Non broken header bolt removal.

The questions seems to come up quite a bit at how to remove a broken header bolt.
http://choppercharles.com/cs/forums/209171/ShowPost.aspx

I'm just curious is there a sure fire technique to remove a complete stud that hasn't broken? I have a few that I'm thinking need to be refreshed.

I'm waiting till the last possible minute with the best answers. Don't need to bust a nut or a stud trying to find the best method when others may know.

With four 31 year old studs. What could go wrong?

Have you ever TRIED that method?
There's nothing "iffy" about it.

I haven't tried it on the bike but other things yes. I tend not to screw around when the studs get smaller and smaller.

I'm sure I could probably double nut it and dead blow hit the stud first and possibly twist it right out but when there is time questions can be asked.

I also used the method of two nuts. Or, if the thread is very weak weld used (as we wrote at intervals of 2 minutes in the topic about the broken stud.

I use a rust release and heat. Then actually tighten ultra slightly 1st to break the grip using Vise/Mole grips. Then move the bolts out about half a millimetre and then back and keep doing this never trying to remove the bolt in one e.g working out backward and forwards very slowly each time taking it out half a millimetre each time.
The trick is keep heating, rust release and never try to remove in one action e.g keep screwing it back in a little.Doesn't matter if it takes half-an-hour to get out, better than a snapped stud.I've rarely snapped one since using this method.
Note:I've just been testing this mix,

Excellent stuff.

Although I have a large Butane torch I bought one of these last year,

Butane Mini torch

Dead cheap and superb for these jobs as it's not only very directional it also is refillable.

Here is a good article on the subject.  Covers all kinds of scenarios

For a stud that is not broken, here is the normal tool -

Picked one of these up earlier this week at their Dillon, SC warehouse store.  For $4.50, you can't beat it.
