fork Oil Weight
Reply Quote
Ive got my forks off  to do the steering bearings and might as well do an oil change. Has anybody done some experimenting and come to a conclusion as to the best weight and amount. I know there is always lots of debate on oil type and weights but lets see what seems to work best in the 500 turbo.

Thats a good question you raise. I have not changed the oil my my 650T forks since I got it. I would like to smooth it a bit. I did change the oil from ATF to 10wt .fork oil years ago in my CBX, and it stiffened it up a bit. Any recommendations from the other guys out there?

There were a few threads about this a while ago, and I think the consensus was to move up to 20 wt FORK oil.

Back when they were new, the ATF (automatic transmission fluid) was actually a reccomendation by Honda... now however, the science of viscosity and pressure has given us specific fork oil - and it really does make a difference.

Does anyone know where the thread with the procedure for doing this is?  My forks need an oil change and seal replacement but I can't find the thread with it in it.  I know that the anti-dive system needs to be set at a certain # but can't remember.  Thanks

I don't know about the anti dive setting thing but if I had to guess I would say set it at the lowest setting as I assume this would be the larger orifice and it would drain easier. I just inverted my forks and pumped then slowly once in awhile till no more oil came out. I ended up going with Mobile 1 ATF only because I missed the bike shop and wanted to get it back together. I also put 14 PSI of Nitrogen in the forks.I like a supple fork and do alot of work on my dirt bike suspension. I wish Honda published an oil level down from the top of the tube as this is a more accurate way of putting the correct amount in. Will put in some seat time and see how they work with this configuration.

Just my 2 cents worth. I've read a recommedation to change the fork springs to Progressive units and eliminate the tube spacer at the top of the stock spring. Has anybody else read this or have feedback. I am ready to rebuild my 500T forks and want to do it right the first time.

Hi Dan,
Going to a progressive spring was the worst mistake I made with a turbo.
Progressives worked very well with the soft sprung CX500D and GL650I forks, and I have been pleased with those upgrades,
However, the turbo's stock springs are vastly superior OEM than other models, so very few upgrades are really necessary.

When I installed Progressives on Rat, I kicked myself in the ass for tossing the OEM springs. The Progressive spring basically defeated the purpose of the Antidive system. Front end felt like it was diving for the first few inches after hitting the brakes hard.  Never again.

The only spring upgrade that I would consider would be Race Tech springs, and that's only because they send you a spring based on your bike's weight, your weight, and your riding style (which determines the spring rate).

I put 650T springs in the 500T to eliminate the spacers... I like it... Just personal opinion, but the travel feels smoother..
