great at 70. That little bit makes a big difference. The clutch is a little harder to pull but it’s worth it. It grabs like a racing clutch when you get on it real hard.

This is my second GL500 I bought my first one new and rode it for 15 years carefree. The only thing I didn’t like about that bike was I felt it always needed an overdrive. I’d like to thank everyone that has helped me with this project I would have never thought of doing it without the great info I got here. The only special tool I needed was a clutch nut socket witch I made out of a piece of pipe and welded a socket on it and a 14 MM bolt from a Toyota I screwed into the fan to remove it. I was able to torque the primary gear and clutch hub bolt by putting the bike in fifth gear and holding the rear brake down..

I was able to buy the parts on EBay. I found a place that was selling all the parts together I got all of it for $21.00 plus shipping. I also replaced the upper radiator hose I went to NAPA they had 7/8 Super heavy duty heater hose Good to 80 PSI It worked great I got enough to do the bottom one later. One other thing that need to be mentioned is to get the radiator our if you have a Interstate model you need to remove the fairing and mounting bracket

If you haven't already then fit a CX 18" rear wheel as well. That will drop the revs even more and the replacement tyres are cheaper and more abundant
